Want 2 Quit

I'm a single mom of a 7 month old. This going to work everyday thing is killing us. I'm stressed, he's stressed, our dog is stressed. We're gone from home 11hrs a day between work and travel. I am looking for a way to quit and make sufficient income to support us. Any ideas? I have thought about WAH data-entry (I'm not a very good sewer, but a real good typer). Has anyone tried this? Any reputable resources would be appreciated. Hoe do you balance work-time and baby-time? Thanks!

I don't have any suggestions on data entry but I do know of something else that you can do from home and make a lot of money doing. If you are serious and want more details, let me know at ____@____.com a single mom, I was looking for a way to be able to stay at home so I understand how you feel.

Hi, my name is L. Mang, I'm 23 and live in St. Francis Wisconsin. Are you a single mom? Because I just started to work from home just recently. It's been good if only I could dedicate myself more. I'm only making pennies right now because I can't dig in. If you are good at talking to people, especially mom's this could work for you too. But it'll be best to have an income coming in while you start to grow. I love what I do, I just need more time and comitment from myself.

The easiest thing I found was to do daycare. It only takes a short time to get liscensed, and you can take as many or as few children as you want. It is REALLY hard to find legit data entry from home jobs. I've heard Ebay selling is ok, too. Good Luck!

We all pay taxes to help our own. Our country has great opportunities. There are housing programs, food support, Medical Insurance through the state, headstart preschool, scholarships for education, food shelves, etc. etc. etc.. Take advantage of what's out there and use it towards your advantage. I'm not saying being lazy or use these things on a permanent basis but that's what it's for. I feel like the country is so messed up in ways I get screwed to work. I've tried it, I've worked all sorts of differnt jobs ranging from $6-$13dollars a hour. I've been on welfare. I've tried it all and I was always broke. If I made anything over 10 dollars a hour I no longer qualified for assistance but still didn't have the money either. If I made under that I relied on the county to feed my child and I. I have always gotten childsupport and worked up until one year ago. I am doing better not working than I was working. I'm responsible with money and stick to a budget but since I stopped working we always have food on the table and I can always pay my rent. When I worked full time I couldn't put food on the table and was constantly late with rent. If I had a education I could probaly but not guaranteed to get a good enough job but that's not a guarantee. I've tried college 3x and even with grants can't financially afford it. I'm a single mother because I chose to take my daughter and myself out of a abusive situation. I've always recieved childsupport and tried to work and be a single mother but when my daughter was 4yrs.old I gave up and honestly I'm happy for the first time in years. I'm not proud that I don't work but it's what works best for my daughter and I. Now my daughter is heading off to kindergarten and I'm considering working again but did the math and will get screwed and lose so many benefits it won't be worth it. I'm stuck between a rock and hard spot. If I was a two parent household I could work and make it but I'm not. I should also add I have very little to no support at all. My mom died when I was 19 and my dad isn't the least bit supportive. I don't have family to count on or anyone willing to help even with babysitting. I live in public housing and hope to get out of this situation eventually. I was on the waiting list for 3yrs. and struggled. If anyone's interested my townhomes are being completely renovated/remodeld and we have close to 10-15 empty units. They aren't moving anyone new in til they're done but they'res no waiting list right now either I have a feeling when they're done with remodeling it'll be a piece of cake to move in here. I'm telling everyone this because I waited and struggled 3 yrs. to get into this housing. If feel for those of you who are on waiting lists. Shoot my wait on the Washington Co.Section 8 list is 5-7 years and I've already been on the list for 2 yrs. I think my wait on Richfields list was like 12yrs.or something. We need to stop worrying about who's on welfare and who's not and concentrate on making it possible for single parents to raise their kids and be self-sufficient. We're all different with all different problems and situations and differnt amounts of support but we are ALL AMERICAN. We have all paid taxes in one way or another. The only option I honestly see for myself is to not work, or work under the table and cheat. I can continue to hope for that wonderful job making $15dollars a hour but in reality it's not going to happen anytime soon, I can hope I will find Mr.Wonderful and get married that would work too having two incomes makes a world of a differnce but that's hope and not something I can count on. But until I figure out how to make this work I will continue to love my daughter, be a good mom, go to church and pray. God has a plan for all of us. It could be worse I could live in a 3rd world country or have a child with medical problems. I am thankful for everything I do have.

