Where Do You "Thirty Somethings" Shop for Age Appropirate Clothes?

Hello Ladies,
I am 34 and I was curious to find out where other women my age shop for their clothes. I have a home daycare so it's easy for me to get in a rut and dress more on the frump side. Also, I lost some weight and I do feel more confident and would be open to trying on clothes I normally wouldn't. One of my biggest challenges are pants. I am alittle on the short side so most of what I have to buy are petites. I find that in some of the stores I shop that the petite section has clothes that I feel tend to be too mature for me. What stores or brand of clothes do you suggest? I also love to shop online. Thank you for your input.

What can I do next?

I love Ann Taylor Loft- one of the few places that I can find pants! I have a hard time at Gap and Old Navy b/c of my work environment (need suits mostly), but they have a good petite line through J Crew (online).

Talbots is really pricey, but great for "classic" pieces!

I still do a bunch of shopping at Old Navy. I'm cheap though, that is why!!

I will go to TJ Maxx or Marshals too.

If I were willing to spend the money, I would shop at Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic & Macy's.

I've actually found some great items at Dress Barn. I have a friend who is petite and also shops there with lots of luck for work clothes.

Oh man....I'm looking at this list, saving it for my reference for post-baby....because I'm a thirty-something too. How did THAT happen? :)

Great topic!

I'm 33, (also 5'2") and I think it's less about the store, and more about finding clothes that fit properly and flatter your body.

Since you asked, my stores have a big range:
Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, Mango, TopShop, The Limited, Ann Taylor (and Loft)

Tailor what you need to. Few things fit well off the rack! And the basic rule, looser clothes make you look smaller and are more flattering (not too big, just a nice comfortable loose fit. If it's pulling anywhere, it'll make you look heavier.)

For online, I LOVE the discount sites. You get a lot of different selections and designer clothes at great discounts.
www.ideeli.com
www.ruelala.com
www.hautelook.com
www.gilt.com
You have to join the site (no charge), but there are some great finds. Especially for designer jeans!

For nicer/dressier stuff or casual wear (ie jeans, shirts) - Ann Taylor Loft, The Limited, Macy's, White House Black Market, Von Maur and ocassionally I can find something at New York and Company. I can find everything from jeans to suits to sweaters and shirts at the stores above. I shop online from almost everyone regularly.

For everyday/casual lounge wear and workout - I like Old Navy and Gap.

Oh...woe is you.
Just kidding.
I am 40 something and have the worst time finding pants.
I am very small so most of the pants I find to fit me are in the juniors department and WAY too low cut for my taste.

The stuff that fits me is cut for teenagers. I don't feel comfortable in it.

I hope no one is offended, but I got a Victoria's Secret catalog by accident and they have amazing clothes. Beautiful jeans and sweaters....dresses.
They have stuff on sale all the time and I am going to try some of their pants since I can't find anything locally.
The low slung pants...not for me. But they have high rise.
Check out some catalogs.
I know someone who only buys her stuff from a home shopping network because it fits perfectly every single time.
Once you fiind what works, it makes it easier, for sure.

Best wishes.

Gosh, I shop wherever I can find clothes I like and fit right. I am pretty small as well 5"2, so I always have to get my pants altered unless they are petite. I shop everywhere, Kohls, Target, JCPenney, Macy's, Old Navy. I have even started shopping online at Old Navy and you can find a lot of stuff that is not in the stores and would probably be perfect for your job, since a lot of stuff is more casual but still cute. Certain things in the Juniors are ok, t-shirts, tank tops, but some of it is a little too "young."

I LOVE Anthropologie! Look out for their sales items. Awesome discounts! I also love Banana Republic. Someone said 7s Dojo jeans--ditto. I also love the Amber jeans by Citizens. Another ditto for www.hautelook.com suggestion. Be careful, it's addictive. I LOVE Nordstrom (don't let it's stereotype fool you. Not everything is expensive there.)

Those are my go-to's! Have fun and congratulations on the weight loss! Go celebrate it with some fabulous new clothes!!

I'm 32. I am a die-hard made in USA jean purchaser. I am only 5' and I wear size 8/10 (30" waist). I shop online for Lucky Brand jeans. Sometimes, I can find things through Buckle.com or at the Buckle store. The wonderful thing about both of those websites, it tells you where they're made, what the cut of the waist is, length in inches, and the style (boot cut, relaxed fit, skinny, straight, etc).

The last pair I bought online fit PERFECT because I know what size, cut, and style I'm looking for. The 'Made in USA' Lucky Brand jeans don't waiver with their fit.

