Hi All,

My daughter is almost one. She has four teeth.. two on top and two on the bottom. She recently started teeth grinding. I am wondering if it is a problem. Has anyone experienced this.

Thank you,
S.

My son does this too. He is 10 months old and has 8 teeth. Once the next set of 8 started pushing through, he started to grind his teeth. Usually handing him a teether helps. Also baby Oragel does the trick.

Per our Pediatric Dentist, especially in a baby this age or a toddler... it is common, as they get teeth. Their mouth has some new things in it- teeth... and grinding is common. Both my kids did that too. It passes.

Or, take her to a Pediatric Dentist...and just ask and have her mouth looked at. Most likely, it is nothing.

And yes, as the previous poster said, sometimes it can be due to stress.

Most likely in your girl's case, it is just the normal grinding that a baby does, as they get in new teeth.
But it is always good to check with the Dentist.

All the best,
Susan

Bruxism is commonly due to a mineral deficiency (usually magnesium or zinc) and can also be parasites. I would try supplementing the minerals first and if that doesn't help, then try a parasite cleanse such as Paragone for kids.

My daughter did the same thing at the same age, with about 4 teeth as well. At first I was pretty worried (TMJ in a toddler?!), and would try to stop her every time she did it. However, my husband and I eventually ignored it and didn't make a big deal out of it. She stopped grinding altogether within a few weeks, and hasn't done it since (she is now 15 months old with 7 teeth).

Hi S.,

My daughter did the same thing right around the same age. I checked with her dentist, and he said that it is all normal for that age. Still, if it is worrying you, make an appointment with her ped dentist for peace of mind.

Good luck,
L.

S.,

My daughter did that as well and I did ask her dentist about it during her check up and he stated that it was quite normal for children to grind their teeth. He said that because they are still getting used to having teeth that some tend to grind them but that it would not cause any damage to her teeth or her jaw.

And if it's any consulation they do stop doing it as often as they get older, my little girl just turned 4 and she does not grind her teeth anymore.

Hope that helps

My son did the same thing as his teeth were coming in. It sounded awful! But didn't seem to bother him and passed once he was done teething (now he's two). I wouldn't worry about it.

My daughter did that for about a month. it really freaked me and my husband out more than anything else - her's sounded like some wierd mechanical clicking...she might as well have been running her fingers across a chalk board =) I would sometimes give her a pacifier or a chew toy, but she stopped on her own about a month or so later.

i wouldn't worry about it too much either. when you are next to her and she does it, you may want to pinch her cheeks in so she opens her mouth and stops but also give her something else to chew on so she can satisfy the need for pressure. hopefully this will help her to not get into a habit or do any damage.

My son was a teeth grinder and much like Susan's response, this is normal. Now at age 3-years he has stopped and everything is fine. Our Pedi Dentist said if he kept going past age 3/4 we'd look into remedies, but that because of teething it happens and is okay.

my daughter did too and she stopped on her own. it seemed like with every new tooth there would be a little grinding then she would stop after the newness wore off. i think it's just because it's something new in their mouth and a new feeling overall. she's probably also working on using them to chew??? i wouldn't worry or make a big deal yet, it may make her do it more if she gets a reaction out of doing it. i'm sure she'll stop on her own. good luck!

Both my kids went through it while teething and the dentist said that it isn't a problem.
Don't let the extremes scare you. Rarely is it caused by stress in a baby and even more rarely is it a result of some medical problem.

My son was grinding his teeth and the dentist said not to worry about it. He only does it occassionally. I'd be more concerned if it was her permanent teeth. See what your dentist thinks.
