When to Conceive Again After Miscarriage

I had a miscarriage last week and it is still going on as it happened naturally for me. I am going back to the doctor next Monday to see if everything had passed on its own or I will need a D&C which I am trying to avoid.

My husband and I plan on trying right after I stop bleeding. I've read alot of posts on here about miscarriage and some people wait three months and some started trying right away without waiting for their cycle to come back. Some say there is a bigger chance of another miscarriage if you try right away without waiting for at least a month. I just wanted to know if that is true?

What can I do next?

I miscarried at nearly 5 months and did not have a D&C. We didn't necessarily try again but we did get pregnant within 2 months of the miscarriage and it was completely successful. My doc did tell me that I did not have to wait if I did not want to. He did not indicate that there were any greater risks of another miscarriage but he did say that statistics show that it is typically pretty quick after a miscarriage that women get pregnant again.

I wouldn't over-think it, if it is meant to be it is meant to be. I would just go for it when you are done healing from this one.

Good luck to you, I know how painful it is to go through it.

Well I'm not sure what is the right answer but for me because I didn't have a D&C my dr. said I didn't have to wait at all. But he just said it might take at least one cycle or so to get pregnant again although once you do get pregnant you have a much less chance of having another miscarriage. It has something to do with already having the pregnancy hormones in your body that helps with the next pregnancy. So i didn't wait at all and got pregnant two weeks after my miscarriage. I am 20 weeks now and everything is good. But I am truly sorry for you loss. I know how you feel. so sorry.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My best friend miscarried at 5 weeks and was told to wait two cycles. She didn't, got pregnant right away with twins, and she had a wonderful pregnancy. I miscarried at 4 months and had to deliver the baby and my ob told me I could try again as soon as I wanted. We waited three months anyway and I'm 20 weeks along now.

I just miscarried a little over a month ago and my doctor told me that it seems to be quite the contraversial how long a woman should wait. Some doctors believe 3 months, others don't think there is a problem with getting pregnant right away. My doctor told me I should wait until I get my first period after the miscarriage. I didn't have to have a D&C, everything worked out on it's own, but I'm still waiting for the period!

I'm very sorry for your loss! My Dr told me to wait two full cycles before trying again but I did have to have a D&C. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I actually wasn't ready to start trying again. I waited a year until I got pregnant again. Good luck to you!

I have heard that it is easiest to conceive right away, in that first month. But, some doctors/midwives like you to wait so that you have a better idea about dates. I don't think that is a good excuse to wait. It is more for convenience. Also, I read that sometimes your first cycle can be messed up, so you might have an emotional turmoil if you don't wait for your first cycle (you might be a couple of weeks late, you might bleed a little, your hormone levels might still be elevated making you think you are pregnant when you aren't, etc.) . For me (I just miscarried also, and haven't had my first period since then), we don't prevent pregnancies. So, we will just see what happens. I don't know anyone who miscarried when they got pregnant in the first month after a miscarriage, so I don't really have any data one way or the other. I'll just have to wait and see what happens, I guess. Sorry about your miscarriage. It seems like a lot of people have just lost babies.

My issue was this: I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks on May 31. I got pregnant again 2 weeks later and then miscarried again at 6 weeks on July 11. My doc ran some blood tests and came up with that I had cytomegolovirus. He's a fertility specialist and said that although a ton of us carry this virus and never know it, or have effects from it, some do. He thinks I got a case of it (recurring) and that's why I miscarried. He told me wait another 6 months to try again to build up antibodies for the virus. We just decided that for now we're done. We want #3, but not right now. Losing 3 kids (my nephew died) in one year is too much.
I am so sorry for your loss! I know how hard it is. I've lost 3 of my own kids now. Talk to your doc and have him see if he can't try to figure out what happened.

My Doctor told me 3 months.
Your body has to heal... not it just being about when you stop bleeding.
Your Doc should have explained to you...

I miscarried also back in 2008 on halloween at 11 weeks. I didnt need a D&C so weekly I had to get my levels checked until I was down to 0 - that took about a month (thru November). I was pregnant again in January 2009 and had a normal pregnancy and have a happy healthy 14 month old! So that was really only 2 months in between - I only had one normal cycle after it. If I recall I believe my doctors said to wait for two normal periods. Good luck - hard not to stress but try to stay positive.