R. this isn't just to you, but to all those other ladies out here too! I do daycare in-home because when I was working out side the house I never saw any money and I wasn't able to raise my own children. Both my husband and I struggled to make it home before daycare closed and to avoid extra fees. Now I'm home with both children and run a daycare with reasonable rates. I'm not out to screw anyone over! I also sell Partylite, with this home show company you pay no start up cost even if you decide it's not for you. For more information on starting your own business with Partylite please check out my website www.partylite.biz/TammyScheler

and if there any questions I would be more then happy to answer them for anyone!! Good luck to everyone, life does through us some tough time we just need to pray and work through them no matter how hard it is!!!

Finding work family balance is an issue. You can try local employement agencies and specify what hours and pay you are looking for. You can also accept or reject positions that they have available.

I think I have found work/family balance. I am home to see my kids off to school and am home after school and can attend their sporting events. I work part time for a local company and I have very flexible hours. THe only thing is that it is undergoing major restructuring and so I am not sure how long I will have that opportunity.

So I decided to take control of my life and I started selling AtHome America Products. I can pick my AtHome hours around other family activities. I just started 2 months ago and have earned over $1000 in commission and over $1500 in homewares. I have only hosted 6 parties, but could host more. Plus I am on my way to earning a laptop and a free trip to Chicago this fall. They make rewards easy to attain and the best part of all, I got to start my business for FREE. So I had nothing to lose.

The other neat thing is that they are quality products and they have great rewards for hostesses to earn FREE and discounted products. So it is win/win situation all the way around. Win for you in earning money, Win for your family that you are available. If you want to discuss this, see my ad in the business section--or visit my website at www.athome.com/DeniseWildish

You can decide how much money you want to make and when you want to work. I like the flexibility, the money and the time I get to spend not only with my kids but my husband too.

Hi R.-

If you have good typing skills, you may want to consider working for one of the TDD Relay services. Basically, the work consists of relaying phone calls between people who use a TTY machine because they are deaf, or have a speech disability, etc. You listen, you type, you read typed responses out loud. It is actually a pretty fun job, and pays pretty well, but the best part about it is that you make your own schedule. They need to cover the phones 24 hours a day, so you can really choose the schedule that works for you. There are two TDD services in the Madison area - one is called Wisconsin Relay, I don't know the name of the other one. I sometimes see classified ads for them, but I am pretty sure they are almost always hiring.

I also want to share with you a resource available to us parents when we're feeling STRESSED! If it helps to just vent and talk to someone, you might try calling the Parent Stressline ###-###-####. It is totally free, confidential and anonymous and is staffed by volunteers who are there to just listen. I know it helps me to talk it out when I get stressed, and I have always felt better after calling. It has been really great for me as a single mom because usually there isn't another adult around to turn for support when I need it. A couple times I even learned about some resources available to parents that I wouldn't have known existed otherwise.

I felt weird the first time I called (I never called a line like that before) but the woman who answered was really nice and I ended up talking to her for more than an hour! I guess I didn't realize how much I had to get off my chest... Anyway, that's just an idea for managing the stress until you find a solution. Good luck!

