Treatment of Child with Disabilities at School

Background on my daughter. She has been diagnosed with ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) , Generalized Anxiety, Tic syndrome & Sensory Issues. I've been battling with the school for a few years now on getting an IEP or 504 put in place. I'm setting up another meeting & I refuse to leave the school until one is put in place. My daughters grades are dropping in one particular subject b/c her teacher absolutley refuses to make ANY special accomidations. My main question is they are currently punishing her by taking away her...

14 Year Old Thinks Rules Too Strict - NO MORE RESPONSES PLEASE. THANKS for ALL!

My 14 year old daughter seems to think a few of my rules are too strict. So, she asked me if I’d get the opinion of other mothers – particularly those I don’t know personally – and who have daughters her age. The rules she disagree with are as followed: My daughter can only attend two outings per month. Note: This includes things like going to the movies, hanging out at the mall, birthday parties, etc. This also includes spending the night away from home. My daughter thinks she should be allowed to do more each month and...

Attitude and Self-injury

I have a 12-year-old boy whose academic performance has slowly deteriorated throughout this academic year and whose personal integrity has surfaced to insecurity. He is quite unorganized. He has a school agenda that is full of doodles rather than homework assignments. My son is not an excellent student, although I am told he could be if only he had the "right attitude", but up to now he has been passing with reasonable marks. However, this past term he has failed 4 classes. This past week at school his counselor informed me he put paint in...

13 Year Old. Ugh.

13 year old daughter. Need I say more? It's as if an alarm went off in her head the day she turned 13 telling her to start acting like a ^#&$^@#$!*. Though she doesn't have issues with school or boyfriends, the "I don't give a darn" attitude and the "Whatever" nasty attitude with all her family members is about to put me over the edge. No amount of lecturing makes a difference. She just comes back even nastier. We've taken away the phone (which she barely uses anyway), computer, her e-reader, to no effect other that making her even...

11 Year Old Daughter with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia

I have an eleven-year-old (fourth grade) daughter who was diagnosed with dyslexia in second grade. Once diagnosed, we received remediation through her school and got private educational therapy several times a week until last year. Last year we moved my daughter to a private school whose reading remediation is based upon the Barton method. We've been happy with her progress and the move. However it's still hard to watch her struggle so much. She is very bright (an honor roll student) and gets frustrated at not being able to do...

Bed Time for 10 Year Old

I am the mother of 3 healthy, active children. Recently, my husband and I have been in disagreement about what time my oldest (10 years old) should be allowed to stay up at night. I feel 8:45 for the 10 yr old is good since he must be up at 6:45am to get the bus at 7:30 am for school. I am the one who gets the kids ready for bed, reads to them, makes sure teeth are brushed, etc and my husband travels for work often so he is not home. When he is home he is usually watching TV, especially sports in the evening. But, my husband thinks the...

My 12 Year Old Being Bullied at School

My 12 year old son came home from school very emotional. He did not want to tell us what happened. He finally did tell us that he was pushed to the ground and hit by 3 boys at school. Then he told us that he didn't know who the boys were. Finally he admiditted that he did know who the boys were, but he didn't want to tell us who the were. We did get him to tell us, but now we are not sure were to take this. He was obviously afraid that we would take action and make things worse for him with these boys. Should we call the parents of these ...
