Toddler Activity Ideas??

Our Buffalo winter is coming... and although i love the snow, it also keeps us inside waaay more than this beautiful summer has.

I have 20 month old twins... with the exception of daycare Monday & Tuesdays, I get to be home with them all the time! I love getting to spend so much time with them, but i feel like i'm running out of ideas... i'm just looking to spice things up a bit!

We have outside time daily - playing in the yard, or a walk to the park, or a bike ride with the bike trailor... once a week we have a playdate to walk and play at the playground at a city park. But soon we won't be able to stay outdoors for quite as long, it'll just be too darn cold! We do have a family pass to the science museum which has a whole exploration room for toddlers, so i'm sure we'll take advantage of that. I do know of some music, zoo, etc. classes in the area... but finances are a bit tight and i dunno if its worth spending money on that type of thing at this point? What do you all think about toddler classes? (They do get playtime with other kids at daycare & at church on sundays & when we get together with friends).

Right now on rainy or scorching hot days, we stay in... we read books... we color with crayons... we sing and dance a lot...they love gymnastics (we do summersaults, i set up a "balance beam" out of rolled blankets, etc)... play ring around the rosey over & over... along with running around outside, i give them at least a hour of just unplanned playtime inside without me interfering to do whatever they want... they do sometimes watch either Seseme Street or SuperWhy? (no more than an hour a day and they don't usually sit and watch the whole show, they play with toys and pay attention for only their favorite parts).

Anyone have advice for different activites that you did with your toddlers at this age? They do a lot of crafts at daycare and i would love to get more into crafting with them... i'm just not creative enough to come up with ideas..
Any fun songs / games your kids love? Mine love ring around the rosie, but i'm getting bored of it!
I'd like to get more learning into our play too... we do the alphabet often (its my daughter's favorite song!) and they have toys with letters, numbers, colors, etc... but any specific way you worked learning into playtime?

Thanks so much for any advice :)

What can I do next?

-Watercolor painting
-Playdough (make your own with kids as helpers - just google "playdough recipe")
-Game: Hullabaloo (by Cranium) -- AWESOME for little ones; my son "plays" this all the time even though he doesn't fully get it yet. It has music and directions for finding colors/pictures on floor pads -- encourages movement and learning too
- Wooden puzzles (some have alphabet, numbers, etc.)
- Get some big paper and trace them. They can color in, put stickers on, etc.
- Take them to the local library (check for free events - story times, etc.)
- Look for local indoor pools to go to (our local high school offers really cheap "memberships" - hours are limited but it's a great deal and swimming gets energy out. Local hotels sometimes let you come in and swim too for a small fee)
- Building things with blocks never gets old. Make things they are interested in at the moment - whatever they saw on SuperWhy, make it with blocks, draw it, etc. Continuity and repetition can really solidify new concepts.

Also, don't limit yourself to traditional "play" activities. You can also:
-Involve them in cooking/preparing snacks/meals - good for counting and colors (have them throw a certain # of carrots in soup pot, etc.)
-Involve them in cleaning (mine LOVES to use the Dustbuster and help with laundry! You can have them sort colors, push clothes into dryer, push buttons)

Most of all have fun and enjoy your time with your little ones!

I think that Michelle M. covered it all!!!!! this is a great question!!!! i have a 2 1/2 year old and 9 month old twins. it has been so hot most days here that i havent been able to get the kiddo's out a whole lot, one of my twins cannot tolerate the heat, anything above about 74 and he is bright red all over (even if he isnt in the sun) and tiiiiiicked off...luckily we have one of those indoor/outdoor slides, not big, but we have it in the family room downstairs so that helps. maybe you could hit up some late garage/yard sales and find some good stuff to do. I really love all the ideas Michelle M gave, you rock girl!

Your twins need to have more time to play together with unplanned activities, this will bring out the creativity in them and teach them to be independent. What I used to do is let them play by themselves for unset periods throughout the day and when they seem to start getting into things or antsy etc I would come up with ideas. Some things my kids liked was we would make instant pudding and finger paint then eat some of it. Get a vinyl tablecloth or plastic that you have cut and put on your table and let the kids use that this way you can grab it and wash it off and reuse it. I would even have the kids shake the pudding themselves. Another idea I did was I made bean bags and used small pails as targets or baskets or they could play tag with them or even better we would play "Hot Potato" with them and sing songs and when the song is done whoever had it was "out". Other things we did was went on a camping adventure in the living room and made our own tent and had a picnic and played with a beachball. Even though you don't have the summer to be outdoors doesn't mean you can't pretend you are. I found that after a while my kids started doing these things on their own while I cleaned. When they got older we had a fireplace put in and the kids had a camp out on many nights, we roasted marshmallows, and they got to sleep in the living room in front of the fireplace, not too close of course and I had a sore back the next day but that was okay the kids had a blast and that was all that counted.

I love(d) The Wiggles. My 6 1/2 year old loved them when she was younger. They taught her colors, numbers, sharing...etc... I now have a 3 month old and cannot wait to introduce her to the Wiggles.
Movement is great, pretend play, dancing, just being silly with them. Also paint- toddlers LOVE to get messy and paint - just let them... Get the washable kind. My daughter still uses her Daddy's old t-shirts as paint shirts

For my daughter and my other preschool kids that I teach, I use thelearningboxpreschool.com
They send you everything you need to teach them and it comes with all of the supplies. For a month's worth for a 3 day program for 2 kids it would only be $20 a month. :) I love it! Well worth the $$.

Have a tea party. Pretend to have drinks/food or do the real deal and
put a mat down. Great fun.
Play Store - Love it. Did this growing up. Use fake fruit, buy cheap cash
toy register, play money.
Bean Bag Toss
Play dress up: fairy, princess, wigs, wings, purses, kid jewelry
Make a fort w/blankets
Finger paint? Yikes, huh?
Get some play phones so they can "talk" to each other
Blow up some balloons they can kick around the living room
