Ok...I"m only 11 weeks along(we just heard the heartbeat this morning!!!), but I LOVE talking about baby stuff! I'm driving my poor hubby crazy! We have a daughter and it took us the full 9 months to agree on a name. I like unique, he does too, but thinks mine are a little too crazy! And he doesn't want to talk about girl names until we know what we are having!!! He says why rack our brains if we don't even have to! Ahhh...because I want to talk about it!! So, I thought this was the perfect place to come and talk about it! Can you give me some unique girls names that aren't too crazy?

Here are some examples of the names I like that my hubby isn't crazy about...Dalton(my fave), Braelyn, Karsyn, Kayman, Wylie, Harper.

Thanks fellow mamas!!!

So What Happened?

Wow!!! So many responses! I loved some of the ideas I got. I was a little surprised that a few mamas were on the mean side of the names that I wrote down! Everyone is entitled the their opinion, but just because you have a weird/unique name doesn't mean you are going be weird! K. is a pretty weird name, but I'm the most boring/non-weird person there is! But, I do appreciate all of your ideas and all the opinions...I will take those all into account!!! Thanks mamas!!

Hey, can you take one more comment? I am not even going to name a name! I just wanted to add: I always think parents should consider how a name will sound when the child is young; when the child is a young adult and trying to be a professional; and when the "child" is much older. There are some cutesy-pie names or highly unusual or unusually spelled names that will frankly create negative impressions about a professional adult, and would be perhaps embarrassing to call a senior citizen! I know folks would differ, but I've seen it happen. Not that names have to be dull, but just consider the impact later and whether people would snicker at a grown woman being called a certain name. (Yes, this is based on a friend's sister who was given a cutesy name, not Bambi as someone mentioned but similarly candy-sweet and little-girlish, and I dread to think of her calling herself that name as a 30-year-old.). This is why a longer, traditional name that can be shortened for kids and used fully for adults can be useful.

When I hear Kayman I think of caiman the crocodilian species. Dalton and Wylie would be unique for a girl but I personally do not like them. Harper makes me think of Harper Lee and it is become wildly popular for little girls (I know three). Hmmm....unique names....Caledonia, Hansine, Kalliope, Nedda, Winsome. My friend recently had a boy but her girl name was Killian.

Remember that there is a difference b/w "unique" and "totally made-up and likely to result in a lifetime of correcting people"!

Just my thoughts... Dalton sounds harsh and masculine, but would be a great "unique" name for a boy b/c you don't hear it often. "Kayman" is an island that you misspelled. "Wylie" is a coyote, "Harper" is a beer. Seriously, you kind of need to look at what other kids are going to do to the name.

Consider alternate forms of more traditional names if you want something a little unexpected. My niece's name is Bryelle and I think that it's beautiful. I have only met one other person with that being their "whole name" and not "short" for something else.

Creativity is a wonderful thing, but your child will have to go through school and life with the name. If people can't pronounce or spell it, it's going to be tough. Out of curiosity, what is your older daughter's name?

Harper is the best but getting more common! I think Dalton is cute, or Carson. I grew up with an often misspelled or mispronounced name (T.) so not a fan of messing with traditional spellings. Sounds like you like boyish names for girls, which will be unique enough without changing the spelling. I like Amelia, brynn, Dalton, Grayson/Greyson, Hadley, Avery, Bailey/baylie, camryn/Cameron, drew, Emerson, Finley, kendall, kinley, payton/Peyton, Quinn, Reagan/regan, reese, Taylor. Congrats!

HB: will you please stop saying people with weird names turn out weird? That really hurts peoples feelings, I never liked my name growing up and still struggle with it, every time you post this under a names post, it stings! I'm unique like my name, not weird. This is such an unnecssary and judgmental thing to keep saying! :(

I read somewhere of the name Isla and i thought it was beautiful (ee-la, or eye-la) Ive always liked these other names too. Lucille, Chase, Chance, Grace, Cadence, Lilliana or Lillian, Gwenevere, Gwynyth, Ella, Vivian

Out of your names i do like the name Harper, Harper Lee is a great author.

