Son Having Trouble in Kindergarten

My son is so excited about being in school. He looks forwarding to going in the morning and seems happy when he comes home. He attends AM Kindergarten, KinderDay in the afternoon and then Latchkey until I pick him up after work. Having been in a very structured day care for the past 3 years, he seems to have made the transition very well - even though the changes to his schedule have been pretty big. He rarely had behavior problems in day care but the feedback from the elementary school is horrible. Every day - literally - we have...

Obsessive/compulsive/worry Type of Personality in a 6 Year Old

Hi everyone. I'd like to start by saying that my 6 year old is such a pleasant, beautiful kid. Over the past several months, we have noticed the worrying get out of hand. We have had to pull him out of activities due to his little fear of bodily injury. He was losing sleep anitipating when the next activity was going to be and would count the days. We felt it wasn't worth all that anxiety and decided to take him out and telling him (we didn't quit), but it was his choice when he will be ready....giving him control. As I have been...

My 8 Year Old Son Has a Hard Time Reading

Hi my name is Becky I have an 8 year old son. As a baby was very advance for his age. Walked at 9mo., rode a bike without training wheels before he was 3years old. Could say all of his abc's at 2 years old. When I took him to the doctor he was always ahead of his age group. When he went to preschool he test above their charts. When he hit regular school. The trouble started. He had a really hard time getting the sounds down. Then he couldn't get reading. Then spelling was very hard. When it came to math he could do it with he's eyes closed....

Helping a 1St Grader Learn Sight Words

Hi! I have a first grader who needs to memorize a list of sight words. (dolch words) They get a list and need to learn the list and then they move on to another list. I think this will continue throughout the school year. She doesn't particularly like reviewing these words so I am looking for ways to make it more fun or at least change it up. I have made a matching game, we write them on dry erase boards and in shaving cream in the tub, and we have them on a wall in our basement where we play a game to identify them. I am just looking...

7 Year Old Doesn't like to Read

My 7 year old daughter doesn't like to do her reading homework and my 5 year old is starting to pick up on it. I know I am not that big of a reader, but I keep magazines around and try to read in front of them sometimes. I have tried letting them pick their own books to reading the book to them first. Any other thoughts to get her more into reading would be great. Thanks

Would You Let Your 9 Year Old Walk Home from School?

My 9 year old son wants to walk to his friend's house after school on Friday. He would be walking with his friend & the distance is probably less than a mile. The neighborhood is good, but I'm nervous. I won't be home until around 6 because I work. My son has told me that his friend's parents think that I am too overly protective. I have a neighbor in law enforcement that mentioned that there are 5 pedaphiles (excuse the spelling) in the area. They aparently don't show up on the internet list for various reasons such as they are still...

I have an 8 year old that is very picky about food. She either wants something different from what i've made and if not, she won't eat. I can't get her to eat veggies or healthy food. It all started one day that we were at my in laws house, and she almost vomited, ever since then, she is always saying that if she tries something new she's going to throw up.
