Twins Will Not Stay Dry at Night.

I have twins who are 14 months old. They were born early so they are a little behind other children right now. I am wondering for any parents HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR CHILDREN DRY AT NIGHT? I have tried different diapers, have changed them right before they go to sleep, powdered them, even tried no nighttime bottle; they just woke up at 4 and did not go back to sleep until after 6.
I am asking this because they are still on the small size and the overnight diapers that I see are way to big for them. I do not want to wake them up in the middle of the night to change them but I am tired of having to wash out their clothes and bed linens every day.
PLEASE HELP ME

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for all of your advice and help. I went out and bought a bigger size diaper and tried it during the day first. I put it on them in the morning and left it on to see how long it would last. Well it did the trick. I have not had a wet night unless they go to sleep early and I did not get a chance to change them. They are back to sleeping through the night and I am back to have a small piece of mind. Thank you all again.

When my son was a baby I remember diapers being made different for boys vs girls. But I have NO clue if they do this now. If so, try a boy diaper at night because the padding is thicker up front. I guess this would work if they are belly sleepers.

This is a sheet suggestion instead of a diaper suggestion.
To ease midnight or early morning wet sheets that need changing, double sheet the crib so that you need only peel off the top wet layer(s) and put baby back down on the dry layers underneath. From the bottom it's: mattress, waterproof fitted cover, sheet, waterproof fitted cover, sheet. Making a crib is bad enough, made worse when you have to do it in the middle of the night!
Also, look at the diaper you take off when they've leaked through- is it soaked or did they leak? If it's a leak and not a soaked diaper, try putting it on extra snug and/or with a snug-fitting onesie over it to hold it close to their skin. Sometimes pj pants with elastic can help keep a diaper snug at the top and prevent a leak too.

i had a friend who used poise pads, just stuck them to the diaper, front for a boy, middle for a girl. They sopped up the extra urine.
Your other option is to get rubber pants, the kind they used to use with cloth diapers. I would think they were still available. Then you could put those over the diaper to keep excess from leaking out.
My mom used to sew diapers for my brother because in those days, they only came in one size and he had a problem when he was older. She would use two or three at a time.
Good luck

Okay this is going to sound weird, but have you considered trying to put a bigger size diaper over their regular diapers at night. For example if they wear a size three then put a size four over the three. I know it seems odd but I have a friend who did this and it worked for her. Good luck!

Try a bigger regular diaper at night. The Overnight diapers are HUGE! My dd was very little. She's almost 2 and is still wearing size 4 diapers. She barely weighs 23 pounds, so I know what it's like having a little peanut! For us, using a larger sized diaper at night worked wonders. They seem to hold more pee or something.

Well I used the name brand and did not like them 1 they r expensive 2 did not hold as good either. lol I use the diapers from Walmart Parents Choice LOVE them. Could you be getting them to big. My son is in a 4 he is about 21 lbs and has been for a while I just make sure I have them on high enough and and snug around the waist I still over lap the strap part. Also I would not put powder on them. Powder is not good for babies down below. I stopped doing that A LONG time ago and my oldest is 4. It has something in it not good for girls can cause infection. Just what I have heard. I just load them up in Lavender Chamomile Lotion form Bath and Body Works and off to sleep they go lol.. Good Luck on the diapers.

I am not sure why you would expect babies this age to stay dry at night. Also, it isn't unusual for babies to not sleep consistently through the night until age 2. So waking up at night is still normal at this age. Just change their diapers when they wake up. Usually babies who are sleeping through the night will not wake up just because they pee in their diapers. They may be hungry, so try feeding them if after changing their diapers they don't go back to sleep. Use a nightlight and keep very quiet when you change them so they won't wake completely. Children who are potty trained will eventually stay dry at night on their own. Your babies are too young to potty train them, especially as they were premies and therefore will generally be a little behind for awhile. As a mother, we just have to do these things, so for now you will need to just change them at night and surrender to the fact that may not sleep all the way through the night consistently for awhile longer. I know it is hard. I have experienced the sleep deprivation. This stage will pass, and you will survive... Blessings to you, R.

I know it sounds strange, but put an overnight maxi pad inside their diapers. It's made to hold more and it's cheaper than some of the products designed for babies!

I'd try cloth diapers and get doublers for them. Or, don't laugh, it works...get some cheap micro-fiber shop cloths (usually in the car area) or more expensive micro-fiber kitchen towels and put those inside bigger diapers. I wouldn't stop feeding them at night either, if they're hungry, they're hungry.
Good Luck:)

We used the diaper doublers years ago too, but the poise pads would work just fine and would absorb a lot of extra wettness (they work for me!)