R., I would recommend looking into subsidized housing programs. The waiting list for Section 8 could take YEARS, however other forms like project based and section 42 (which allows you to make up to $30,000 but you never pay more than $5-600/month) and other programs such as The Jeremiah Program in Downtown Minneapolis and Commonbond communities have shorter wait lists. You could then get on MFIP (welfare.)
Affordable housing would allow for you to work or volunteer part time and go to school and many of these housing programs have childcare in the same building. They are safe, clean, and affordable. Although many mothers have ethical concerns with going on welfare, I believe that it is a service we (and our own parents) have paid for a hundred times over with our taxes and if we pay for it we should at least be able to utilize it. It is designed specifically for these situations.
Whether or not we can make it is not the question in a single parent situation- its the quality of life for the child. I chose to spend more time with my child during her early years and live frugally while I was in school.

I graduated from the Jeremiah Program with a B.A. and am now in Grad school- happy, and healthy. Although these programs ask a lot- it sounds like you already are.

Hope this helps

I TOTALLY know the feeling. I am now a single mother of two children and work full-time, while also trying to complete a bachloer's degree. It is very stressful and not easy on anyone!

I might have this wonderful opportunity for you. I have not tried the WAH, but I have a "second income" from Home and Garden Products. You work from your home, make your own schedule and are your own boss! I am an independent designer for Home & Garden. The income is wonderful. An average party of $300 brings me $120 and that is for one night of 2 hours of work! I don't make that much in one day at my full-time position. Here is a no obligation number to call if you might be interested. If you'd like further information, please feel free to email me at ____@____.com! Also, please feel free to check out our website at homeandgardenparty.com to see our beautiful products!

Hang in there R., it does get easier. Make sure to take care of yourself too! Sleep when baby does if at all possible! My children were colic, so I rarely got sleep and had to deal with screaming children while my ex-husband worked 3rd shift!

Best of luck to you!

I'm a SAHM and am very fortunate that I have a husband that does well enough for me to be at home. However, if I ever had to go back to work I would definitely do daycare. If I remember correctly, you don't even need a license if you do it for 1 family. Otherwise, the nanny thing might be good if you don't have a big enough place to fit a daycare. Pretty nice to go and spend the day in a big house and play all day with the kids. A lot of people don't even want you to do housework because they want your attention on the kids.
A great work at home job is doing medical transcription but I think that requires an education to do that. I used to work in medical records and would send out the transcription tapes to the ladies and they would enter them at home.
Best of luck to you.

It's hard not knowing your professional background...however, if you got creative about it, I'm guessing you could develop a client base for freelance secretarial work...things you could do from home, for instance for:

churches
professional groups
small businesses (I mean small, one or two people operations such as attorneys, psychotherapists, sole proprietors)

You'd want to make a list of the services you could provide, figure out how much you would charge, develop a simple brochure and circulate.....

Oh and if you are interested in making some extra money it is soooo simple! All you do is refer other customers. The best part is there is no risk! Everything has a money back guarantee. I also am looking to work from home but I have few options. I am pregnant with our second child and was just put on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy so I wouldn't be able to do partylite or mary kay or anything like that. However, I was going to check into processing medical/billing claims for doctors from home. I believe you do have to have some education for this but from what I hear you can complete it in as little as 4 months. The problem with this is I haven't heard anything about any doctors looking for people to do this, I could just be looking in the wrong places. Just a suggestion, if you do happen to find anything good would you let me know, I'm getting a little frustrated in my searrch.

I was in the same situation. And my boys were in school. I finally got sick of missing all the school functions. I now work 5 part time jobs... but they all are different, all are extremely flexible, and don't keep me away from home so long (I usually work less than 40 hours a week and make as much as I did with my regular job). I do merchandising, demonstration and resets. I started out mystery shopping part time after my regular job and after a few months, I was doing enough of it to quit. Mystery shopping can be difficult, though because you often have to pay money out for the mystery shops and then wait to be reimbursed. So to avoid that I started doing demonstrations and then moved into merchandising. The key to finding these jobs is NEVER use the sites that you have to pay for. There are many message boards and companies you can register/apply with for free. There is one major downside to doing this. Most companies hire you as either an independent contractor (which means you have to pay self employment taxes on it at the end of the year, but you can claim business expenses) or a part time employee. I work as both so that the taxes get balanced out. Neither of these statuses entitles you to any benefits (read as "insurance") in most cases, so you either have to pay for it or try to qualify for just medical assistance.

