Toddler with Thyroglossal Duct Cyst

Sorry no advice for child- but my husband had this surgery and was minimal recovery. He never new he had this- so congrats on finding out soo soon. He had prob. as an adult with any cold or virus it would almost swell his throat shut- he had to have a tracheotomy once.

My daughter had to have a stint put in her tear duct before she was 2 years old. It was very h*** o* the parents because she was going to be put under, and of course she never had been before then. I worried myself crazy. But she did absolutely fine and it was quick. The surgery was maybe 15-20 minutes long. You're a loving parent and of course this is going to be h*** o* you, but it's going to be fine. Post-op for her procedure was fine. She didn't even seem to notice it. It was much better than the probing that she went through twice in the office without any pain medicine. Good luck J..

Sorry this is late. I can't relate to your specific surgery, but when my son was 2 he had his adenoids removed. We did it at Texas Children's in Houston, and I would assume Children's in Dallas has a similar process. They had a room full of ride on toys and the kids could pick one to ride down the hallway, we walked down the hallway with him to the surgery doors, and they assured me he would be completely "out" within two minutes of leaving us. They paged us when he was in recovery. This was the worst part for us since they are a little disoriented and sometimes don't come out of the anesthesia really well. We held him while he cried until he finally fell back asleep. We were there at 6:30 in the morning, and in our car on the way home by 1:00. He slept most of the day. I think that it was harder on me as a mommy than him. At that age he had no awareness of what was going to happen, and I don't think he even remembers it. I would think that while it is hard for us as parents at that age, it is actually easier on them than it would be later on when they have no awareness. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

My daugther had to be put to sleep when she was one and half (she is now 2 and a half)so she could have surgery to correct amblyopia in both of her eyes. It was really hard to let them take her away, but it had to be done. We tried other options first, but nothing worked. She was really mad when she woke up, but calmed down within the hour. We took her home then and she pretty much slept the whole day and didn't play, eat or barely drink. I laid with her the whole time becuase I felt so bad for her. I did call the anethesiologist at one point and she said that was normal behavior for the first day. The next day she was much better and by day three back to her active self! I hope everything goes well for him and you too.

We had tonsils out with our boy and he was put to sleep. The first part when they put them out and wheel them away was fine.

The waking up part is a bit crazy. My little boy was pretty crazy. He was trying to pull his IV out and kicking and screaming for about 10 min until he got fully oriented.

When they wheeled him up to the room, he was pretty ticked off that they wanted him to get into the bed as bedtime is a bit of a battle. That sounded like punishment to him. What we ended up doing was getting a red wagon wheeled to the room and put it next to the bed and he just sat in there with the IV poles next to him.

The only other thing I'd mention is that his potty training regressed and returned after the pain meds were done.

My son has a birth mark on his face that we are currently having removed. He's 10 months old and has had 2 laser treatments done down at Childrens Hospital in Dallas. Seeing you child go off to surgery is sooo hard. I've cried each time. It's like someone is ripping out your heart. But at the same time you know that it's the right thing to do. Recovery is never easy as the child is madder then heck. But after an hour or so my son is always fine.

So do what's best for your child but know that it's going to be h*** o* you...probably harder on you then the child.

Well i didnt go thru the same ordeal but i was 2 when i had to be put to sleep to have my tonsils out. I did fine my mom said with no problems. Also,my son when he was only 4 he had to be put to sleep to have all four of his front teeth pulled cuz of bottle rot and he did great! No side effects or anything i know your child will be just fine! But it is scary, and it doesnt matter if your first time mom or not its still scary period, but that is normal. I had this surgery when i was about 3 years old, and as i don't really remember it (34 yrs ago) I just wanted to say that he will probably do fine. My mom said mine got infected afterwards, which cause the scarring to be worse (still visible) so please watch closely for any signs afterwards. Unfortunately I had to have the surgery repeated when I was in my early 20s as I was having problems from it again. I don't know if thats common or not. Not trying to scare you just wanted to share what info I knew. I'll be praying everything goes smoothly.

J.- I have no idea what a thyroglossal duct cyst is or what the surgery intails, but i had to put my 2 year old through surgery about 6 months ago for his tonsils. it was very scary for me to think about him being put to sleep and taken back for an operation. the main thing is for you to stay calm in front of him. i explained, in toddler level, he was going to go to sleep with the doctor and i would be there when he woke up, that we would have a sleep over in the hospital and he would have a sore throat (he had his tonsils removed). i took a friend with me because my husband was out of town. i let him pick out new pajamas and a new movie to take. at the hospital the dr gave him a "sleepy" medicine-a liquid. he was so drowsy with in minutes. the anastesiologist caried him back. he was asleep even before the iv. the medicine also had an amnesiac (sp?)effect so he would have no memories of the experience. he did great. they come to get you from the waiting room before he is even awake in recovery so that you are there when he wakes up. i think at a young age the heal much faster than older kiddos. i hope this helps you some. i felt so comfortable with my anestialogist that i did not even cry when he was taken away. we were at plano presby...don't know if that makes a difference but everyone was so kind. lots of extra love and a new toy or two helped the recovery, and lots of ice cream in our situation.