My brother came up with an awesome girls name and now he decided not to use it, it was Nixon, i just lovvvvved it, but they changed the name they had picked out to be Sue, which is quaint and unused.

**edited, id like to add a comment on the weird names makes people weird comment....maybe this is true but i much prefer my children to be weird than normal, but thats just me

I think I'm in the minority. I don't like the names. The "oh-my-gosh-look-at-me-I-have-a-unique-name-because-I'm-more-'specialer'-than-you" trend is annoying.

Dalton makes me wonder if it might get shortened or nicknamed 'Dolly'. And after that all I can think of is Dolly Parton. Now, I like Dolly Parton but she is well-known for two big reasons as well as her voice...

Braelyn, Karsyn, Kayman - not a fan of the spellings. I'm going to bet your husband hates these.

Wylie reminds me of Wyle Coyote.

Harper is about the only one on the list I find palatable. It is becoming very, very popular among girls so your desire for it to be unique, well that might not happen.

Give your child a unique name but not something with a spelling that is completely made up. If it is a girl, she'll thank you later for it.

Wylie is a family (girls) name in our family ((from Wylie Combroke who emigrated from the netherlands -princess of the netherlands, daughter of William of Orange.. who had a whole passel of children making her VERY low in succession) into the US... she has THOUSANDS of descendents, having had 17 children from 4 fathers. The first of which being an uncle who owned and captn'd the ship she sailded on that she married the day the ship set sail to the new world, and whom she divorced as soon as the ship landed... I've always wondered about that; If it was a marriage of convience (aka to get passage) or of reputation (young woman travelling alone) or a love match that didn't survive the trip.)))... anyhow LOVE that name. Both Wylie and Combroke are the english spelling of dutch names that are practically all consonants.

Going historical is DEFINITELY a way to find uncommon names. My son's name is British-Roman, and while very common THEN (couple thousand years ago)... there are only 6 people in the country with his name. Log onto Ancestory.com for names from the past 600-800 years (some lines go older, but royalty usually repeated names like crazy, and past 6-800 years, those are the lines we have records of).

I would avoid changing spellings of common names to "y". Carson, for example, is a GREAT name... but all the y's that are creeping up all over are the opposite of unique, and jump straight into new age trendy. I mean, very welsh, but also very "My crystal talks to me".

I grew up with an unusual name R., except in my family. I was named for my grandma, the first named for her but 2 cousin Rubys followed. So we were known by first and middle name. I don't mind my name but believe it or not often people couldn't spell my name and that was just weird. An ex-bf couldn't spell my name and it's the same as HIS birthstone. (Gee wonder why he's an ex) The other thing that always bothered me was I could never get stuff pre-made with my name on it. Coffee mugs, stationary ect never comes with my name on it, even now. My name has become popular now I do hear parents calling out to their daughters occasionally.
I don't like surnames as first names especially for little girls. It sounds too masculine. Naming your child is the most important gift you give them and the name has to grow with them. Bambi was popular for girls back in the '50's after the movie, too bad Bambi was the BOY deer. And really does the name Bambi sound like a CEO - doctor - lawer to you. Names like Penelope can be Penny for a little girl but grow with her if she wants it to.

People don't turn out weird because they have weird names. What does weird mean anyway? If weird means creative, intelligent, artistic and unique then I hope that my kids turn out VERY weird.

I love the name Harper. My SIL was considering that for a girl name.
I am a big fan of some of the suggestions that you have gotten! Especially the ones that C.T. from Los Alamos contributed.

My daughter's name is Eliana (Ellie-Ah-nah) and it gets mispronouced ALL the time. I could care less because I love that name and it fits her completely.

