Thinning Hair After Childbirth

Hi there everyone. Just wondering if anyone has or is having a similar experience. I heard this happens and I am going through it--my hair has drastically thinned out since childbirth. I suppose this is from the decrease of hormones in my body after I gave birth. It happens to some women I guess. I was just wondering if someone had a similar experience and if so, when your hair started going back to normal again. I typically had very thick hair and never had this type of thing happen before. I really would appreciate hearing your experience with regard to this if this in fact happened to you too. Thanks a bunch.

I lost so much hair after both of my daughters were born. I actually had some bald patches around my face. I lost hair from about 3-6 months post-partum. I'm now in the regrowth phase and it's pretty hilarious. I have so much baby hair growing around my face. I typically wear my hair back and so I have a ton of sprouts that stick out (and 75% of them came back gray :().

I actually just read an article on this very thing the other day. According to the article in Parents, while you're pregnant, your hail folicles are in a resting state, which means they are not shedding. After you give birth and your hormones change, your hair goes into the next phase, which is to shed and regrow. These cycles normally take place all the time, so you don't notice it as much. The problem with hormones causing your beautiful thick pregnancy hair is that when you give birth, all your hair hits the next cycle at the same time, so it feels like it's all falling out. As your body adjusts, your hair will too and your normal cycles will go on. So, yes, your hair will go back to normal, like before you were pregnant.

HI L., My experience was simular. I had thin hair to start, it thin out a bit more but grew in so much better than before. I had a "c" section and was told sometimes after surgery your hair thins. It happened to my sister after her tummy staple. She had long straight hair, the rest of us all curly. Hers thinned & then came back curly! My hair is now strong, healthy & better than it ever was!

Hi L.,

Congrats on your new baby! Hair thinning is pretty normal. My hair literally fell out in clumps! I think it was bad for a few months and then gradually started to come back in again. I can't remember exact dates - but I know that I lost hair for several months - but it did come back.

Congrats again on your new baby!

I have always had super thick hair as well. It's often been commented to me by hair dressers and others. I did experience hair loss after each of my children. It was the most intense after my third I think. It was really unbelieveable how much hair I'd pull from the drain. It seemed endless the amount that would shed when I washed my hair. My husband really started to worry that I was sick. I'd say it was probably around 7 months that it really slowed up. I'm at 10 months now and things are pretty normal. I don't have any bald spots or particularly thin hair now either.

I had the same experience. When I would blow dry my hair there seemed to be TONS of hair on the sink, floor, etc. I would find so much hair in the shower drain I thought there must be something REALLY wrong but It turns out it's normal. I lost a lot of hair as well and for me, it took about a year to get to the stage when it seemed like it was completely back to normal. If your hair is long, it can actually appear to be more--but it's just longer hairs so it looks like more. Hang in there--your hair will go back to normal, it might just take awhile!

Hi L.!

I posted the same question back on Feb 7! The same thing is happening to me. The hair loss is slowing down - I have been using hair products to make may hair look fuller. I also had my hair dresser give me a better style!

I had many wonderful, wonderful responses to my post if you want to take a look: http://www.mamasource.com/request/3098175229394945

Thank you to everyone who responded!
