I have been diagnosed with moderate to severe depression with anxiety. I was on lexapro samples for several months which did a great job for me but my insurance won't cover the RX. I have an appt this Thurs with my pcp to go over other meds that my insurance will cover but I don't want to go into this "blind". any SSRI's you guys recommend or don't recommed and why?

thank you for the advice. I had researched a "generic" along the lines of lexapro and found the generic for Celexa but wanted to check out all of my options since there seem to be quite a few out there. I'll let you know how it goes at my appt Thurs afternoon.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ok, went for my appt today and we ended up going with the generic for Celexa. I took a print out of all the comments plus chatted with my therapist for her opinion. if I don't feel I'm doing well wnough on Celexa after 30 days then my insurance will allow me to go up to Lexapro as it is a "step 2" therapy drug. thanks so much for all of your opinions and insight. it's also nice knowing I'm not alone as I haven't discussed this with many of the moms I exercise with. I'm just glad to have finally figured out "what was wrong" so that it can be fixed. thanks again!

I was diagnosed with depression a few months ago and a friend of mine was diagnosed with anxiety. We are both on Zoloft which seems to be working good for both of us. It may be an option for you. Hope this helps.

Hello. I have been diagnosed with the same problem. I was put on Effexor CR for a few months and IT DID NOT WORK. The reason I'm stressing that so much besides the obvious is because I am now in a state where I am between meds and the withdrawal from this stuff is hell. If you "Google" "effexor withdrawal" you will see many, many, many horror stories. I was put on Paxil a few years ago and do realize that most SSRI's have some side effects as well as withdrawal symptoms but nothing like this.

I would deffinately do some research online before deciding on something.

DO NOT TAKE EFFEXOR!!!!

A.,I will have to agree with Hunter M.There are alot of natural herbs that will put back what your body is naturally missing. It will do it with no side effects or long term damage...like some of these presciptions. Please look into natural ways...the web is a good place to start.I have lived thru a 10 yr.marriage with someone who had the same thing. The long term damage is unspeakable. The things the doctors are not telling are shocking.Check into it for yourself, first,Please.Reg

I agree with Prozac. It worked very well for me. Not only is it inexpensive, but Prozac is now making a weekly pill! The generic is called fluxotine hcl.
Good luck!

I don't know if this helps, but I recently suffered some intense panic attacks and was put on ativan (it made me really groggy) and the dr switched me to klonopin. Works great and I dont feel any affects other than no panic attack!

hey A., i just wanted to say keep it up sweetie! you are doin' a great job. I know it's hard to be alone with a brand new baby. My husband was away the first year of our sons life. He was colicy and never wanted to sleep!
It will get better! Give yourself a break, you can't expect to be the same person you were befor your not sleeping, probly not eating and your sad. Don't worry about the house. Just try to rest and take a good vitamin and see your doc. exersize will help with depression too. It's getting ready to get warm so maybe you and the babe can take walks together. they like the fresh air. Good luck sweetie,R.

Hi A.,

I have been on anxiety and depression drugs for many years, just so you know I am a bit older than most of you, I'm currently 53 yr. old. I am no longer on any meds, and feel the best I have felt in years. I was initially started on Prozac and Xanax and was mantained on these for year; I was eventually changed to Paxil and did quite well with this too. I don't know if you are taking anything for the anxiety like a benzodiazapine. I just want to caution you that this is a quick fix for the problem, but not a long term solution. I have experienced extreme depression and anxiety, and I empathize with you. It will take some time for you to start to feel better, just hang in there. I know if you are a full time worker and mom that's enough to stress anyone. Please be very careful if you are taking any benzodiazapines. For me it took a very long time to get off of them, I wish you the best, and hope this helps you. K. F.

A.,
I don't know enough to advice about RX drugs, but I do know that there is evidence/support for supplementing with higher levels of omega 3 (fish oil) to combat depression/anxiety. I have customers who report success using SeaBiotics AklyTransfactor for such purposes and while it's not covered by insurance, you don't have to worry about side effects, etc. You can go to www.norwaymedical.com to learn more or respond back to me. All my best,
H.

