I know of a family who had local karate people do a demonstration at a park, a local band and singers came and performed, a local bbq place made food, there was a bake sale, with the proceeds going to the family in crisis. Local business offered things at auctions. They advertised by putting up flyers, starting a facebook fanpage to help spread the news, even called the news to advertise the event. Also, since he is in school the flyers could go home at his school about the event. The school may even allow it to be done there.

How about holding a garage sale with all proceeds going towards her treatment. Ask her family and friends, classmates, neighbors to donate things to the garage sale and if people want to bring fresh baked goods for you to sell and make some money from that too on the day of the garage sale.

Good luck - you are doing a wonderful thing.

Ask your bank or theirs about accepting donations in their name, then call a radio station in your area and they will be glad to promote it, usually for free. That will get money coming in while you plan something else. Good luck, you're a true friend.

These worked for us....
...McDonalds Night
...Luigi's Pizza and fun center night (Aurora on Prarie st.)
...Fay's BBQ or Mr. B's BBQ
...Wendy's Night (just hand out flyers)
...Odessy Fun World (donated a $75 party pack)

We were able to raise enough for medical/funeral and still have funds left...
Best Wishes! Many prayers for a quick recovery

Check around local resturaunts/bars who may host a spaghetti dinner. Where they donate food, but then drinks/deserts are extra. Then you can organize door prizes that you raffle off. And then do a 50/50 raffle. Usually local businesses are willing to help you out, with advertising, donating etc. It also helps them out as well getting their name out. Don't be afraid to ask for donations that seem even crazy. I have seen where harley davidson has donated a motorcycle to be raffled off. It never hurts to ask. Gather help from friends and family to make calls with you. Good luck, it's a great thing you are doing and will be very much appreciated :)

You have a lot of great answers, I recently was involved with a fundraiser for a girl who has been missing for quite awhile and her family is desperately searching for her. If I am allowed to write this it is in Facebook (American Aubrey Sacco missing) and has not returned or been seen since April. The family wanted to help by sending more people out to search for her. They got together and and found places that donated gift certificates, prizes, etc. decorated a place with her picture all over and did raffles, put the prizes and gifts all over and people put donations of a certain amount in each basket in front of the prizes. Hope that all turns out well. And that this helps.

If the child is uninsured, the parents should immediately enroll child in All Kids. It is available to all uninsured children in the State of Illinois including undocumented children. - www.allkids.com Depending on the parents' income, the enrollment can be backdated up to 3 months.
If the child is insured, then the parents should work with the hospital to get discounts on the charges above what the insurance will pay.
Hope this helps.

One of the easiest fundraisers around for this kind of event is a "dine and donate". find a local restaurant who is willing to donate 20% of the proceeds for everyone who brings in a flyer. All you have to do is find the restaurant and distribute the flyers as widely as possible. The restaurant tracks the flyers that come in and writes a check for 20% of the bills' total.

Ask classmates to do a lemonade/baked goods stand at her school (have to get permission and follow the school rules, of course). Car wash at school is also a good idea. If the school will allow, you could also have a "no bake sale" where people send money in the amount they would have spent on baking something or buying something.

Silent auctions can be profitable, but are a lot of work. They can be done in conjunction with a spaghetti dinner.

Hugely popular events around here are crab feeds. Not quite in season yet, though.

If the child is into any particular sport, you could have a jog-a-thon, or something based on the sport, or alternatively, a read-a-thon. You could do a board game night, like a Scrabble tournament, or Monopoly...

Best site that I know of for do it yourself ideas: http://www.fundraising-ideas.org/DIY/index.html. They have some fabulous and fun ideas.

Start by talking to the family and finding out when the best time for them would be or if they do want it ( some people dont like them)

When we did it for my uncle we started by a general flyer saying we were having a fund raiser and why and the date and asked for donations. Then we had to have the flyer with us and went around to EVERY business we could find and ask if they were willing to donate. We talked to the local churches and asked if thier woman clubs would be interested in donating baked good for the bake sale. The banks were get at donating money! The place where we held it even donated the building for the day. Then we had a bake sale/ dinner ( with free will donation) and silent auction.

When it got closer to the date we made flyers and put it in the newspaper with the details. With some of the money that was donated we bought a large item and used some smaller items that were donated and did a raffle ( we made alot on that )

Go to the sports teams websites and there is numbers on there usually or a place to email them and ask them! We had the ones we ask donate signed jerseys, posters and balls for the auction.

