You are more at the rolling over stage and not even late for that. Sitting up starts more like 6 months. I think you are fine. Enjoy this time of holding and cuddling. You will be chasing this baby soon enough!

I'm a mom of a son 18, 2 daughter 16, 10. Each one of my kids rolled over, sat up, walked at different times. He will just decide one day that it's time to roll over and there will be no stopping him after that. He will probably do it when you aren't looking. They like to do that to us. So just be patient.

Hi L.! I was the same way. I have an 8 month old son and a 3 year old daughter. My son started rolling over between 3 and 4 months and started officially sitting on his own just recently - in his 7th month. You still have plenty of time before your baby can do those things. A good website I found is www.babycenter.com. It sends you e-mails about generally want to look for that your baby should be doing week by week and it has tons of questions/advice.

If you don't have the book, "What to expect the first year" I would get that. It tells you what they should or may be doing when. It'll still tell you though that every baby developes differently. It's interesting reading. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about with your baby. Don't stress too much. If you have questions about his developement, ask his doctor. I'm sure you'll find that your baby's right on target

Hi L.,

Please don't worry about how fast your baby does things. Every child is different and they will advance at their own pace. My best freind and I had our babies at the same time. Mine got his first tooth at 5 months; hers at 9 months. Mine started walking at 9 months; her son is still not walking at 14 months. Her child is perfectly healthy. If you're concerned about your baby sitting up or rolling over, you should try "tummy time". This is when you have play time with your baby on his tummy. This helps then gain strength in their neck and back muscles. As long as he is healthy, don't panic about him sitting up or rolling over. Keep me posted.

At 3 months there's not a whole lot your baby can do. His back muscles aren't built up enough to sit up so he will not even try it. Try again when he's about 5 months and buy a boppy pillow if you don't have one already. They're really a life saver! Give him some tummy time though so he will be more apt to crawl when he is supposed to in a few months. At around 4 months he will begin to rollover and become more curious. I have a 5 month old daughter and she is curious about everything. Let him touch things, look at things, and get into things sometimes. Just keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get hurt. My daughter went from being quiet and just laying around playing to squealing and rolling everywhere within just a few weeks. It just takes time and all babies are different! hope this helps!!

Hi L.,
I wouldn't worry about your little boy. He will be fine. I am a mother of 6 and grandmother of 8 and I have also been a childcare provider for about 25 years now. Each child is an individual and learn at their own pace. I have had children that have sat up at 4 months and some that havent sat up until they were close to 10 months old. My daughter wasn't able to sit up by herself until she was about 9 months old. I was told that she was developmentally delayed would probably have problems learning to crawl and walk but she didn't, she was crawling about a month later and then was walking shortly after and is fine at everything she does. Hang in there kiddo. He will be rolling over and sitting up before you know it. Time will pass way to quick. :-)

First off, Take a deep breath...HES FINE!! I'm a fulltime mom of an 11 yr old, 9 yr old, and 6 yr old.

Three months is still pretty tiny. Dont force him to sit...Usually they start around 5 months or so. My daughter rolled over when she was 3 months..and my sons were almost 4. Every baby does things on their own time line. My daughter walked at 9 months, while my sons were around 16 months.

Enjoy your son cuddle with him, play with him, rock and read to him. Please dont think there is something wrong with him cause hes not sitting up yet,hes still very much an infant.

Hold him close, and enjoy these moments. They will be gone before you know it.

Don't worry! At 3 months they still don't do a whole lot. Every baby is different so don't push him on anything yet. He shouldn't be sitting up untill 5-6 months. As far as the rolling over he will do it when he is ready. Don't stress over stuff like that. My daughter didn't roll over until almost 4 months but sat up at 5. My friends little girl didn't rollover untill almost 5 months, sat at 6 and walked at 9...so just enjoy your baby boy and love and kiss on him and everything will be fine. Good luck and keep us posted when he does start to do all that stuff!

You should get the book _What_to_Expect_The_First_Year. It tells you lots about what your baby should be doing and what you can expect. At three months he shouldn't be sitting or rolling over. He can't control his back or neck muscles well enough.

I am not sure of the exact time my daughter, 21 mths now, sat up or rolled over. I do remember it was late. She rolled, sat up and crawled late but then she was walking at 11 months.

Is everything else in line or close? Have you mentioned it to your peditrician? Next time you go, mention it to him and I am sure he is fine. I was worried too and now my daughter is ahead of some of the kids her age when it comes to physical development.

I think as a mom it is important to be tuned in to our little ones but at the same time remember that each and every one of them are special and different.

It is worth asking the doc about it though.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Every baby develops at different times. So when you see a baby that is his age and doing more things, don't worry about it. My boys were completely different. My oldest roled over at 4 months old and my second son didn't roll over until he was almost 5 months old. My nephew is 6 months old and he is just now rolling over, probably cause he is so fat, but oh well. Neither one of my boys walked until they were almost 15 months old and when my friend's baby started walking at 10 months old and other babies were walking before they were 1 year old, it bothered me and I asked the doctor and he said not to worry that they all do things when they are ready. So I wouldn't really worry if I was you. Have fun with the new baby boy they are wonderful.