My personal jeans that I LOVE are a size 10, bootcut, mid-rise, short length (which is 29"). Buckle also will hem for free if you purchase in the store.

If I decide I like a style in an 8, I have to go relaxed fit because of my butt and thighs.

Let me know if you want any more info!

Not sure if it is a Southern thing but I love BELK. They have great names brands and styles appropriate for our age (I'm 34 also). They have great sales and are a step above Kohls in style (but not price if you follow the sales.) If you have a credit card with them at the 2nd level they will do alterations for free.

I also have short legs and have to purchase 'shorts/petite' in my jeans. Express carries them and they're good quality but they're on the expensive side. Sometimes you can get a BOGO deal though. Levi's has short in their jeans and I know they carry them in the junior section at Kohls, but u could chk anywhere that carries Levi. Penney's has petites in the Misses section that are good too. NY & Co but those are sometimes more mature like you said. Oh and Aeropostale has them. Idk what size you are but chk out those depts/stores anyways. Good luck

I didn't read all your responses, but if no one mentioned Ann Taylor Loft, they have a great petite section. Nearly everything in their regular section is in their petite section, unlike some other stores where petite= granny clothes. Plus, their clothes are hip & age appropriate.

I love Target & Old Navy. At 4'9" most petite are too long for me. I am so happy my mother taught me how to hem my own pants, even so, it can be annoying to have to do everytime. Your local drycleaners usually do very low cost alterations. It's a treat I give my self, and then if I find a good deal on clearance and they are way too long, the cost evens out in the end.

The Buckle is my favorite, esp for pants/jeans. I have the opposite problem as I am 6 foot tall... but the Buckle's sizing for all of their pants are like mens sizing... waist and length measurement... and they have a very wide selection of sizing like this.... novel idea huh? I never could understand why more womens sizing wasn't done in this way!lol A size 8 can vary like crazy.... but a 33 waist and 33 inch inseam doesn't! AND... they do free alterations too. And yes, I'm a 30 something... lol

I love JC Penny. I know that sounds weird because you think of them as a frumpy store. But they really have come a long way. First of all, they have a great selection for my age...I'm 36. Second, good prices. Third, I love that they have a rewards program and they send text coupons out to you. Plus, when you do purchase anything...on the back of the ticket is a code to go online and take a survey that takes about 7-10 minutes tops. After that, you can print out your 15% coupon. Plus they are starting to add Sephora's in their stores as well. :)

I love to shop at H&M, it has stylish clothes with affordable prices. Their pants are typically too short for me, I am 5' 9", so it would probably be good for you. You can also get suits there for really great prices. I find that the quality of their clothes are better than similar priced stores. They do sometimes have some really funky stuff but the basics are great too. I don't like to spend a fortune on things that are really trendy but with H&M I can get a few pieces to make my style more up to date without breaking the bank. They have a large store at Lakeside, a smaller one at Partridge Creek and another one at Great Lakes Crossing.

Ann Taylor Loft -- and they have a stylish Petites section. Right now I am in maternity clothes for the 3rd time in 4 years but when I am not, Ann Taylor Loft is my go-to....Filene's Basement is my 2nd choice; then Marshall's; then Macy's.

I also like Old Navy for everyday wear.

I like The Limited and I'm a stay at home mom so I understand the rut. I'm short as well and they will tailor any of their pants for free. I only go in when I have a coupon, but they send them out often. I also just bought Express jeans but they are bit large in the waist. I shop at Macy's too but not for jeans :)

I'm also petite and 30, I refuse to wear petitie jeans though, the cuts are always so unflattering!

I would rather roll my pants or have them altered or shop for a year. I find short length jeans that are really cute (in the juniors) section at Kohls and Jc Penny's.

I also like Gap, Abercrombie, Urban Outfitters, Ross, Marshals, Old Navy...

Kohl's for casual and Von Maur for dressy. For very casual Old Navy and TJ Maxx. I've also had luck at Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft. Online is great too if you know where to shop. I still buy my jeans at Von Maur and Nordstrom's on sale because I found them to fit nicely....Not trashy but not like mama jeans either..... Sales at Von Maur are amazing if you time it right especially with their 2nd and final markdowns. Trendy but also classic pieces

Kohl's and Ross. I've always had luck finding youthful styles that are flattering but age appropriate. By age appropriate, I mean tops that cover enough of my chest and skirts long enough to show leg but I don't look like a teenager or old lady.

BTW: You can shop from Kohl's online, too.