I do not think welfare is the right choice. If you are able to work I think you should keep your standard and not lower it. I think childcare may be a great choice. It will cost about $500 to get licensed, you will need to take a class or two each year, and your home will have to be up to code. You can write off many expenses and I think you can get food for free for the kids. Something to look into anyway. There are lots of work at home scams so it's hard to say what is good and what isn't. I'm not sure of you situation but maybe if you don't get child support maybe that would be something you'd consider getting and then work part-time. I hope you're able to find something to spend more time with your child. I work 8.5 hours and it's hard to be away even that long but if you could cut your hours back or find another field I think you'd be happier than your 11 hour days. Good luck to you.

Hi! I used to be a single mother of 2, now I am engaged, but I know excately where you are comming from. It is a double edged sword. Your feel quilty when you are working, and not home. And you feel guilty when you stay home and are not working.
My advice, go to college. Get a career in a field that is flexable, and something that you enjoy. It makes going to work that much easier.
If you want to stay home, get a part time job. Work few hours, and take more days off to spend with son.
I personally, became a daycare provider. I know stay at home and still make money. You have to have a big heart and alot of patience to do what I do.
Hope some of this was helpful! Where there is a will there is a way!

Before you consider doing an in-home daycare, make sure you check into all the codes and permits that you would need. It could be quite costly, but you should be able to write off part of your utility and house payments as business expenses.

Beyond that I don't know what to tell you except good luck.

I even teach people how easy it is to make money just by sharing our products with Family, Friends, Co-Workers, & Neighbors....some people don't even do Spas outside the home. It just depends on how much money you want to make and how much time and effort you put into your business!

I am struggling with the same issues! Just another thought..you don't have to be licensed to do in home child care for kids from one family...more than that, then you do. I don't think you get any perks (free food, tax deductions, etc) with that set up but it is a start. You would get great baby-time with your son, wouldn't have to pay daycare, and he'd meet some little friends. The going rate here is about 150 dollars per kid per week.

Hi! I went through the same thing when my son was a baby. He is now 2 1/2 and I just this week went back to work and put him in daycare. I worked while he was a baby, and there was even a great daycare center at the company, with a nursing room where I could go and feed him on my breaks. That I think may have just made it worse. I thinik it is really important for children to be raised by their parents, and not a daycare. I am a single mom too, and know how hard that is. I finally decided to try working in a daycare center, but it only lasted 5 months because the children were treated so horribly and I couldn't stand it. So then I found a job as a nanny. I went to someone's house every day from 6:30 am to 4 pm, and took care of their daughter (from 6 months old till 18 months old), and got their 9 year old ready for school. I was able to bring my son with me and be with him all day. It is like being a stay at home mom... but in someone elses house and taking care of their kids too. It was great, I absolutely loved it! I only got paid $200/week, but I was allowed to bring my laundry and do it while I was working, and take the kids anywhere I wanted to go. There are plenty of higher paying nanny jobs, but usually less relaxed. Me and my son were fed breakfast and lunch, and they provided diapers since he is the same size as their daughter. He got to socialize with other kids, and learned to not get jealous when mommy holds another baby. I could bring him when he was sick, and also took care of their kids when they were sick (they had already been around eachother and exposed anyway). It was definitely the greatest job in the world that I could have ever had. My son turned 2 in April, and since then it has gotten to be too much to never have a break. Being a single mom, there is never any help or time away. I started getting too crabby with him and needed a break, and decided we both were ready to go back to full time work/daycare. I know it is the right time for us. So last Friday was my last day as a nanny and on Monday I started back at my old job, and he started at a great daycare. A lot of people didn't like that I took a lower paying job when I could have made more money, and thought that the money was more important for Connor, but I beleive that I gave him a great start to his life by being in it. I had a lot of older mad at me for getting medical assistance... but when I was working before, after I paid for daycare, I didn't have much more money anyway. Is $100/month extra after daycare and taxes really worth not being with your child? To me it wasn't. Now for going back to the same job I had before, I got a HUGE raise from what I made before, and it makes it worth it. I get the break from him that I need now that he is older, and we both will appreciate our time together more. He has done great this whole week with daycare, but I really miss the time I used to spend cuddling with him during the day. I say stay at home with your son! You may make less money, but your first and most important job in your life is to be a mother to your son and give him the best life you can, and I don't think that extra spending money can compare to the time cuddling and playing together and teaching him things! As he gets older, the need to be with him will be less, and I think you should just go with things as they come, you will know what is right for the 2 of you when the time comes, and when you need to be together, it is important to do it, and you will know when you are ready to move on again and give that up. You will see the change in your son and know when he is ready. I never thought I would go back... but over time I noticed he was ready... and I made the change over a couple months and made sure I did it right, and I think what I did before was right for us then, and what I am doing now is what is right for us now. GOOD LUCK!!!

