Unsure About Daughter's Upcoming Surgery

My daughter has allergies which cause her to have chronic coughs, colds, ear infections, etc. She has already had her tonsils and adenoids removed, tubes put in her ears, and she takes Claritin every day and gets an allergy shot every week. She also uses a breathing machine when the coughing interferes with her sleep. All of this has helped, but she still gets a frequent cough and cold (about once a month or so). Now her Dr. wants to do a minor surgery that will open up her nasal passages more, to allow mucus to flow better. It is supposed to keep her from staying so stopped up all the time, resulting in fewer symptoms. My question is, has anyone gone through this personally or with their children, and how effective is the surgery? I feel this is something my daughter will just eventually grow out of, and I'm not sure if the procedure is necessary. If anyone could give me more information about it I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

my mom had that done. she is so much better after this surgery. she had been so stopped up, it litterally had her home from work cause of it. but your baby girl will breathe so much easier and be a bouncy happy 3 year old. good luck and youre in my prayers.

My ex-boyfriend had this done when we were together. OMG I can remember him always being congested and having to spit up mucous. After having it done it he said it was so much better, he could breath and didn't have any congestion. His dr said that your nasal cavities are supossed to look like honey combes but his were just all clogged up so they go in and make the holes into 2 big holes. I beleive that this is a risky procdeure, b/c the eye socket is right there. But I would say don't let her child suffer anymore I don't think it will get better.

Hi K., I to have a daughter who has suffered from the same thing but the only differents is that my baby, at that time was diagnose with asthma when she was like 2 months old, well as she grew older and was hospitatlize for pneumonia and several asthma attacks I took her to a ENT doctor and he ran an MRI on her nasal cavity and found that she was real conjested and had alot of mucus in her nasal cavity, I was worried to death because that doc. rightaway schedule her for surgery, gave me all the paper work to register her and what procedure to do after her surgery. I then called one of my neices who also had a child with similar problems she suggested for me to get a second a opinion, which I did.The funny thing about this was the doctors had the same last name but different location and my second doctor gave her an exam and read her history and told me she didn't need the surgery right now for us to try doing this: everytime after she bathe for her to blow her nose real good and then to spray 2 sprays of nasonex on each nostril every bedtime and this worked for her but now your child case may be different but maybe you could suggest this to the doc. to maybe try something else before considering surgery. Right now my little girl is bigger and will understand, if need be, that the surgery will help her breath and sleep better at night because when she doesn't do the right steps in blowing her nose and spraying she will tend to get stuffy again it's a long term thing, especially in allery season. When she was smaller I felt it would be harder for her I was told that the surgery would be a in-and-out surgery and then I would have to flush her nose out every so often to clear her nasal passage from any dired up blood,my daughter would not have liked that at all ,I just freaked and opt to seek a second opinion.I hopes this helps and good luck K. with your little one I will pray for you two, oh if you need my second opinion doc. name and location, send me a personal message and I will give you that info.

i had the surgey done a few years ago and have not been as sick. before that i was sick and on antibiotics every month. it really changed things for me and i did suffer everyday until i had the surgery. now i get sick about 4 or5 times a year. i still have allergies but now i can function better. you may try her on a gluten and casen free diet as well. thse foods make allergies seem worse. i know it's hard to think of your baby going under, but if it helps her, you need to do it. good luck.
