My husband and I have decided we wanted to have a third child, we have a 5 and 3 yr. old. I stopped taking birth control in April, and there is still no + sign on the pregnancy tests. I was wondering if any of you have gone through this and long it took to finally get pregnant.

What can I do next?

My first two children were 13 months apart, and we were using birth control. When my second was 2, we stopped using birth control, but my third child wasn't conceived for another 5 years. You just never know.

hi there,
my oldest sister went through something like this,it took her maybe 5 months i think before she got pregnant, maybe 6.it can depend on how long you were on the birth control before trying.taking prenatal vitamins now can help,as can eating healthy.the earlier you start, the easier it will be for you body to feel ready to fertilize an egg.keep trying.
good luck:)

We are expecting our 3rd in July. It actually took about 6 months the 3rd time. It was much quicker the other 2 times.

When I got off of birth control, it took us 6 months to get pregnant. I am now 20 weeks along! For others, though, it can take longer...I heard up to one or two years. So hang in there, it will happen just at the right time! :)

When we were trying for our second after 6 months I got an ovulation kit at the drugstore - turns out my cycles is a bit different than I thought and I ovulated later than I was expecting. Worked first time with the kit, I would recommend trying it! (only costs $15 or so)

M P,

We too are going for #3, we have a 3yo and 5 yo. I haven't been on birth control for 14 years so that isn't an issue for me. But I just wanted to let you know that so far we haven't conceived either (we've only been trying for one month). I had hoped that we'd get it on the first shot as we did with our first two, but I understand that there really isn't a definite answer as to how long it will take. I have a friend that is on year #2 trying to conceive #3. For me, I'll give it a year at the most, then I'll just be thankful for what I have. In the meantime, relax and be patient.

It took us about 18 month to get pregnant our first time. I have lots of friend who have tried even longer and finally got lucky, and a few who needed medical help in their journey to conception.

I've been a member of a website called Fertility Friend for over 3 years now. It's an online community dedicated to mommies, mommies-to-be and hopefully-soon-mommies. www.fertilityfriend.com
I've met lots of great women on there, received tons of support in trying to conceive, pregnancy and parenting. There is a membership fee but it's worth it, especially if you end up using their TTC software. There's also a cheaper pregnancy membership if you don't want the advanced software for TTC.

best of luck to you!

I am in the same boat right now. I am on month four of trying to conceive my third child. I have two boys ages five and three. I am so excited for number three. I know it will be the last one. My other two boys were conceived the first and second month so I am trying to be patient and not stress.

My body has been going through something so I have been trying to figure it out. I have gained weight, more tired, irritable, etc. This morning I go to have my thyroid tested. I have a family history of thyroid problems. I checked it out on the internet and found that thyroid problems can make it difficult to get problems. The article said everyone trying to conceive should get their thyroid tested.

You haven't bee trying long so I wouldn't stress too much! Good luck and keep us posted!

Two months is really a short time. I understand you are excited, but just enjoy the time with your husband, and TRY not to obsess. You may be trying on days that you aren't ovulating, or it just hasn't happend. Don't they say to try for a year before you start to worry. One of my good friends has been trying to get pregnant for almost 2 years and I always said try to relax and not think about it, and it will happen. She is now 4 months pregnant, and was shocked to find out she was pregnant, she'd given up! It will happen, just try to enjoy yourself and family until it does!!!

I wouldn't worry yet. It can take a while to get pregnant again. Especially if you were on the pill it can take a years or so.
If you are regular, you could try an ovulation kit to track your fertile days. Sometimes the ovulation days differ a little after having children.
Depending on your age (I was a little older and didn't want to wait too long to get pregnant again) you could talk to your Obgyn and try fertility drugs. It worked for us.

Good luck.

Normal from a medical perspective is pregnant within one year of trying. It is much too early to be concerned at all. Also, if you are 35 or over, check with your doctor after 6mo instead of 12mo. Most helpful is to relax and not stress. I agree with the person who mentioned instant gratification - relax, it will happen when it is meant to happen.

Please try looking into NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING. It's a great, fantastic, healthy way to GET pregnant and also NOT GET pregnant. "The Pill," has way too many side effects and is NOT as EFFECTIVE AS NFP. It brings your husband and you closer on so many different levels, you'll have a much stronger sex drive, as "the pill," actually decreases your sex drive.

GOOD LUCK, AND MANY MANY MORE BLESSINGS TO YOU!

Hi MP...
Same thing happened with me and my hubby....
We kind of expected it to happen right away...We got really worried when it didnt and went to the DR, had all these tests done...only to find out everything was fine and because we were a bit older it just takes a bit more time...
It took us about 10 months to get the timing down and now we have a beautiful 10 month old baby girl to add to our brood.
Dont worry....just relax and it will happen.
If you still feel unsure you can always see your DR for some extra assurance.