If you have any questions or anything you can email me and I can help more than making this really long!

My heart and prayers go out to you for helping the family and to the family!

I would think it depends on how many of their friends are your friends etc.

You need to do something with the least or no overhead. If you can find a restaurant who will host or donate the food you are in good shape. Then you can charge for the food. If you wish to provide drinks (alcohol) you should have that be a cash bar.

I have been to many fundraisers. The best one that did the most was a walk. Another that was pretty good was a float in the 4th of July parade however, that won't help now. Everyone who walked with the "float" got a t-shirt but was charged 30.00.

Best of luck!

A few years ago, a mother donated part of her liver to her son. The son's treatment was covered by insurance, but the mom's surgery was considered elective and was not covered. The son's school hosted a car wash and bake sale. The kids were in elementary school and did the car washing. In the first hour of the car wash, they raised over $1000, at the end of the day I think they raised a combined $3500. The key is to not put a dollar amount on the car wash. If you say $5, people are more likely just to give $5. If you say donations requested, you will likely get more. Personally, for this car wash, I gave $20 per car and I got 2 cars washed. Also, I spent around $10 at the Bake Sale for 2 cupcakes and some cookies. You may also want to contact the media or radio station (talk to family first and make sure it's okay). If word gets out that you are having a fundraiser, you may get more support.

My mother-in-law is battling ovarian cancer right now and my husband and I decided we wanted to help in some way so this is what we did...

We are hosting a 5K run/walk/bike around our area. We are charging a fee and providing t-shirts for participants. You could choose to not do the t-shirts and keep that extra money that the t-shirts cost and put it towards the fundraiser. Anyway, we found people who would be willing to help and we have been overwhelmed by the amount of people who are making donations and ways to make extra money. For starters, when people turn in their registration form they have been sending additional money than the form says (as an added donation). Also, we have a couple from our church who have a horse and buggy (we live in the country) and they have decided to use their horse and buggy to give people rides for the 5K (for those who do not want to run/walk/or bike it). They are charging people a 50dollar fee to ride. I know that you probably don't have an option like that but you can get creative and think of other things that would be more geared towards the culture you live in. We've had a ton of people sign up for our 5K. We also had someone donate to put an article in the newspaper about the event so that more people would know about it. Oh yeah and another thing we did is that we knew a lot of people who lived in other states who we knew would not be able to attend our 5K but we knew they would love to be involved so we now have 5K races happening the same day and time as ours in three other states. Just an idea. Hope this helps some.

Spaghetti dinners, car washes, some churches even have funds set up for such situations...garage/yard sales, penny collections, hoagie/pizza sales, craft shows/bake sales...I personally have a fundraising program with my Mary Kay business that I'll be more than happy to tell you about in a PM if you're interested.

If you have a bottle deposit in your state classmates can go door to door asking for bottles. We used to do that in high school for basketball and in 1 day would raise almost 1,000 dollars(we have a 10 cent deposit). If the parents belong to a church you could talk to them about having a bake sale, craft sale, indoor garage sale kind of thing. My church does this, we have alot of older people that make blankets and such for a hobby and donate them to the church to sell. Then we have a sale with baked goods, the crafts and garage sale items. Church members volunteer and all proceeds go to the church, that usually raises alot of money too. I also think a car wash is a good idea with her classmates and allison's idea of a walk!

Our community is also dealing with a devastating accident to a 13year old boy. They have set up a bank account at the local bank. As of now, I don't know that there is a particular fundraiser. Often people will just donate the money to the account without any other type of event. If you wanted to make it more family-friendly, you could organize a spaghetti dinner, silent auction etc. But all of that involves work and volunteers. You might just do better by having the "stay at home fundraiser" just sent your check to help out! or the "eat dinner at home with your family" and mail us a check!

Like the other poster suggests you could try calling a radio station or newspaper, the Chicago Trib will usually post a story about a child hurt and then the name of a bank that an account is setup with to send donations. A couple of years ago, a friends son was hurt and her SIL worked with a restaurant to setup a buffet in a private room. Plates were $35 and included dinner and 2 drinks. I think the restaurant got $23 for the food and the family got the rest.
