Ive been intrigued with Yoga for a long time now and have decided now is the time to start. Im starting to go to the gym and want to add Yoga not just to feel better physically, but mentally as well. I need some advice on Yoga mats. I've been looking online and it seems like everyone you look at, unless you pay over $100, is slippery uncertain poses. I'm looking for something thick enough but doesn't cause me to slip too much. I'm about 5' 6 and about 200 lbs so I need something comfortable and it needs to stand up to use and don't want to spend an outrageous amount right now. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I've done yoga since I was 16 (my Mom took me to classes in high school). I'm now 39, and just bought a new mat at Target - just go buy the thickest one they have. It'll cost you about $25 - maybe they'll be on sale over the holidays.

I usually bring a hand towel with me to class, if I use it on top of my mat, it helps me not slide in some of the poses.

Go over to Dicks Sporting Goods and ask for the yoga section. I bought their $30 one that includes a handle of a sort that is velcroed to the ends (you take it off when you want to unroll the mat.). My mat doesn't slip and its not too thin and not too thick.

There's no reason to pay $100 for a mat.

Good luck with yoga!

I have done yoga for 18 years. I got my mat at Target and it's perfectly fine. I think it was $19.99 but it is hard to remember. It has not been slippery for me ever. The thin yoga mats are all 1/8 inch thick. The thicker and more expensive yoga mats are all 1/4 inch thick. You pay more for a more eco-friendly material like natural rubber. Just google 1/4" yoga mat and look for one that is not too expensive. I think they start at $40 to $50.

I have very sweaty hands and feet, so I just lay a towel over my mat. I used to slide all over the place, and now I don't have any problems!

I did yoga for a few years (before kids) and loved it. I just bought a mat at Target, I think? It was definitely less than $20. Never had any problems slipping. I've see the same mat at T. J. Max and Barns and Noble. I think you'd be just fine with one of those mats.

I got my mat at Target years ago, and just recently bought a new from Target. Get the one that is the thickest. It'll be fine.

And have fun! I love doing yoga. I find it so relaxing and the stretching is great!