I work at home from a company called young america corp. I make enough money to stay home and take care of the kids. It has really worked for me. I do not know where you live but they have pick up and drop off sites all through the metro. You have to pick up and drop off at their times but they do pay you for your diving time. let me know if you would be intrested and i will send you all the info..

Have you given any thought to having your own home daycare?Ok now that I am off.. With home daycare there are things you hav eto do but, it is well worthit. You can write off toys, you get reimbursed per child for the food that you serve, as well as you can count your child as one of your daycare kids also. I did it for 4 years until my little one became school age. Good luck

I am very wary of those "work from home" things. I have never heard of WAH data-entry, so I wont speak ill of it.

When I was a stay at home mom, I did daycare for 1 family. That kept me home, gave my daughter someone to play with, and replaced income when I lost my job. If you could schedule that while your husband is away from home, then when he is home is family time, no extra people...just a thought

Just be carefull for all of those posts out there that sounds really great but actually never pan out!!! I tried a few of them but only wasted money trying to get started. If you do find anything good, let me know. I am a stay at home mom as well, but have been looking into ways to make a few extra bucks.

I worked full time before we had kids and took the first year off. We really needed some extra cash though. So I bit the bullet and became a 28 year old waitress. UGH!! However I almost always made 15-20 dollars an hour at a 5-6 hour shift which is better than you can find at pretty much any part-time job. My husband would come home from work and I would leave. The great part is that you have total flexibility in your schedule, if you need a week off you just ask off! It's fun, I made great money and we didn't have to pay any childcare. I highly recommend it. I'm now working a part-time job at Northwestern Mutual but I still have my waitressing job to pick up hours at when I feel like it.

Well you certainly live in a large enough city that would have lots of daycares, veterinarian clinics, beauty or nail salons and more businesses plus homes that need indoor air purification, water purification and/or our laundry water treatment unit that makes it so detergent, softeners, bleach or hot water nor pre-sorting of clothes is needed to do laundry any more....so my home based business might be an option for you. I started it 4 years ago and love solving real basic every day problems for people.

Go to: http://www.yourbreaktofreedom.com/aawp and register in - that just sends me an email letting me know you were serious enough to check it out...that's all. Then view the all the info. on the website. Plus go to http://www.ecoquestintl.com/aawp - that's my U.S. Inc. 500 manufacturer of all the purifiers - see all the dropdownlistings of products along the blue bar and then click on "opportunity" and use the password prosper to see the full presenation. It's real products providing $250-300 commissions on the Fresh Air PUrifier & Laundry Pure alone plus residual income when you train others to do what you're doing. You can retail all over the U.S. and Canada...not just in Milwaukee.
