Languages - How Many Do You Speak?

A question earlier today got me to thinking, how many people speak more than one language? Yes, reading and writing are important too. I am TRYING to learn Chinese right now. Just to speak, not read or write it. I'm getting there. Got my numbers down and pleasantries. I am learning Chinese because I pick two students up from one of our schools for a friend who is hosting them, they are Chinese. They speak English - but are enjoying "trading" learning languages. I have German, French and Spanish under my belt. I don't use them like I...

Input from Moms of Autistic Spectrum Kids About Help Wanted from Extended Family

I have a grandson on the autistic spectrum and belong to a support group for grandparents. I would love input from you mothers (and fathers) with kids on the spectrum. What are some of the problems you have with extended family? What would you like from them? I write for a Parent Coaches blog on the subject of grandparents' roles today, relationships with adult children, and such. I want to help grandparents like myself learn how to be most helpful with special needs kids, since I hear from both sides about communication difficulties, hurt...

Why Aren't You Talking?

Hi everyone. I was just wondering: my son is 16 months old and he doesn't talk. He is extremely smart...I'm not just saying that as his mother. But he doesn't talk at all. Well, he can say Mama, Dada, Ca-Ca, Cu-Cu (means his aunt Jessica), Ra-Ra (his aunt Cassandra), Ba (bath), and Bi-Bi (bites=food). Nothing else. His doctor seems to be concerned with it. I wasn't really at first because I thought, "He's only 16 months!" But all my friends' kids talked by this age. I finally took away his binkie (thanks to the advice of a friend on here...

Learning Her Abc's

I am having the biggest problem. My daughter is learning her ABC's but when she is with me its like she just wants to play around. She will not be serious. She says "i don't know" when I know she knows and she doesn't try. Or she will say "its a K" when it's a W. I lose my cool and completely want to give up on trying and leave it to her teachers, but I know that is so wrong. How can I get her to learn. Things I have tried: Flash cards, Story time, Cutting the letters out of construction paper, playing Memory Game with letters, and...

JFF Phrases That Irk You. Have Any?

You know the kind--the "pat" answers people give so freely. Along with "this too shall pass," I would say that "been there, done that" tops my list as most annoying. Do you have any phrases that drive you batty?
