Teething 5 1/2 Month Old

My daughter is in the process of cutting her first tooth. She is chewing on EVERYTHING she can get her hands on. The problem is she is now refusing to take her bottle. She will chew on the nipple for comfort but that is about it. I am worried that she is not getting enough to drink. She is eating cereal in the morning and afternoon with fruit and veggies for dinner. She is fine eating that, but wants NOTHING to do with her bottle. I have tried putting the formula in sippie cups and she still just plays with it. Any help would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks EVERYONE for all the help. I went to the store and bought some of those teething tablets. Right after they dissolved in her mouth she was drinking from her bottle. I was amazed! She didn't drink as much as normal, but at least she was drinking. I talked to her pediatrician too and he said as long as she has wet diapers, she is doing good.

Try using a straw. Not for her to suck on, she is too young for that. But put the straw in the milk, put your finger over the top of the straw - this will keep the milk in the straw, then put the straw in her mouth and slowly let the milk out. I've had to do that with my son when I forgot his sippy cup! Good luck with that tooth!

The problem is her gums are irritating her. If you can help soothe that, then she may be more interested in taking food.

Hylands Teething tablets are absolutely wonderful. They really do work. If they do not seem to be taking care of it, add baby tylenol or baby motrin...call your pediatrician's office to get the correct dosage. It can 25 to 60 minutes for the liquid medicine to really take effect...so give it to her an hour before you plan to feed her to get optimum results.

She may still want to gnaw on stuff, but taking the edge off of the pain and irritation of her teeth coming in may make the difference between drinking her milk or playing with it.

This is pretty normal. I would just make sure that you are adding a bit more formula than normal to her cereal in the morning and adding a little to her veggies too. It will make them a bit more watery, but she will probably still eat them. I think once her tooth breaks through she will go back to drinking her formula so try not to worry, I'm sure she's getting enough.

Her gums are sore. Give her some infant motrin or tylenol along with some hylands teething tablets. Try a frozen wash clothe and let her chew on it. It may help numb her gums. Once her teeth come in she should do better with the drinking. If you are really concerned then call the doctors office tommorow. She should be fine once her tooth comes in.

You will know if she is dehydrated by the number of wet diapers she has. At her age she should have 5-8 wet diapers.

Have you tried teething pellets, or they now have teething strips. Walgreen's sells both forms, by the other baby products.

Have you talked to your Pediatrition? I would go and get the teething relief products first, and then call you daughters do c in the morning...

Have you tried any tylenol? Or frozen fruits? My youngest daughter is 15 months old. And when I KNOW that she is tething, I will give her yogurt and frozen blueberries. Make sure to cut up the blueberries so that no choking can occur. But my baby LOVES them. You could also try:

Annabel Karmel BPA Free Fill and Freeze Puree Pop..basically you make REAL fruit popsicles, and trust me when I say they are a life saver for both Mom and Baby!..

Also there are some mesh like bags that you put the frozen frozen fruit in and let them suck on that..which due to your babies age, that may be the best way to do it. This way baby only gets juice, and there is no risk of choking. I cannot think of the brand name of it, but you can find them at a babies r us. My daughter was totally addicted to it, especially through her early teething. Good luck!

Good Luck

Have you tried helping her drink from the sippy cup several times. She may not know how to use it. I"d think that she'd like to chew on the spout.
