Alternatives to Shaving My Legs

Hi girls,

I prefer to shower at night, but end up taking another one in the morning just to shave my legs. I am looking for a fast, inexpensive alternative that does not involve the shower. Nair always seems to be a messy, smelly hassle and I'm not working so laser hair removal is out. And I've heard horror stories about the Epilady's, unless they have changed since their inception. Suggestions please & thank you!

What can I do next?

I have started using a men's razor like my husband's because it works SO much better than women's, think it's the Gillette Mach 3? It's amazing how much better it works.

Also, using conditioner instead of shave cream helps too (also shave gel works better than the cream, but conditioner is best). Good luck!

Waxing, it is slightly painful for some people, but you get used to it, it gets easier with time as the hair comes back finer and smoother.

I got to the Oxford Salon and Spa in Oklahoma City. They have another location in Edmond. They have this treatment called "Sugaring". It's similar to waxing but does not hurt near as badly. I even have brazilian sugaring done because it is that effective. I'm usually baby smooth for two weeks with the brazilian so I'm not sure about the legs. The first time will hurt the most and then after that it is super easy. You can check out their website for pricing/etc. www.theoxfordspasalon.com

Hmm. You could wax. There's also a sort of mitt that is sort of like very, very mild sandpaper (I hate to put sandpaper in your head, though! It's really not like that!), and when you rub it in circles, it pulls the hair out - absolutely painlessly. That is, unless you over-rub one area - that can irritate your skin. Be careful in the beginning. It doesn't have to be long hair, like waxing requires. I think it's by...Hanson? You can find it in convenience stores and some pharmacies, Wal-Mart, etc. Look in the hair removal section. I find that I need to use it every few days to be really smooth, but you could do it maybe once or twice a week, depending on your preference.

I'm sorry I can't remember the brand name. It's a small-to-medium sized box, and the mitt thing is pink. They have a little facial hair one, too.

Umm why don't you just shave when you're in the shower at night? Seems to me that it would make the most sense. I must say though that I'm impressed that you're able to get not one, but two showers a day with a 30 month old! Hope you find what you're looking for.

I have a Braun epilator that works well. Yes, it does hurt a bit, but it really hurts less the more you use it. But I have to use it the day before I need to because it takes some time for the red bumps to go away. Another alternative is the electric shaver. Mine is cordless and rechargable. I like that I can use it without needing to be in the shower and it does the job, but of course electric shavers don't give you as close of a shave as a razor blade. But your legs LOOK cleanly shaved, they just don't feel super-smooth like just-shaved with a razor legs feel. I've heard about a product called Smooth-Away (as seen on TV) which to me looks like sandpaper discs that you attach to a handle. They are supposed to be pain-free and you just rub them over your legs. I'm skeptical though. I'd like to know if it works or not. Oh yeah, I'm not a fan of waxing. I'd much rather use an epilator. Plus it requires getting in the shower to wash off the wax and residue.

My sister just used the "smooth away" pads for a recent trip to the beach. She used them for her legs, under arm, and bikini. She loves the pads and said they really worked awesome, even for a quick touch-up.

Might you consider just not shaving? It's prickly for a couple of months, but after that it's soft. I know it doesn't fit our cultural idea of feminine, but my husband still finds my legs nice and smooth even though they have hair.

Maybe you should try an electric razor. I also shower at night and then shave with an electric razor in the morning. I use a men's razor with the lift and cut blades. I found that it shaved closer then the women's razor I was using but it will pull the skin if you are not careful in soft areas like behind the knee or the upper thigh just keep the skin pulled tight when you shave and straighten your leg when shaving behind the knee. It sure makes shaving a lot easier!!!

I have a 29 month old and before her, I always HAD to have very freshly shaven legs. In college, I often shaved morning and night if I was going out. Then came Mama days! I now have more time to shower in the evening after she is in the bed or when she's spending time with Daddy. I may still take a quick shower before going out in the morning...but I wouldn't have time to shave without her tearing up the bathroom!
I have found that shaving in the evening with my shower works for me. I am very smooth at night and even the next evening my hair is barely noticeable. I put the long story up there because my hair has obviously stopped growing so quickly because i stopped shaving so much. Also, it seems that it has gotten much softer and less noticeable. I am perfectly happy with shaving in the evening and just lotioning the next morning! I hope you find something that works for you. P.S. It did take a while of just dealing with the not as smooth as I would like legs until the hair growth calmed down!

So, those "Smooth Away" things really work? I always wanted to try them, but thought they wouldn't work for me. My hair is pretty coarse.

And this:
"Might you consider just not shaving? It's prickly for a couple of months, but after that it's soft. I know it doesn't fit our cultural idea of feminine, but my husband still finds my legs nice and smooth even though they have hair."

Nasty.
