Twisted Ankle

Okay, another stupid question...I twisted/sprained my ankle last night playing with my son. Shortly after it happened, I had a tennis ball-sized lump/swelling sticking out of one of the sides of my ankle. Should I go to the doctor for an x-ray? Or if I should just stick it out with my brace and crutches, when would I go to the DR? I figured the only thing they might do in addition to what I'm already doing is maybe giving me a stronger pain killer. What do you think??

Thanks!

What can I do next?

UGH! I am so sorry this happened to you! I was a 'chronic' ankle sprainer. I would probably get it checked, but likely it is just a sprain. I heard mine crack, etc when I twisted it, but I never had a break. About 3 summers ago, I actually did them both and ended up in two walking boots for the whole summer. SEXY WITH SHORTS! One thing I would HIGHLY recommend that NO ONE, not even the dr., told me is to do a little physical therapy afterward. Since I did PT on mine, I have not sprained it again. That is HUGE for me! Good luck!!!

btw, if you are only doing an ACE bandage, I would switch to a walking boot. You need to immobilize it.

Go to the Dr.

5 weeks ago my foot was bugging me and then started swelling. I did not recall doing anything to injure it. The same foot has been injured in the past so I assumed it was due to the previous injury. Finally, when it got to the point that it would not stop hurting and swelling, I went to my Dr. at Plano Orthopedic and Sports Medicine and I have a broken foot!! I have been wearing one of those removable casts for 3 weeks now. It is a pain in the butt because it is my driving foot so I have to take it off and put it on a lot.

Go get checked out, you never know.

unless you have a lot of experience with twisted ankles, go to the dr. I've played soccer for 27 years, so I don't go to the dr anymore for a twisted ankle unless I can't put weight on it after 2-3 days. I know the drill, but most people don't and they end up doing stuff too soon or they don't do the work to rehab it and then it ends up being a pain for the rest of your life.

I'm assuming you're elevating it and icing it right? Even though you work, that ankle should be above your heart. It's a funny sight to have your ankle up on your desk while working, but you gotta do it.

I say go to the doctor. An x-ray will not show soft tissue injuries, like torn ligaments. But it will show a break or fracture. you should be elevating and icing. for at least a week after the injury. you should also be taking some naprosyn or ibuprofen round the clock for any inflammation. one or the other but not both and according to label dirctions. whether it hurts or not continue to take the naprosyn or ibuprofen. after 2-3 days if no imporvement then I would go to the doctor. He would tell you to do these things anyway, so the next step when you get there will be an x-ray probably. I would also maintain non-weight bearing and continue to use your crutches.
Then when and if you go to the doctor....you can tell him all the things that you have already done and that have not helped. That will help him in the long run also.
good luck,
L.

Well from experience I can really recommend you going to the doctor. The last time I thought I had sprained my ankel, it was broken, was in a cast for 2 months. There are many bones/tendons and if you did damage and don't take care of it now, you'll suffer the rest of your life. I've even heard of bones setting wrong and having to have them broken again to reset. Just go to the doc.
