Wanting a Makeover - Need Referral for Makeup "Artist" (Correct Title?)

Hi, I'm 32 years old and have 3 wonderful children. I see all those mom's that start to let themselves go because they are so preoccupied with their children - truth is, it's easy to do! Well, I don't want to be one of those mom's.

I need a referral for a good makeup person at a salon. About the only thing I wear is a little eye shadow and eyeliner. I've been tempted to make an appt at Simonson's in Maple Grove, however, I'm scared I'll get some older woman who will make me look like goofy. I want someone to show me how to apply it correctly and tell me what colors look right with my skintone, etc.

I'm in the Northwestern suburbs, so Maple Grove, New Hope, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, Minnetonka (Ridgedale) areas would all work.

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My sister went to Ulta to get her makeup done for a wedding, they did a great job and my sister ended up loving it so much she buys all of her makeup there now. Their website is http://www.ulta.com/control/main and there is a place to search for locations. Good Luck!!!

Hi M.,
I know a great gal up in Forest Lake at the Adevia Spa (also at Caryl & Co in North Branch). Her name is Patty Murray and she does exactly what you described. It's a bit out of the way but she's affordable and very normal. She also does permanent makeup. I had my eyeliner done last winter and LOVE it!

Hey M., I just responded to your dentist question. But anyways...

I know it's not in the suburbs you mentioned, but I would highly recommend the Aveda School in Minneapolis. I had a consult there for a wedding about a year and a half ago and LOVED it. The student I had probably graduated by now - but the students actually are pretty knowledgeable. They are all usually pretty young so you don't have to worry about weird 70's makeup re-hashed for you. The nice thing too, is that if by some chance the student does something you don't like, you can walk away knowing you didn't spend a ton of money (which is why I love them).

I have a recommendation that's more than just makeup. Laura Ely is a woman with a business called "Discovery Your Beauty". She gives you a color palette for your clothing of your Best Colors for your skin, hair and hair color and she does your makeup as well. I did this 5 years ago and it was a wonderful thing that I use every day. All of my clothes are now in my color palette and I totally changed how I wear my makeup. It's more expensive than just getting your make up done, but it was definately worth it.

Here's her info. You can call or e-mail and talk to her about it and then decide if it's for you or not.

M.,

Before trying to pay someone to do a makeup consultation try a place at the mall! I went to the "Clinque" counter at Macy's or other big stores - one of Ridgedale's big stores would have it... and they will do a consultation for free! You really don't have to buy the product if you don't want. (I really like the eyeliner there though) There are other counters too but I like clinque myself - I don't wear a lot of makeup so I like the product there. Also, there is always having one of the mary kay parties too -I used to have a rep but not sure if she does it but I am sure they have a website - they are pretty good at matching skin tones too.

Hope this helps, good luck.

My daughter had her prom makeup done at Simonsons last May and both gals working there that morning were probably around your age. Everyone commented on her makeup because it was not overdone but definitely formal. It complimented the dress and hair perfectly. I was totally impressed. I wish I could remember the gals name but I was pretty nervous that morning :).

So, I would recommend them but the downside is... do you really want to get your product there? The product you use can make a huge difference. We bought the lip gloss she used so my daughter could re-apply and it was $25!

Back when I was working, I was very into Estee Lauder but since I'm home with kids now and shouldn't be spending that kind of money, I have really enjoyed Mary Kay. There foundation rivals the Estee Lauder brand and it is $21 cheaper! The other nice thing about Mary Kay is they provide ALOT of education on application. I thought I knew the best way to do my makeup, colors to choose etc. (I've always been a makeup girl) but my girlfriend had a show and I learned so much. I always thought is was for old ladies but I guess I am one now! I think they teach a very "polished" look.

Good luck!