You can also get the short sheet covers, I don't know what they are called, but they are waterproof on one side, and fuzzy on the other, if you can keep thier bottom halfs on them, you would not have to wash the sheets every time at least, just the blankets and the kids!

I know you have gotten a TON of advice and this may have already been said, but honestly I stopped reading after a lady told you to change them in the middle of the night...that is the last thing I would do, unless they are poopy, no way would I be changin them. Call me cheap, call me lazy, whatever...

We had this problem with our son, we bought the bigger size diaper for nighttime. and then when he was big enough for the nighttimes we did the bigger size nighttimes, he never leaked when we did that. Our daughter we have put the higher size on her from birth @ night and we have never had this with her...obviously they pea differently I realize that...but that has seemed to be the solution here @ our house...

thought I would share:)

In the old days they had plastic pants that were worn over the cloth diapers. Maybe you can try that. There may be some still around. I would check over the internet. I don't remember what they were called. It could be either rubber or plastic pants? Good luck. Also try putting one of those pads underneath them. I remember having one of those and making sure it was a bigger size in case they moved. Good luck.

This a neurological/development issue. My one daughter was totally dry around that time. The other daughter was close to 5 years. Who said that a child must be dry at 14 months at night?

I would try a better diaper at night. Ask your friends also.

I agree with Nicky... Huggies Overnight diapers are great if a size 3 isn't way too big for them! (even if they wear a size 2, I bet a 3 would work) We are out of them right now, and my 2 yr old soaks himself every night... it's horrible! When we have them, he never leaks through.

That being said, my twin boys are now almost 10 now... but I so remember what it was like having young twins. Just a little word of encouragement, it DOES get easier! =)

Good luck,
S.

I've never had to use "overnight" diapers. The only time my daughter's ever soaked though was when she needed to move to the next size of normal diapers. We just use the Wal-mart store brand, nothing fancy. You can try just going up to the next normal size.

Good luck.

When my daughter was a baby (now 5) I swore by the Sam's Club brand diapers. These were the only diapers I found that did not leak. She was a small baby and still is and they worked for me.

You didn't mention what size diapers your twins wear. The Huggies Overnight come in size 3. They sell them at BabiesRUs or on-line at www.diapers.com. If these are too big for your girls, try the next size up from their own diaper size. I know how frustrating it can be to do laundry every day. I started my son on overnights when he was about 8 months and they have worked really well so far.

At BabiesRUs they sell pads to put in their diapers. really cheap, like 30 pads for $3.00. They worked great for my daughter through the night. I found them by the baby wipes. Hope this helps. Actually, now that I think about it, I found them at ToysRUs.

I have 13 month old twins and had the same problem a few months ago. I got some great advice which has worked wonderfully for us. The girls wear size 3 diapers during the day but at right before they go to bed, I put a size 4 diaper on them. Every once in a while they still pee through but its rare! By the way, we use Luvs diapers and LOVE them! Hope that helps!

Diaper Doublers, found only at Baby's R Us will solve your problem. They are inserts that go in their regular diaper, and make it so much more absorbant.
Only 2.99 for 30 of them...cheap way to save on sleep and laundry! Worked for my son (who was also on the small size)

I agree with moving up to the next size of diapers. They may look big at first, but everytime I had any issues with my kids peeing or pooping out of their diaper, I moved them up one size and it ALWAYS worked.

I'm all for the extra pads in the diapers at night - what I did was cut up a few old towels into strips and used them. I even got fancy and made flannel "pouches" with the terry-cloth strips in the middle. They have worked really well on my Scorpio twin boys! (On top of that, they're Halloween babies!) I also use that short sheet the other mom was talking about. I bought two and I just rotate them in the laundry. Good luck!

Have you tried 2 diapers at once?
I used cloth diapers and put several on my daughter with the rubber pants over. Maybe you could cut a cloth diaper in half and put that inside the front of their diapers at night. ??

Another vote for cloth diapers! You can customize how much absorbency you need. They have come a long way, and even the "plastic pants" are very different now. I run a cloth diaper service (www.goodnaturedbaby.com), but if you wanted to use cloth only at night, it wouldn't be hard at all to wash them yourself. It would very likely only be pee anyway.

I can't believe people actually are using TWO disposable diapers every night. :O

Try buying some plastic pants, they sale them at walmart, all you do is when you diaper them before going to bed, slide them on over the diaper, it worked for my grandson. Good luck.
