Ticks/Lyme's Disease

The biggest stress reliever for me is to take my two dogs in the woods for a hike. I absolutely love spending time out in the woods. The problem is, I have had Lyme's disease twice since September. Yesterday alone after clearing out the woods behind our house and going on a hike with my family I had 5 ticks on me. Does anyone have advice for how to keep them off? Even with long sleeves and long pants and a hat, they still end up on me and my kids. I hate to stop hiking in the woods just because of ticks,it brings so much joy to my family and me.

Thank you!

P.S. With Frontline my dogs still ended up with tons of ticks, but with a flea/tick collar, they haven't had any! Just thought some of you might benefit from knowing that sometimes the old fashioned things work better than the new stuff!

Hi P.,
I live on a farm with my 3 children and we've been using a product called Bug & Sun made by Coppertone. You kind find it at places like Walmart right along side the other Sunscreens. This particular one has the sunscreen and the bug spray all in one. It smells like a cross between sunscreen and bug repellant. Not the greatest smelling stuff in the world, but it keeps the sun off and the bugs. You can google it on the internet to find out more about it. It's a little pricer than some of the other stuff, but well worth it. We have a major issue with ticks and fleas and mosquitos, but this stuff seems to ward all of that off.

I don't know much of anything about ticks, sorry, but I do know that in 28 years of living outdoors most of the summer, and having 2 dogs, I've only seen one tick. I've also noticed some trails that are posted as "high tick area" -- perhaps you could find a different place to hike?

Option #2: wierd option, I admit -- If you wear a shirt with a color of some kind, put a dog's flea/tick color on the OUTSIDE of your clothing. If it works, what d'heck? Who's gonna notice in the woods? -- I would be careful not to wear it against your skin, because I don't know what's in it.

Option #3: Take Vitamin B supplements -- lots of them. It supposedly keeps mosquitos away -- maybe it would work with ticks?

Option #4: Does Deep Woods Off help? How about Old Woodsmans? The latter REALLY STINKS, but it works pretty well. Haven't seen it since we left Maine, but it worked there .. .

We live in a high tick area as well, so I sympathize. My husband cleared out some of the brush at the back of our property and that helped with the yard, but if you're going out into the woods, you need some insect repellant spray. Cutter is good, but if you prefer something without DEET, I like the California Baby brand. All natural citronella and other essential oils. Best of luck!

try avon skin so soft. I know it is good to repel mosquitos and other bugs. It should be safe to put on animals. I have heard of some people putting the skin so soft on their horses. sorry to hear you have lymes disease. I like natural remedies and the simple things to help out with everyday issues.

First, try putting dryer sheets in your pocket. They help keep bugs away. Next, you can try some plants. Lavender keeps ticks away. You could rub some on you. I have heard garlic keeps them away, too( you have to eat it or take the capsules). Sours the milk as they say. Good luck!

Deep woods off seems to work pretty good. Just remember not to put it on your hands, and to shower when you come in.

Garlic. There is stuff out there that you can get that you can take along with the dogs. And even using garlic salt in your foods, they don;t like the smell or something. Growing up we had the same thing, but back then lime diese and things where not even a thought in the mind.

Hi,
I've never tried them, but I just saw in the LL Bean catalog that they have clothes with bug repellent in them, that lasts for 70 washes. It is called "Insect Shield." The catalog said that it is some kind of natural bug repellent. You can go to their web site and search on "Insect Shield" and you'll see all the options. It might be worth a try.

Avon's Skin So Soft. Dilute it your dogs bathwater and it will keep fleas & ticks off of them, and isn't poisionous! For you, after your shower when u are still wet, slather it on you. Put a tiny bit on fingertips and massage on your scalp if you are worried about ticks there. Good luck.