How exciting that you've decided to have another child! I have 3 children, and each time we decided to start trying, I have worried that we would have problems getting pregnant. Since you didn't mention it, I'm going to assume that you haven't had great difficulty getting pregnant before. Although it may feel like an eternity, 2 months isn't a long time to try before getting pregnant, especially if you are a busy family with 2 children.

All that being said, after we decided to have our second child, I stopped taking our birth control, and was disappointed when we weren't pregnant the first month. I had such fears of secondary infertility, I started charting my cycle. (I used Toni Wexler's book "Taking Charge of your Fertility", which is fantastic!) We didn't get pregnant the next month, but the 3rd month, we did! For my next child, we decided not to use birth control at all, and we got pregnant just under 9 months later.

I have never been one of those amazing women who can just relax, forget, and let it happen. I understand the delicious torment that can rule one's mind when trying to conceive. For me, I felt most relaxed when I used that intense energy to chart my cycle and do the most I could to ensure that we could conceive. I had all that energy anyway, and I felt good about doing something constructive with it. If that doesn't appeal to you, I suggest that you enjoy yourselves and I hope you have good news very soon!

Gee! Give yourself some time! In our instant gratification society, it is nice that there are still a few aspects of life we can't hurry along. You haven't "gone through" anything yet. You are trying to get pregnant. Don't be concerned until at least 6-8 months.

Don't stress. A normal healthy couple can take up to a year to get pregnant. I am sure everything is fine. If you want it to happen faster get one of those ovulation kits they sell in most drug stores. It will up your odds of picking the right day.

It's very common for it to take up to 6 months to fully return to your "normal" hormonal cycle after going off birth control. I wouldn't worry about it. Also, you could try charting your fertility to get a better idea of when to try. I used the fertility awareness method, which is more involved than just temperatures, but it only took my one cycle after I started using it.

Get an ovulation test, it tests for leutenizing hormone (LH. Dont buy them at the store, you can find them on the web for pennies. I used a site called babywishes, not sure of the exact link, google it. As I am sure you know, it can take up to a year to get pregnant, even when everything is in working order. Testing for LH just increases those odds. Good luck!

Just a little bit more info...
My OB told me (when I was planning our 1st) that I should wait 6 months before TTC, that I could do it in 3, but it was better to wait 6. I got pg after 5 the 1st time we tried (I was 34).
Later I had heard that when you are on the pill the lining that your uterus makes each month in prepairation to get pg gets thin and it takes a few months to build this lining up to the point of being a healthy environment for an embyro to grow.

You didn’t mention your age-am important factor.

At 30, for instance, you might expect it to take longer to get pregnant.

Give your body another month or two to get back into sync after the pill, and if nothing yet see your doctor for a check up. High blood sugar or blood pressure, being overweight can all be an issue getting pregnant.

Hi, MP:

My husband and I had trouble having our first (suffered through three miscarriages and an ectopic) and had to turn to IVF with thankfully great success! First, age is a factor. If you're still under 35, the experts seem to think that it can take up to a year of trying before one should suspect there's a problem. If you're over 35, they say you should seek help after 6 mos.

Also, it depends on what kind of birth control you were on. If you were on the pill, it will take a few months for your body to allow yourself to get pregnant. It took me 6 mos to get pregnant the first time after I got off the pill.

If you want to take more immediate action, buying a basal thermometer was helpful for me as was the ovulation kit you can buy over the counter. At least it narrows the target area of when you should be trying. I was able to get pregnant using both these methods with only 2 or 3 tries each. (I had trouble staying pregnant, but had no trouble getting that way!)

Wish you the best of luck and hope this helps!

Best, SM

At just 2 months I wouldn't worry yet. It took me three months to get pregnant with my second son and I didn't have to go off of birth control. Give your system a few more months to clean out the birth control. I've heard it takes most couples an average of 6 months to get pregnant. Remember that's an average so it takes some people less time and some people more. Good luck! And Congrats to you on your future third child. :)

You are supposed to be off birth control pills for at least 3 months before you try getting pregnant. Your pills have a half life... Your doc should have told you that. You may not be ovulating yet. Your body can take up to 3 months to get its normal cycle back. At this point, in terms of fertility, you have NOTHING to worry about, I'm sure, as 2 months is not a long time at all. But, the other reason they suggest you be off the pill for 3 months before you even start trying is that you don't want the fetus to be affected in any way by the artificial hormones. Most likely, they won't hurt it, but they suggest you do so just in case.

Hope this is useful..

Congrats on deciding to expand your family. We have 2 kids. 9yrs and 4yrs. We decided that we would like to try and have another. I stopped taking the pill in Dec 06 and I finally did get pregnant Feb 08. It took a really long time. From what I understand, it can take awhile. For me I finally gave up and said that it just wasn't meant for us. When I gave up that's when it happened. So just hang in there it will happen when its time for you. Just enjoy the "trying" part. :-)
