You can have D&C's for other reasons as well. I had one and I have never been pregnant. I was having horrible periods (lasted three weeks at a time, three or four days off, then back on for another three weeks, and I was bleeding through a tampon and a pad from the time I left the bathroom till I walked downstairs). Anyway, I had one and it got much, much better.

I had one 3 weeks ago, because my baby died at 12 weeks. It was a missed miscarriage, which means I did not have any spotting or any idea it was happening until I went in for a scan and the OB couldn't find a heartbeat. The procedure is a surgery used to take the baby out as opposed to letting the body miscarry on its own. You're given a general anesthetic, and it's a 10-15 minute procedure where the surgeon scrapes the uterus out. I was not able to choose to naturally miscarry because 1) I couldn't wait that long knowing I was still carrying the baby, and 2) it was dangerous because I was so far along that there was a possibility to hemorrhage, in which case I would have needed a D&C anyway.

I know they can be for other issues as well, not just for babies, but if they need a tissue sample from the uterus to look for other problems. But this was my experience.

Question: What is a D & C? (Dilation and Curettage)
Answer: A D & C is also known as a dilation and curettage. It is frequently performed when a pregnant woman is known to have suffered a miscarriage, blighted ovum or missed abortion (Where the baby died but a miscarriage did not spontaneously occur.). A D & C is not always necessary after or during a miscarriage. Be sure to talk to your doctor about what type of care is best.