While I love boy names for girls- shortened versions of girl names....Alex(Alexandra), Joey(Josephine or Joanna), Sam (Samantha)...I think Dalton is just so...boy. That's just my opinion. Dalton seems to be a newer popular name for boys, so it's not like anyone would even consider a girl for it, like some of the others. I do like Wylie and Harper - really like Harper! :)

I have to say that I wouldn't want to name my child a name that's super popular like Olivia, Sophia, Abby, Emma, etc. Love those names, just way too popular! When we knew my 4th was a girl, we narrowed the names down to Vivian and Quin. These names are not popular, but still classy and unique. Sure, there are others in the world, but there is not one other Vivan I know of personally. We didn't go with Quin, because my oldest son has a friend (boy) with that name. I love it for a girl, though!

By posting this question, I assume you are looking for opinions. You will definitely get them, here! LOL! A lot of people don't like super unique names. I think it's because kids get picked on for so many things, these days. It seems hard to take when a name is given that may add to that. I guess I think that kids will find something to make fun of someone for, regardless of the name. That seems harsh, but it's true- if they want to be mean, they find a way :( That being said, imagine yourself calling your child's name to come in to eat. Yell it, like you are calling them. Sometimes, saying it out loud, makes it sound different. :) Also, imagine yourself introducing your child to someone new. Are you prepared for the confused looks and questions? Some ADULTS can be mean. What will you say if they make a comment in front of your child? It's stuff like this, that is real world. I honestly don't think Braelyn, Karsyn or Kayman will illecit too much teasing, but maybe Dalton? Wylie will be Wylie Coyote (although kids today don't know Wylie Coyote so much!! :)

It's a lot of fun coming up with baby names!! I don't have much for the really unique names, but think Harper is awesome! Congratulations and good luck!

I have a unique name and like it. My opinion (and only my opinion) is that if you can think of a creative name, great! BUT, if it's a common name and you're just trying to be creative with spelling, I'd say skip it.

I hate having to spell my name over and over, and on top of that I picked up a last name that's impossible to get right. I understand the misspellings because it is not common, so I have trouble understanding parents who intentionally use "unique" spellings. There was a neighbor girl whose parents named her "Giuliet" instead of "Juliet"??!! To me, it's just laziness in terms of not being able to come up with a unique name and trying to go the "unique" route instead of spelling.

There's nothing more irritating to me than having my name mispronounced (especially in front of an audience) or misspelled. I'm not sure why someone would think it was cool to give their child this deal. Again, just my personal opinion.

I love traditional names, but I think you should go with a name you love....I recently saw a suggestion to try them out...refer to the baby by the name aloud for a couple of weeks and see what you love and what you don't love so much (this might help your husband too). My sister is due in April, and is having a girl. She and her husband picked Parker Elizabeth, to which almost everyone responsed, "Parker is a boy's name". Well, not so much after you live with a little girl named Parker for 18 years. (Our older sister is the only one with kids thus far and they are Jackson, Jefferson, and Ella Kate- her husband is a history fanatic and Ella was her great grandmother's name & she always wished for a little girl named after her). My husband I settled on Hannah Reese and Tanner Huntley (Huntley was his father's middle name), so we get the new and the old. I am named after my great grandmother and my husband's name is very traditional (Ryan Patrick). I do have an acquaintance with a little girl named Carsyn and another one with a little boy named Braelyn (all this makes me think of is Braelyn Edwards the football player.) However, I do love the name Harper. But all in all, go with what you love and won't torture your kid in their adult life.

I have to admit, I'm against names that aren't common. I am having a girl myself (soon) and have yet to come up with a name. But I know that it's not going to be something that people can't pronounce - or look at it and wonder what the name actually is. I'm not going to name her something she is going to have to spell every single day of her life, to every single person who needs her work e-mail, etc.

My maiden name was a tough one. MAN! am I glad it's gone! I used to hate spelling it out. And it was each and every day - multiple times. It got old.

I agree, being unique is fun. but that can be done by having a personality that's different than others. It doesn't have to come from a weird spelling, or a random name.

just my opinion!