I have to agree with the suggestions of Celexa. That is what I switched to when I couldn't afford the Lexapro and it has worked great. It has a generic, unlike Lexapro and has a very similar chemical make up as Lexapro. Lexapro actually came from Celexa. But ask your dr. They will probably know best what will work with you and your body.

My daughter was on Lexapro with great success but out insurance wouldn't cover it either and it was way too much for us to afford so her doctor switched her to Celexa which is a form of Lexapro but has been on the market longer so a generic is offered. After switching, we have not noticed any difference from the Lexapro and the $8/month is MUCH more affordable! Hope this helps.

Gosh girl - i'm so sorry to hear about your situation. I too have severe depression and anxiety. All i can say is it can be more than a short resolve. Sometimes it takes patience to find the one/combo that works for you. But there's really no other way, in my opinion. For people like me w/severe depression you have to be on something to live. Which sucks, but it is what it is. I, personally, take Cymbalta and Seroquel. I hope you find what you need, and i'm always here if you wanna talk or vent! Email is ____@____.com care!!!

Prozac is one of the best "old standbys" It has been around for years, is effective for so many people and is inexpensive. Give it a try!!! But make sure you give it, as all others, about 2 months to really be effective. Good luck!

I have tried every drug under the sun. I had severe depression for years. The only drug I had not taken was Zoloft, and now I will never go back to anything else. It was given to me while I was pregnanat, and my husband would do a comercial for them. I think if your man has to choose between a whiney, weepy, unhappy woman or a woman with a slower sex drive, but that is happy and herself, I would hope he would choose that latter. It does slow your sex drive, but that just means he had to try a little harder ;)-

I highly recommend Cymbalta. It is kinda new, so not sure if your insurance will cover it. Your doc might have samples of that. I also take XanaxXR for anxiety. You might not need something like Xanax, depends on how bad your anxiety is. Maybe just a low dose until you get your anxiety under control. Hope you feel better.

Hi, I am 40 and was dx with depression ..manic depression when I was 27 years prior were a living h*** to the point that my husband said get help or I am getting it for you. well I started with just therapy only holding off with the rx until I realized that I was about to walk out on yet another commitment that was very important to me ..school. I saw a psy. who worked with my counsler who prescribed prozac wow the light bulb came on. 3 yrs later I was feeling the symptoms start to come back so I went yet again to a counsler and was put on paxil sorry don't remember the mg. but it definitely did not work..so from there I was given a stronger dose of prozac and still nothing but migranes...with this illness I seem to think I am ok and start to try things myself only to end up worse off...celexa was the choice offered by my family doc at the time again a mess..Finally after struggling with myself over the whole med. thing I came to terms with the fact that mental illness is nothing to play with became gut honest with myself then w/ the doc. and found effexor slow release worked !!! Then it all came back again my body bcam tolerant and now I take paxil sr 37.5. I am at a point in my life now though (menapause) that my concern is once again do I struggle with yet another med or do I want to try organic vitamins? I am here to tell you that this is a very SERIOUS dx and staying in close contact w/ doc. family and supporive friends who understand is crucial. Not everyone is the same with this either we are all different and require different treatment, unlike birth control. Please do yourself, and your family a favor be gut honest and do not give up! Some can take meds for short periods and be fine , however most it is a lifetime process, and treatment. Chin -up though you are not alone and if you need to chat feel free to do so.

A., I tried Cymbalta and it did not help my anxiety nor the pain I was experiencing. Zoloft didn't help me at all, either. I am on Lexapro now and now feel lucky that my insurance covers it. It exhausts me, though, so I may end up switching to something else. The one thing that I know for sure is that you won't know what medications are right for you until you try them. I reacted so differently to my meds than my psychiatrist told me I would. And withdrawls are terrible so I'd take that advice not to take a drug that is notorious for withdrawl problems. Good luck!!! You'll find something to help!

Celexa is very similar to Lexapro and it also has a generic available. Wal-Mart and Sam's have the citalopram(which is the generic for Celexa) for $4.00 for 30 tablets. Be careful about herbs and natural meds. They can interfer with other meds that you maybe taking. If you chose to go the natural route, be sure to check interactions between your other medications. Hope this helps
