Hello moms! I want to know when kids start to bathe alone? I have a 6 yo and I am trying to get her to start taking showers. I stay close by to help with the shampoo- but is she ready to do it alone? Every now and then she hops in the bath with little sis, which is very helpful! But, now that school is bout to start Im trying to come up with a time conservative night time routine. It would be great if she could bathe while I put the little one to bed. I dont want to rush things, so I wanted to check and she what age you thought was appropriate? She would rather not be alone- (but she really doesnt like to do anything alone) Any suggestions or tips are appreciated. Sorry for the rambling- Thanks!

Hi, I have 8 kids (ages 14 mo. to 18) and none of them wanted to take showers until they were 8 or 9. They did take the baths by themselves by 7 although sometimes they had to go back and wash some more :-) (the boys). From experience, you are probably better off having her take her bath after dinner. May be you can transition and have her call you when she's ready to come out so you can help her dry off or bring her pajamas to the bathroom... just a few ideas. Seems like whenever I plan too many things near bed time, the bed time ends up being much later than planned! Good luck! ;-)

I have a 6 year old daughter and she bathes alone, with minimal help to make sure all the shampoo is out.

My oldest (8 now) started around 6. Of course I ran the water, helped him out of the tub, etc. He just a few times ago started doing everything himself.

Some suggestions, get a shower curtain that is mainly clear vinyl with decos to match your child's bathroom (we have sports balls on ours). It makes it easy to check on your child and she might not feel as alone being able to see out. Leave the door open too. If your daughter takes her shower/bath while you put the little one down you could reward her by reading a story while she's still in the tub.

My son started showering by himself when he was 6. We still had to wash his hair for him though until he was about 7. My daughter on the other hand...She is 6 and bathes for the most part by her self. I make sure she washes throughly and I wash her hair for her. We have to get the water going for her, but she can adjust the temperature and turn it off herself. I think she would be much more independant if she were not afraid of the shower.

My daughter was taking baths and washing herself at 4, but we had to be in the room with her of course. She stopped needing us to be in the room with her at age 6, but she still wanted us close by, like in the next room, or she said she was scared. She actually started showering by herself at age 6 but because she's always had very long curly hair until about a month ago, we were still washing her hair for her. We've since gotten it cut to shoulder length just so she can learn to wash, condition and rinse it on her own. She's been doing fine with it since we cut it so now she's completely on her own as far as bathing goes. She just turned 8. :-)

Both my 4 and 5 year old bathe alone now. I have to help my daughter (the 4 yr old) with rinsing her hair out and I still stay in the bathroom with her just to supervise. My son can do it all on his own but we do make him leave the bathroom door open and I check up on him frequently.

With my five year old daughter, I wash her hair (it is very long) at the beginning of her bath and then she finishes up herself. She likes to take long baths, so I use the time to take care of my 4 month old. But, I do stay within earshot and check in frequently.

my daughter is 6 and showers herself independently.. sometimes my 3 year old son joins her and she showers him, too. very convenient and she feels all grown up!
