I really want to go see the Lion King this Fall. My little guy will turn 2 in July. He LOVES music, but he's also very active. Is it asking too much for him to sit still and watch the show for 3 hours? I hate to pay to see it, and then miss it because I have to sit out in the hall with him. My hubby and I just might have to go alone this round.
Any good shows coming to Dallas that WOULD be good for a 2 year old? What is your experience with these kinds of things?

Thanks for all the advice! I guess it'll probably be best to just wait until it comes around the next time. I definitely want to try the Disney on ice thing.. unfortunately the next thing coming through is the princess one... and though my little guy would probably love it... Daddy wouldn't approve, lol!
This is late, I know...I'd wait until age 5 at least, but every child is different. I took my 8 year old daughter to see a small local production of the Nutcracker and she wanted to go home after intermission. Glad I didn't spend a bunch of money going to the Dallas or Fort Worth productions!
I think, or at least from asking around, 2 would be too young to see Lion King. I was wanting to take my 3 year old and a couple "Lion King veterans" and Grandmas advised against it.
Thomas the train show is coming to Nokia. Arboretum has kids music concerts. Dan Zane is coming there this summer. The galleria has puppet shows....thats all I can think of right now.

I have season tickets to the Dallas Summer Musicals and tried several times when mine were younger (2 and 3) to take them to shows (age appropriate shows) Yes, they get restless and if you are lucky fall asleep. When I took them, I watched most of the show on the monitors in the lobby. The biggest problem that I found was that it was too loud for them. The loud music seemed to scare them even though nothing scary was actually occuring. It took until they were about 4 years old before I could enjoy the shows more with them. If your seats are not near the orchestra (ours are two rows back), the music might not be as loud and therefore, he may not have the same reaction. Please remember though that this is just my experience, and your little guy may be mesmerized (Lion King is quite a show!) Here's to another musical fan - take care.
My hubby and I saw Lion King in LA and I wouldn't dare take a 2 year old. I think an 8 year old would find it hard to sit through. I found it hard to sit through and Lion King is one of my favorite movies of all time (not to mention loving Elton John w/Tim Rice). I have a love of theatre and I've seen too many musicals to count, but this one left a lot to be desired. My opinion on the show aside, it's WAY too adult for him.
My recommendation, make it an adult evening and save the theatre for when he's older...or go see a children's musical. My Little Pony is going to be at Nokia in a few weeks and there is also Casa Manana in FW that is doing an Easter-themed musical...I think it's called the Great Egg Caper.
A. - The Lion King at the Dallas summer musicals is awesome. The music, the costumes are superb. But, your little one may be too young to sit still and enjoy it. Some of the costumes may scare him, and you want him to appreciate it. We went with my nephew who was 5, three years ago, and he enjoyed it (but he has always been muture for his age. If your son can sit through an entire animated movie (at the theaters) then he would probably be ok, but the musical is 2 1/2 to 3 hours long. I know I wouldn't waste my money on my son (who is 4) to go. He would be interested for about 30 minutes, but then we would be spending our time at the fountain downstairs missing the rest of it. Have a good time, and enjoy, whatever your decision.
I personally think that if you can afford it- stimulation at any age is great- as LONG as that suits the child- some kids cant handle it-my kids sat through movi- ice shows anything!

Evene the smallest thing stimulates them so - start small and go big so that way they appreciate it all. There are so many other things to stimulate them at this age- check out local theaters etc - puppet shows - sea world
I would agree that 2 is too young to sit through a musical, but I would highly recommend you and your husband going!!
I think a two year old will have a hard time staying still that long -- and quiet. My 3 and 4 year old love shows and movies and it's hard to get them through a 1 and 1/2 hour movie that's made just for kids. My opinion is that you and your son would be happier if you go without him this year. There is the Dallas Children's Theater and I think there's a children's theater in Plano as well. I haven't been to either one with my kids because I'm just now thinking they might be able to handle it. But the one main difference would be that the children's theater is for kids and the musical your talking about is not necessarily made for kids -- at least not kids that young. So if you're in a children's theater and your son needs to talk to move around, most likely no one will be bothered by it, including you. Just my thoughts.

Try taking him to Marionette shows (ex. Slappy's at the Galleria), etc. Or go see Charlotte's web at the dollar theater in Plano (off of Coit). See how long he'll be able to sit through something like that.
Personally, I think Lion King would be too long for a 2 yr. old.
I would definitely check with the theater before purchasing tickets to a show like that because sometimes the do not allow children under a certain age. I really wanted to take my 3 year old to see Wicked in Chicago because he likes the Wizard of Oz, but they don't allow children under 5 in The Oriental Theater at all. I agree with the other moms that suggested the children's theaters.

As mother of older kids ( 21, 19, & 16), I remember how much fun it was to expose them to all sorts of family entertainment. However, as a season ticket holder for Dallas Summer Musicals (which is the group sponoring the Lion King's performance) for many years, I've witness first-hand how difficult it was for both the parents and kiddos to enjoy a theatrical performance when the kiddos were not really ready to sit still (and quiet) for that long of time. While, the Lion King is a wonderful performance (I've seen it twice and have tickets to see it again this Fall), and I would encourage any one who's interested to go to the upcoming performances, it is probably going be too much for your little guy this time around.
Now, when my kiddos were that age, we truly enjoyed the Dallas Puppet Theater. I'm not sure if that venue still exists. I know there was a theater at NorthPark for Kathy Burke Puppets. You might try and determine if that is still around.

My 2 year old LOVED Disney on Ice--they usually come around at least once a year. I think Lion King is WONDERFUL, but get a babysitter! What a great date night!
I took my baby to see the movie Ray when she was around your child's age and it was TORTURE!! We ended up leaving early and the other couple we were with was asked to leave because their little one was too loud. The Lion King (play) is a little more action packed than a movie so it might hold his attention a little longer. They have characters that come into the aisles and the balcony for him to watch. If I were you, I'd get a sitter and enjoy it alone. I saw it when I was single with a friend and we loved it.
I wouldn't take a 2-yr-old to anything longer than about 30 min. Keep your eyes peeled for things like The Wiggles and Barney. I believe those shows are 45 min with an intermission right about the time kiddos are getting fidgety.
I would say 2 is way to young to expect him to sit still for the musical. You also need to consider the other people who have paid money to see The Lion King. Does he sit still for movies? I would say that nothing that comes to the Dallas Muscials would be appropriate. Probably something geared specifically for children - like Sesame Street or something like that.
