Character Development

Dallas, TX

When I ask my teenagers what they did all day they say, "nothing." When I ask them what they like to do, they say "nothing". When I ask them what they want to do or be, they have no answer. I know they are not just avoiding the questions they really truely do not know. I want to know how to figure out what they might like and or be good at and encourage them to do it so they will develop an interest or hobby or something so that they will be able to carry on a conversation with an adult. Am I crazy? R. L

Children's Playground at Ramstein

Stationed Overseas, AE

Hi! Maybe I have just completely missed them...but I was wondering if there are any outside playgrounds at Ramstein? I have seen some at Vogelweh, but can't recall seeing them at Ramstein. When we are doing errands there, it would be nice to stop and have lunch if the weather is sunny!

Independent Play

Los Angeles, CA

Hi, my little girl does not do independent play, she hardly sits at all, she is busy walking around aimlessly, she plays with clothes and towels or she wants my attention(I do give) and we take her outside every day for a few hrs., we just went and bought her 2 new toys. My question is what toys hold your child's interest and do they sit and play by themselves at this age? We have a dollhouse, but no dolls or toys to go with it, I'm looking for some;maybe she will play with it when I do???

Juggling Activities and Practices. Scheduling Helps?

San Francisco, CA

Hi! I am a mom of 5 children. I have an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old and 6-year-old triplets. They are healthy and happy kids and I'm grateful. I've always prided myself on not overscheduling my kids - I want them to have time to hang out, play games, read with me, etc. But now that they're all elementary age, I'm struggling with this. I want to expose them to sports and music and I think it's important. But even with scouts, sports and music for each of my children, I end up with sometimes 15 things during the week. With homework on top of these activities, there is little down time or time for play dates or just plain sitting down and talking! Has anyone felt this same balancing act problem? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Jen G.

Looking for a Playgroup

Los Angeles, CA

I'm looking for a free playgroup with like-minded parents. I live in the Venice/Marina Del Rey/Santa Monica area. I'd like to find a playgroup with moms who breastfeed, co-sleep or who don't and won't scold me for doing so,and don't have full-time nannies with them. I'm a second time mom with an 8 month old daughter and an 8 year old son. I'd like to help my baby make some baby friends.

Seeking Mom and Toddler Classes in Kennesaw/Marietta Area

Atlanta, GA

I'm currently enrolled in the Gymboree music and movement classes and we love it. However the tuition is a bit more than my current budget can handle. I was wondering what other classes are available around the West Cobb area that might be free or significantly less in cost. We take full advantage of the local parks when the weather is nice, but I would like to also be involved in a teacher directed class. Any advice will help. Thanks!

Something to Do for Senior Citizens Who Don't Have a Lot of Money

Chicago, IL

Dear Mama's, Help, I am looking for some activities to get my mother out of the house. She does daycare and loves it. but needs a life outside of daycare. My dad has been dead for 14 years and she never goes or does anything that is not connected with either daycare or reading. But she needs to get out more. She sometimes sounds so sad and has nothing to do. I tell her I am going to play cards or going bowling and she is not interested in that (she doesn't think my friends would want an "old" lady with them) what a joke she is only 17 years older than I am. Some of the ladies I play with are older than she is. but if anyone has any ideas please send them my way. Classes at the park district? at the Y? I don't have books for those but if anyone has any ideas of things their own parents do that might be a hit please I need help. She is 66 so mountain climbing etc is definitly a no go. thanks so much sherry

Thomas the Train in Lakeville This Weekend

Minneapolis, MN

Have any of you gone to this? I know it was going on last weekend as well. My husband and I are wondering if it's something our 2-year-old would enjoy. He loves trains, and does love Thomas, I just wonder if the event is all that it's cracked up to be. Is it really a Thomas-looking train? Is the 25 minn. ride exciting or would it quickly bore a 2 year old? Are the other activities enough to justify the drive down there and the $20 per person ticket cost? Would love any advice you can share!

V-tech Vsmile or Leapster???

Chicago, IL

Hi moms, I was thinking of possibly getting my daughter one of those educational game systems either this year or next (she will be 3 in October). But not sure which one is "better" or the pros and cons of either one of them. I have seen the V-Tech & to me it has lousy picture quality, but that's all I know about it. So, would like to know some opinions on the 2 systems & if your child happens to have both systems...which one do you and your child prefer? Thanks!

Where Can I Take My 2 Year Old to Ride Ponies/horses?

Dallas, TX

My two year old is CRAZY about horses/ponies. She tells us multiple times, each day that she wants to ride a horse. She rides on ponies at church events, neighborhood events, and birthday parties but those are only 3-4 times a year. Where can I take my daughter to ride (just for fun, not riding lessons or anything)? I hear they have pony rides at the Dallas Zoo--any opinions?

Will a Play Kitchen Help Prevent Real Kitchen Mischef

San Francisco, CA

I'm thinking of getting a play kitchen for my boy. It's really expensive though and hard to get second hand ones because they are in high demand. It would be worth it though if it would help cut down on his kitchen escapades. At almost 2 yrs old and climbing he has been able to climb on chairs, push them, climb on boxes to get to the stove and counters. I can't keep a strict watch on him because I'm tending to my 4 month old. So at times, I find him on the dining room table or reaching for pans on the stove. If a play kitchen has helped your boy leave your kitchen alone, please let me know. If it has not helped at all, please let me know also. Any other suggestions for discipline or deterents would be helpful too. thanks!

Work from Home, School's Out, HELP!!

Chicago, IL

I have 2 boys, 5 and 2, who are VERY, VERY, VERY energetic and LOUD. I've been working on them not yelling so much in the house, but they just bounce off the walls around here most of the time, inside and outside. I work from home doing troubleshooting for my company's clients and I am on the phone a lot. Before I would wait until one went to school and the other was napping, but will not have that luxury anymore of "quiet time" to talk on the phone with customers. I cannot have them playing outside constantly during the day, unfortunately, due to my job (can't watch them) and I can't afford to lose my job due to the noise in the background constantly around here...... so my question is........ does anybody have any ideas for keeping the kids quiet and entertained, BESIDES TV, for this summer??? Or possibly have any other suggestions?
