My son normally has nice breath but when he gets up in the morning or after his nap he has gross breath. We brush his teeth 2 times a day but no flossing yet. He eats a healthy diet with lots of fruit. He has gorgeous teeth so I don't think he has any dental problems. I read that lots of little ones have morning breath because they breath through theirs mouths still. I have noticed this for a few months now. I don't know if he always had it, he just talks more now so I smell it!! He still nurses before bed and I know that a little bit of milk still comes out...not much though. Do you guys find that your little kids (my son is 28 months) have bad breath upon waking?
It was a startling revelation for me too. But at a certain age, they no longer have sweet baby breath... they actually get gross breath like we do. Kinda like when they get around 4 yrs old and they start to stink when they are sweaty. It's just that he is growing up, mom.
No worries--my son does too! He just turned 3. He's had stinky breath every morning for about a year now. Not sure why either--breathing through mouth or what have you. I just figure if we have it, then why can't he? ;)
my son is 14 and still has horrible breath after waking up... the worse.. it's just him.. oh well... good luck
Same with my son. He turned 2 in June. I brush his teeth in the morning and before bed and he still has bad breath, he sleeps with a pacifier still so I don't think sleeping with his mouth open is the reason, in his case. He has a check up coming up and I plan on asking his pediatrician about it just to see if theres anything else I should be doing.
the same thing happened to my 2 yr old. my pediatrician said it had to do with her sinuses if she was a little clogged or some mucus in there. not necessarily sink maybe allergies. but assured me it was totally normal

I think flossing may be an issue, he has teeth, he should floss. When he brushes his teeth does he brush his tongue also. I think the same thing that applies to an adult that wakes up with bad breath should also be applied to your child. I know you've asked the question however I'm asking as well how does a person avoid bad breath in the morning?
Afer he brushes his teeth have him rinse his toothbrush and brush his tongue or you can get him a tongue scraper. ASsk doc if a probiotic would help.
Anytime the mouth gets dry, it causes bad breath. If he's a mouth-breather, his breath will be real bad. If you notice, people who drink alot of alcohol have bad breath and alot of that is due to their mouths actually being dried out by the alcohol.
Mouth-breathing could be the answer but if you are giving him milk before putting him down for a nap, then he will probably have bad breath upon waking. See what happens if you give him water in his sippy-cup before nap time.
