Acting Up

Los Angeles, CA

I have twins that are almost 19months, One is "normal" for the lack of better words and the other very behind due to severe prematurity. For the most part they get along and the Reed trys to interact with Ryan but latley he has been getting really arrgesive towards him and others. It dosent look like hes tring to hurt him. Ryan has been having to see alot of Doc's and therapy, having more attention placed on him this past month. We try our best to treat them equally but its like having a 19month and a 9-10month old. Do you think Reeds feelng left out or the stress in the house hold? We are getting more concerned dut to the fact Ryan will be having 2+ surgeries in the next few months. I dont want him to feel like he's not important. We are curently doing big boy stuff with just Reed, either me or my husband take him to the park or play out side games. Anyone have any segestions or faced similar experience with children?

Advice About Unsympathetic Hubby

San Francisco, CA

I have IC, a serious medical condition in which my bladder is missing it's mucus layer and is scarred and shrunken to 1/2 it's size. I had 2 medications okayed by a pregnancy specialist before I even decided to get pregnant. I'm taking the minimum dose of 1 of them and went off the other. My husband is really against me taking anything. Last night, he came home at 10:00 (after having some beers with his friends) and started in on me about being in bed and said some really hurtful things. He said I was in a stupor, which couldn't be further from the truth. I went to bed because my back was aching. I also work full time and am exhausted after I get home. He also really crossed the line by saying I don't care about the baby! I am so hurt!!!!!!!!!! I feel like not even answering him when he asks me when the last time I took a pill was. Anyone been through this before? It's so stressful! He's been with me to appointments with my OB, but not with my urologist for a long time. I think my OB is just barely starting to understand a little about IC.

Bedwetting?

Dallas, TX

My 4 (almost 5) year old has recently started wetting the bed every night. He has only wet the bed maybe 2 or 3 times since he was fully potty training but about a month ago was doing it maybe once a week and now it is a nightly thing. I have limited his liquid intake after 6.. make sure he potties before calling it a night. There have been no major changes in his or my life. He is going through a growth spurt so I am not sure if that has anything to do with this I have decided to set an alarm at midnight to wake me up so I can take him to the bathroom.. but does anyone have any other suggestions? Is this normal

Being Closterfobic (SP)

Hickory, NC

Is there anyone here that knows how to deal with this. I have always been this way but today I was to go and do an MRI and half way into it I freaked out so bad that they could barely get me out fast enough. I have never been this bad. Normally I could be talked to and be ok and make it through it. But not now. I suddenly seen it has gotten worse over the years. Any ideas would be great as I have to figure out a way to get passed this because I have to get this MRI done as soon as possible.

Friend's Baby's Brain Stopped Growing

Denver, CO

My friend is six weeks away from delivering her second baby girl. She received word yesterday that while the baby is growing in size and is healthy in most every way, her little brain stopped growing six weeks ago and she will be born severely retarded. They have no idea of the cause, but doctors told her and her husband that if their little girl survives birth, she won’t live more than two-three months. These results have been reviewed and confirmed by other doctors. We are all broken-hearted. Has anyone else been through this? I would love to be able to find some sort of resource or encouragement to pass on. They don't really know how to even begin coping with this news. Thanks.

Need Help Dealing with 4-Yr-old Perfectionist

Houston, TX

Hi, I need a little advice in dealing with my 4-yr-old son. Most of the time his behavior is quite good. However, if he makes mistakes (colors out of the lines, tears his paper, etc.) he has "meltdowns". It would be easy to just step in and fix the problems but I won't be there holding his hand in August when he begins Kindergarten, so I am trying to help him learn to solve his problems himself. In the past, when he's calm enough, we've talked through the problem and I've tried to get him to come up with his own solutions. After three+ years of this, the meltdowns occur just as frequently and just as dramatically now as they always have. Other people see him react to his mistakes and think that I should punish him, but he hasn't been mean or done anything wrong, (other than reacting inappropriately to a mistake he's made) so I don't necessarily think that he should be punished. Has anybody had any success with dealing with children who are perfectionists? I'm afraid that he is going to end up in trouble this fall if his teacher can't deal with this. Help! Thank you so much! S.

Between the disrespect and the anger and the fighting I am at wits end. Dealing with all the "professionals" is one thing but when they are not there.... then what? I need someone who has been on my side of things to discuss what I am going through and to gripe with. Dealing with this has made me feel alienated and different with other moms who dont compeletly understand. Is there anyone out there who understands?

