When Should/can I Start Potty Training?

I have a 16 month old daughter and was wondering when I should start potty training. She tends to get diaper rash rather easily and so I was wondering if I could start her and maybe that'd help, but I don't even know the signs of when she's ready to start training. Any advice?

What can I do next?

I was lucky enough that my daughter potty trained early 15 mo. She developed a rash that would not go away. It was an allergic reaction to the diapers. I switched to cloth and put up with that for a few months. I believe this taught her what "wet" is. She then potty trained quite easily. I do suggest that you do try teaching her what "uncomfortably wet" is. Good Luck!

I have been putting my daughter on the potty chair since she was 14 months old. She is now 20 months and loves to go! I would start by putting her on when she would wake up in the morning and after naps. I slowly worked up to several times a day. She loves to go now, but still won't tell us before she has to. I think if your daughter shows any interest in the potty chair now is the right time! My daughter absolutely loves Elmo, so we bought the Elmo goes potty dvd. That is really helping too. Good Luck to you. If you have any questions for me, just let me know!

The pampers and Huggies websites offer information about potty training, including what the indicators that they are ready for it are.
Good Luck!

I have three children and have learned that most moms let there children potty train them. Never rush your child He/She will do this on there own. If you are putting your child on the potty every time YOU think they should go, how is your child learning the conection from the bladder to the brain if you know what I mean. Children need to learn the feeling of when they need to go. I would always have the potty there for them and when you go bring them with you. Show them how it is done. I think it is a great idea to do this before bath and after nap. They will get the hang of it. One day you will be so happy cause you will see your little one doing it all on his/hers own. Good luck

I bought my 18 month old daughter a potty chair at Christmas time and she sits on it when I do and before bath, sometimes she goes in there on her own, she doesn't take her pants down, just sits on it, gets up and claps...(lol) I am ready to potty train her. She takes her diaper off on her own and knows when she goes pee pee in the diaper... SO if your daughter does the same things, I would start potty training her, no harm in trying. I was potty trained by 18 months but of course that was way back in the day. So good luck!!

don't push her. but you can start introducing potty time to her.

My son is 2 1/2 and we sit him on the potty every morning and then let him go nakey bum for a little while. Helps prevent rashes to let the bum air out a couple of hours a day. We use about 1/2 cloth trainers/diapers and 1/2 sposies too. If we are just going to be home all day he's in cloth if we're going out or at nap/bedtime we use disposables. he knows what wet feels like and he will often take off his pants and diaper when they are wet, or when he feels the urge to pee then we run him to the bathroom sometimes we catch it sometimes we don't make it it's all a learning process :-)
