What Is Appropriate to Wear?

I have a wedding this weekend, that is at 10 am, followed by a lunch reception. I have no idea what to wear. All I have are black cocktail-type dresses that I wear to my company holiday parties...is this appropriate for a wedding so early in the day??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies! I didn't think what I had would be appropriate for that time of day. I went to Ross on my lunch break and found a nice knee length, sleeveless light gray dress with a ruffle down the front (and to the side), that I can also wear to work!

Perfect! Appreciate all the responses and insight :)

if the black dresses are simplistic & not flashy...then it's okay.

Pair the dress with bright colors....both with shoes & accessories.

One of my friends was recently in a wedding. The bridesmaids wore black dresses & bright yellow shoes. A combo I would not have considered, but it looked great!

No, this is not a cocktail attire wedding, that would be if it were after 5. I would suggest something with color, tea or knee length, a pencil skirt and nice blouse or a nice dress - something you would wear on Easter Sunday or whatever the NICEST Churchly attire you have.

I'm not sure going with a black cocktail dress for a morning wedding would be appropriate. If you had a cute dress along the same lines in a different color, maybe.
It's hard to answer not knowing the formality involved, but I would try to find something lighter and more "daytime".
If black is incorporated in the color scheme, you might get away with it, but a black coctail dress to a morning wedding is something I wouldn't attempt.

That's just me.
You live in Ontario. Surely you could find a sweet, more conservative and "daytime" type dress.

Just my opinion.

I would say not in any way would a semi formal dress that is normally worn to a cocktail party appropriate for a morning wedding. If it is in a church that is more sedate, like a Catholic or large Baptist, a more formal type wedding then you are going to stand out like a sore thumb if you wear anything that is evening wear.

If it were me I would wear a dress like I would wear to an office environment, to a church that still dresses nicely, not a wear your favorite tank, cut off, and flip flops kind of church, but a church where women still wear heels and dresses. I would not want to look too stuffy of course but I would not wear something that looked so out of place as a cocktail dress.

Got this from a website (http://weddings.weddingchannel.com/wedding-planning-ideas...:

Morning Wedding
Think "special clothes". Depending on the season, your attire is likely to be lighter colored and a bit more casual that you might wear for an evening wedding. Men should still plan to wear a suit or nice sports coat and slacks, and a tie. Women can wear a nice dress, skirt or suit, and might opt for something comparatively colorful, or floral.

Afternoon Wedding
Dress essentially as you would for a Morning Wedding.

....and this from another (http://fashion.about.com/cs/tipsadvice/a/weddingguest.htm)
Don't wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.
Don't wear black or sequins during the daytime.
Don't worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can't possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.
Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn't belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it's appropriate, it probably isn't.
Don't wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.
Do take off gloves to eat or drink.
Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.

Sooooo....I don't think black in the morning is the ideal way to go. If you MUST wear black, as this is short notice to get anything else, pick the least formal looking of the black dresses you have. Try to "casual" it down a bit, with colorful accents so it doesn't look "too evening" (i.e. cocktail-y or sequins!). If you have a black dress with a different trim...pick that O.!

Have fun!

I'd probably look for a something in a color. Brights are in fashion now and super cute for a morning/daytime event. If you have time to pick something up, you could probably even find a cute dress at Target.

If not... Is the dress fairly simple? How about some brightly colored jewelery or even a bright cardigan to go over the black dress?

I think those would be fine. You could add a colorful scarf or other accessories.

Depending on the material and cut of the dress, yes.
You could also wear a pants suit/outfit or an attire similar to what you would wear to Sunday Church or a Graduation.

I'm personally not a fan of black for a *day* wedding....but if you can't get a dress in another colour/pattern, then it'll be fine. It's not like they're gonna throw your out ;o)

If you don't have anything elegant for the daytime and don't want to buy it, you could still drop the black dress and bust out your best pair of classic pants/skirt and dressy blouse. You could dress them up with a flowy, light but abundant in size, colorful scarf loosely tied around your shoulders and a matching clutch and/or shoes. A good, persistent perfume, jewellery and great hair and make up will compensate the simplicity of the outfit.Just an idea to use what you already have.

I definitely agree with the moms that said not to go with the black cocktail dress (or any fancy cocktail dress for that matter). For a daytime wedding I would go with "Easter" or "Sunday Best" or "Business" (not business casual) attire. I'm sure there will be some people that dress fancier but they will stand out. Even at my fancy evening wedding, there were plenty of people wearing more "Church Attire". I thinks it's a safe bet.