Out of Sync Child Dvd/vhs/other Audio Format?

Dallas, TX

I am reading The Out of Sync Child. I am very interested in helping my dyslexic husband find a format that he can listen to and understand the information quickly. I have not found an audio version of this book. The DVD is 86 minutes long and pretty expensive-- used VHS tapes are even MORE which is so odd to me! Does anyone have this that would be willing to lend it to me for a week or two? I promise to take good care of it! Thanks, A.

Rapid Automatized Naming

Sacramento, CA

I have taken my son for numerous evals, for his numerous "problems", noe of which are too major, most of which he is a "fall between the cracks" kids, in terms of receiving services. THe latest eval was at Sac State for Speech, his lowest score levels are in "rapid automatized naming" I still do not have a grasp on exactly what this means, but I am doing research, it was explained to me, but just trying to really grasp it. What I do know is my son will probably always be slower that other children in responding to people, at home and in school when asked questions and such. Does anyone have a child with this problem and if so can you please help me understand it a little better, I was told there are no proven therapies to help improve this problem.... thanks for any and all input.

School Suicide

Los Angeles, CA

Yesterday at Vasquez High School a 9th grade boy shot himself in the bathroom. This boy was one of my daughters pals. They were not close but the shared the same problem. Kids harass them relentlessly. Before yesterday I was thinking of taking my daughter out of school and doing Virtual Academy. I am rethinking this because it feels like I will be walking away from the problem and not helping the situation get better for all the other kids out there. How can I approach this principal and get it throughto him that this needs to stop? He is fully aware my daughter gets harassed. She sits in the office at lunch just to get away from these kids. She is torn up over this boy shooting himself. Advise would help this situation. Thank you.

Seeking Advice About Mesial Temporal Sclerosis

Salinas, CA

Hi I am a new member of this group (just joined today). My daughter was recently diagnosed with Mesial Temporal Sclerosis. Since 12/05 she has had 5 episodes of seizures. I've gone on-line and found lots of information, but what I would really like to know is: is it progressive? Does anyone know about the side-effects of anti-seizure medication? She has learning and attention problems as well. She is in a special education class. Just looking to hear from other mothers. Also, there are all these programs that I have been referred to such as California Children's Services, and something called San Andrea's Regional Center. Does anyone know about these? What exactly will they do for her/us? Anyway, thank you all for reading thusfar. My daughter is 9 years old. And thank you in advance for your help.

Seeking Teen Support Group or School in the West San Fernando Valley

Los Angeles, CA

My son is 14 years old, starting (public) high school and has been dealing with ADHD, Anxiety, Depression and Tic Disorder (Vocal)for years. He can't take ADHD meds because they make his tics worse so he struggles greatly with school and although smart, doesn't do well in class. Kids ridicule his "noises" and often taunt him with cruel comments. He doesn't socialize well. My heart aches for him having to deal with "normal" teen issues and all of this as well. Does anyone know of a good support group for teens with these types of issues? He is in public high school but I'm also considering more of a specialized school setting. His grades are poor, he hates school and isn't motivated but I suspect most of that is from dealing with cruel kids and teachers. Help!!

Speach Therapy by ECI

Dallas, TX

My 15 month old just saw her Ped. for her check up and has reccomended Speach Therapy for her since she can only say "Mama and Dada". A company called ECI was sent to our home to help determine if there is a need for Speach Therapy. They said that they will come out and check her hearing, vision and diet. We are not that worried we figure she will say "words" when she is ready. Right now she speaks jiberish and we understand her wants and needs. In fact she just said her first word last Sat. and more have followed..."Go, Baba (short for bottle/sippie cup) and Corn (short for Unicorn). Has any one used ECI for Speach Therapy? Has they been of any help to your child? What are their methods? Thanks for the help.

Special Needs Daughter

Charlottesville, VA

My 12 year old has ADHD,ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) and a speech disability. She has tantrums, cusses like a sailor, calls herself names and hits her head with her fists, on the wall. She is very defiant!! She is on Ritalin and now she is on Risperadol (a mood stabilizer). I have not wanted to put her on something like that, but it has just gotten so bad that I could not get her under control so I had to do something. I am really in need of some more advice from mothers who have gone through this or something similar. My husband and my daughter constantly go at it with each other and I feel like I am forced to choose sides and it is difficult. I can see why my husband gets upset, but I try and get him to understand that with her disabilities you can not treat her like a regular kid with no disabilities. But it doesn't do any good. So any advice on either subject would be greatly appreciated!!
