Hello! I'm 25 weeks into my second pregnancy and carrying very low this time. I keep having back spasms and pain/throwing my back out which puts me into tears for 3-4 hours. My Dr. told me to take a warm shower and have tylenol. He also suggested a belly band for support. So my question is, which one is best? Any I should steer clear from?

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

If you can't try one one, order one from the catalogue. If it doesn't suit you, send it back.

Good luck. D.

When I was pregnant with my twins I wore a support belt that I bought at Motherhood. It helped, but I couldn't stand to wear it all the time. It basically helps hold up the weight of your belly.

A belly band is designed to help hold your pants up, I've seen several brands, but I swear by Bella Band. You can use them to hold together your regular pants as you grow into maternity, use them to hold up maternity ones as they slip down and then use it to cover your mid section when you nurse post-birth or as you ease back into your regular clothes. I don't think belly bands are designed to help ease the pressure of a heavy belly.

Good luck.

I actually used a maternity support girdle during my last pregnancy. They worked well for me. I felt like it gave me great support. Here is the website where I ordered if you want to check them out.

I would suggest using ice on your back, on for 20 minutes, off for one hour. I would also recommend going to a Chiropractor. I went through both pregnancies and was able to treat patients (I am also a Chiropractor, so I stand all day) until the day before I delivered both times. You may need to be treated through the remainder of your pregnancy since the stress on you back is going to increase as the baby gets bigger. The belly band will help, especially when on your feet for a while. Also, be sure your low back is always supported when you're sitting, a pillow or rolled up towel work fine. If you're having back pain when you're sleeping, try putting a pillow between your knees if you sleep on your side, pillow under your knees if you sleep on your back. Don't wear the belly band while sitting or to bed. The band will help support your back, but your muscles don't have to work when you're wearing it. Your muscles will become weak - which means it will be easier to hurt your back. Taking care of a newborn is hard work, not a good time for a sprained back. Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy.

Hi, let me tell you from experience about both the girdle (first woman gave you a link) and a maternity belt. The girdle felt tight (which it's supposed to do) and I put it on over my underwear so I was very snug in there. I didn't like that I couldn't take it on and off if I was feeling a bit tight. I also had a maternity belt that I got a Mimi Maternity. Here is the link so you can see it. You can get it in the store and also at Motherhood maternity. http://www.motherhood.com/Product.asp?

When I saw this thing, I thought that no way is this going to be comfortable, but I was wrong! I wore it all the time because when I took it off, it felt like my belly would hit the floor. The support was great! But what I did was wear it outside my clothes instead of under them. That made a world of difference with comfort. My shirts were long enough that it covered the belt and you couldn't see it. And what's nice about the belt is it's easy to put on and take off if I was sitting and didn't need it on. Try the belt first (it's cheaper) and see how it works for you... but I would go to the store and have someone show you how to put it on tight enough so you get the support you need.

I had major back issues with my second pregnancy as well. I bought a support from Babies R Us. It did help some, but I don't think it helped majorly. I was low and very out front, it felt like I had a cinderblock glued to my tummy; that was the kind of pressure and pulling I felt. I would come home and cry because of the pain after a long work day on my feet, and it was near impossible to catch a break with a 1 year old at home too. I begged my OB to put me out of work early, but she just told be to suck it up and get a brace. I ended up wearing it only on my really bad days because it was more work then it was worth. I found hot baths to be very soothing too. Once I was able to rest it up pretty well it got better despite the fact that it continued to grow. BTW I have a 9lb baby boy! Good luck, I hope you are feeling better soon!

i am not an expert but wore a belly support with my last pregnancy. I have never been a skinny person but I was all belly with my last, a boy. I had a lot of lower back issues, and was in constant pain. I wore a belly support. I bought it at Sears and it covered most of my belly, it looked like a giant headband and stretched. i believe it helped.

I would try anything else before I took tylenol while pregnant.
Heat packs, massage, belly band, chiropractor's are great with this type of thing for pregnant women.

I don't want to frighten you while pregnant, I just wish someone had told this to me.

I was told to take tylenol while pregnant for severe migraines. If I had to do it over again I would not. I know now that acetominophin inhibits the production of glutithione, and the liver's ability to detox the body. My son now has been diagnosed with a form of autism, and his body is very high in mercury, aluminum, antimony, etc. Things all kids are exposed to through medicines, foods, cookware, fire retardants put on all pj's and bedding for kids, etc. But my kid can't detox that stuff out. I DO believe that the tylenol I took while pregnant affected my child.
Just my 2 cents.

I hope you feel better soon, and best wishes for you and your family.

I got one w/ my 2nd too! It really helped--especially when I went for walks & stuff.
I liked the ones w/ hooks & eyes (like a bra back) rather than velcro. The velcro can get very itchy & if it snags your underpants, you'll ruin them!--Especially if they're nice ones!
Good luck!