Hi L. Im C. alsi 25. I was 23 when I had Isabella 5-30-05. She is my heart and soul. Let me tell you what Ive learned about development. ALL babies develope at their own pace. They are all different. My daughter did not roll until she was 41/2 months and that was from belly to back. She didnt sit up without support until she was 71/2 months. Crawled on hands and knees at 1 year. She rolled and scooted to where she wanted to go and her pediatrician said it was just fine. She didnt start walking with out help until 15 months old. She took her steps and all but without help at 15 months. She is smart as can be. She says Moma, DaDa, Sissy, Dog, Go, You Get, Cracker, Cookie, Pizza, Kim (her sitter) Jordan (big sister) speedy(our doberman) Tooty (our pitbuull) Cup, Mamaw, Papaw, Boo, Waves, Blows kisses and more and only 18 months old. I have a ili sister whos boy is almost a year and already taking steps. So you see L. its ok your little one isnt sitting or rolling yet. Even though min was later doing things shes not slow or anything. But it is always a good idea to watch and keep up with their development. If you eventually get really concerned always ask his doctor or any of us moms. Were happy to help

Just enjoy him :) It's hard to stop comparing your child to everyone else's but all that will do is bring on more worry and concern than it's worth! Every child develops at their own pace and unless he isn't doing something within a certain range (like not rolling over after he is 6 months old) then consult your pediatrician.

Babies roll over for the first time anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months old. Babies sit up between 3-7 months old.

A good resource is "What to expect the first year" and "What to expect the toddler years." You can find them at any bookstore, Walmart or Target or online. They give you developmental milestones for every month of your baby's first 3 years. They are also a good medical resource.

Your pediatrician will also ask you basic developmental questions at the well check to make sure that your baby is progressing.

Can I just give you a word of caution? It is great that you are working with your baby. I am on baby #4 and have learned that our society is obsessed with developmental milestones and you will find a lot of mothers out there who try to value their worth as a mother (and everyone else's) on how fast their child learns to do things.

Every baby is born with an internal clock. You can't change it by more than a small degree. Yes, there are babies born in Romanian orphanages who don't walk until age 2-3 because they never leave the crib, but that is extreme. My college professer was one of the first allowed into the country to work with them. He also did extensive studies with identical twins (healthy, happy ones in the US) to see if one twin would reach milestones faster because the parents' constantly worked with them.

The result was that the parents' coaching had no real significant affect. The twin who was left to learn to do something on his / her own kept up with the twin who was constantly being worked with. Your baby is going to do just fine.

Congratulations on your new little one,
S.

This website has a list of the things to expect your child to be doing at certain ages. It shows them rolling over at 4 months of age. I think you should look at it and if you have any questions about some on the list write it down and the next time you take your baby to the doctor talk to him or her about your concerns. Good luck.

I totally understand where you are coming from. My boy is almost 14 months old right now, but when he was a newborn I was completelyfreaked out about when he would reach his milestones. The book "What to expect the first year" is great. My son ended up rolling over consistently between 3-4 months. He sat shortly before 7 months. Crawled at 8 months and he started cruising furniture the same day he crawled. He walked at 10 months. On the other hand he doesn't say any words. When I was a baby I was the exact opposite. It took me forever to reach motor milestones, but I was saying words at 8 months. My point is every baby is different and there really is a large range to what is "normal". Give your baby lots of tummy time and he will be rolling before you know it.

Hi L.
I'm pretty clueless on this mom gig too, but your baby seems to be right on track. You don't need to worry about sitting until about 7 months anyway-my son is 5 months and starting to do it pretty well now. Right now, tummy time is the number one thing for you to be working on. A great book to have on hand that shows what sort of things each age group should be a ble to do and when to be concerned is "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child" by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its been a lifesaver to my husband and I in figuring out what our little guy is doing. Check it out-I'm sure it will ease your concerns a great deal. Good luck to you

Babies develop at different rates. You may see other babies the same age doing something that your baby isn't doing yet, but don't worry about it. Then again you may see your baby doing something that other babies his age aren't doing yet.
My baby rolled over around 4 months, started crawling around 5 months, and just recently started sitting up at 9 months.
Every milestone is wonderful. Try not to stress out or worry too much, just enjoy every minute and offer your baby lots of encouragement.
Congratulations on your new baby!

Hi L.,

Don't worry! He sounds totally normal. My daughter started rolling over at about 5 months and is now 8 months and just starting to be able to sit unassisted, balance herself with her arms, etc. Our doctor says she is right on schedule.

Every time I've started getting worried that she's not doing something she "should be doing" at her age, she invariably starts doing it all the time about a week or two later--I worried about her rolling over and now that's all she wants to do and she's working on crawling.

I recommend The Baby Book by Dr. Sears, it's a good basic "baby manual" for the first two years. Also the Tiny Love Gymini mat is a great toy for babies 0-9 months--my daughter loved hers, it really helped her develop her rolling and grabbing and she is only just now starting to lose interest in it (now she crawls off it in search of adventures...). Here is a link--you can get it at Babies R Us.

http://www.tinylove.com/toy.aspx?toyId=32

Have fun--and enjoy the fact that for now he stays put, pretty soon you will be chasing him all over the place!

Good luck--

C.
