What to Do About Hair Loss

I am 33 y/o and I have been fighting with my hair shedding for over a year now. I had a baby 3 years ago so that isn't it. My thyroid is fine and so are my other labs. It isn't in clumps but it is thinning. It had slowed down for a couple of months but it is getting worse.

I am on a good multivitamin (PMS relief from Physician's choice), Wellbutrin, Nexium, and I am trying Reliv products but it is still falling out. I have tried Nioxin shampoo/conditioner but it makes me break out.

Could a hormone like progesterone be out of whack? Any ideas on diagnosis or treatment?

What can I do next?

You your thyroid is fine, but do you know whether they used the old lab ranges or the new lab ranges for TSH? And, did they also test Free T3 and Free T4, which are the usable circulating thyroid hormones. Also, did they check your ferritin levels? That can also be a cause of hair loss? And, yes, other hormones can impact this too, but the thyroid is the most common to be out of whack and it's extremely common for the auto-immune thyroid disease to be triggered by pregnancy/childbirth. Also, the Nexium can impact your ability to absorb nutrients, so you might consider whether that's absolutely necessary on a regular basis (I have that Rx also, but I use other things like ginger and DGL (deglycerized Licore root) to resolve the issue and only use the Nexium (or Prevacid) as a last resort).

I have had hair thinning since my two surgeries that were almost back to back. I had gallbladder removal and then an ectopic pregnancy which required emergency surgery. I was told that the anesthesia could have affected my body system since the surgeries were so close together. I have two children as well (ages 8 and 5) so hormones are also a factor in the hair thinning; not to mention stress.

There is a lot of things that could affect hair loss. Unfortunately, both of my parents have thinning hair so I have the whammy as well.

If you find something out, please share. I so hate my thinning hair!!

I totally feel your pain, I am 35 and in the same situation. I believe my problem to be hormonal since the change happened after my 2nd child, my hair had always been straight then changed to wavy and began thinning. I spoke with a dermatologist who told me I had female pattern baldness and nothing could really be done. I have a friend who is into homeopathics and I have just started working with her taking additional supplements. She seems to think we can get this reversed and I pray she is right. You might check out her website at www.sharonkrahn.com. I'm not her business person just trying to help. I'll be watching to see what other people say too. I think this is a huge untalked about problem with women of this generation and it has gone unaddressed. I can't help but think the hormones in our foods are affecting us because our grandmothers didn't have this problem...at least not as wide spread. Thank you for bringing this up.

I had a hair loss problem after stomach surgery. My doctor said I wasn't eating enough protein. It could be something with your diet. Some women do have hair loss like some men get. They say you inherit it from your mother's side of the family.Does anyone else in your family have this problem? I do know hormones can cause hair loss.

I would certainly suspect a vitamin/hormone problem. I took Aciphex for years, which is similar to Nexium. I was feeling pretty run down after my son was born, and experiencing hair loss. I finally when to good doctor who did the right thyroid tests, and was found to by hypothyroid. Also, he said by blocking stomach acid with Achiphex I was also blocking my ability to absorb certain B vitamins. My B12 levels were very low. I start thyroid treatments and supplements, and feel much better. I know you don't live close, but I see Dr. Eldon Robinson in Lubbock ###-###-####). He is great at hormone/vitamin testing, and very easy to talk to. He also takes most insurance. Good luck.

Medication can cause hair loss. I have diffuse hair loss and have been diagnosed with AGA or female pattern baldness. You need to find a great dermatologist that can diagnose you properly by doing a scalp biopsy along with blood work. I see Angela Bowers in Southlake and there is also a world renown hair loss specialist in Dallas named Dr. David Whiting. He does not take insurance though. I am on a treatment of Spironolactone and Rogaine but there is not really a cure just things to slow down the loss. E-mail me if you I can help you by answering any questions. Good luck.

You might want to try Arbonne scalp revitalizer. It helps hair grow. The shampoo and conditioner is self adjusting and also works well. They have come up with a new line of detox products that includes a detox hair, face and body wash in one and a hair mask. Since I have been using the detox products my hair seems to been much thicker. Visit www.betsycampbell.myarbonne.com to purchase.

Call your pharmacist and ask them if ANY of your medications could have an underlying adverse reaction that could cause hair loss. I was taking an anti-depressant and starting losing MY hair by the HANDSFUL. I was assured by the Dr. it was NOT due to the medication. But lo and behold, it WAS!! It was a rare case as it was one of the LEAST adverse reactions listed, like maybe 2% of subjects tested. But yeppers, I was in that 2% bracket. As soon as I changed my medication for depression, the hair loss stopped and it's all back to being very full and thick.

Just a thought.

Good luck

M.,
I was also dealing with hair loss and all of the thyroid tests were negative. May I suggest that you contact Dr. Donna Smith. I have been a patient of hers for 2 years and I highly recommend her. Her office is in Wichita Falls but she has patients all over the United States. Give her a try. She counsels people by phone/internet sometimes; she would welcome your call. Her number is ###-###-####. May you be successful in finding a treatment which reverses your hair loss.

It could be a combination of the Wellbutrin and Nexium along with the vitamins or it could be hormonal related. Check with your doctor and ask for a blood test to see if you are low in hormones or something. I was very sick 2 years ago and a lot of my hair fell out in small clumps; I couldn't touch it without it coming out and what was left was really thin. It grew back but not as thick. Good luck.
