Awful hemorrhoids...need Advice and Experiences

I got hemorrhoids after my first baby, and after delivering each baby they got pretty bad. They've always improved to the point of not bothering me until after baby number four. TMI - She is now eight months old and they are still extrememly painful when I "go" and they bleed every time. They don't bother me much during other times of the day though. I am at a loss of what to do short of surgery, and I really don't know if I want to go there. I am regular, eat healthy foods and enough fiber, drink lots of water, use Tucks to wipe, and use hemorrhoid cream. I feel like I am doing everything I can. I just need to know if there is anyone else that has gone through this and had them improve with time. I am still nursing so I don't know if that effects them at all, but I have to do something because I don't want to live with this pain every time I go! Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice! I did see a doctor and it turned out to be an anal fissure that is causing the pain, which is a tear in the skin, and can happen during childbirth apparently. I got some prescription cream and it should help it heal within a few weeks.

Its time to talk to your doctor about solutions.

Make an appointment to have them ligated - rubber band ligation. I had the same problem you described but kept putting off dealing with them. One day, one of the hemorrhoids thrombosed and that was excruciating. I had to see a colon/rectal surgeon, who cut the hemorrhoid open & removed the vein and that was pretty darn painful, too - for several weeks. See a gastroenterogist and take care of them before they hit that point.

This is going to sound odd, but it worked for me.
Put a couple of ice cubes in a ziploc bag and seal it after removing as much of the air as you can. Tuck it between your cheeks and sit on it for about twenty minutes.
At first, the cold will be highly uncomfortable, but if you can tough it out, it will numb the pain, shrink the swelling, and stop the bleeding.

Make an appointment with a GI dr and see what your options are. My mom had hemorrhoids and her GI used Rubber Band Ligation. It worked well and took care of the problem plus it was done in the doctor's office. Info on it can be found here.

Have you been to a gastroenterologist? If you haven't, you should go.

Sometimes, by giving you a rectal exam, it can push the external hemorrhoids back inside and give you relief. This specialist can also give you hemorroid cream that is prescription only - it might be a lot better than what you're using.

Please get to the doctor. Until you know what kind of hemorrhoids you have, you don't have the right information to help you make a plan. I don't blame you for not wanting surgery. I have read too many accounts of people having surgery and not being happy with the results. But there are alternatives to surgery and you must figure this out with a specialist's help.

I have been lucky enough that mine are only mild, but my poor husband has had to deal with just what you are describing. When it became thrombosed though, he had to have some blood clots removed and that was nothing short of horrible for him. Since then, he has had 2 flare ups that were not as bad. He had that minor procedure almost 7 years ago. So I guess the answer you're looking for, is yes, they can get less painful with time, but that loose skin never goes away and you can end up in a bad position pretty quickly when you least expect it. So, stool softeners will help, I would do that first, along with a doctor appointment to discuss options. My husband was prescribed something called "proctofoam" which was actually pretty helpful to him. Prep H and the like really don't hold a candle to it, I would ask your doctor for it in the mean time. I don't think nursing really has a lot to do with it, doesn't make sense, but now that I have thought about it, mine got better once I stopped, maybe its all that sitting, I don't know! Good luck, get checked, hope you see some relief soon!

M.,

sounds like you need to have them removed. You can bleed out from hemorrhoids that burst.

You can sit on the round pillows - you can ask a pharmacist about them - ask for the pillows people use after lower back and hemorrhoid surgery...it looks like a round lifesaver....that will help with pressure.

Keeping your bowel movements soft is the other way to go...sounds like you are doing that...I would just get the surgery done if I were you...

Sorry!!

I agree with others who said to go to the doctor. I know someone who experienced a similar problem, and it was a benign tumor. Not to scare you, you're probably fine, but you can't diagnose yourself.

I have had them after childbirth and at other times. I had them dealt with in the doctor's office. He simply cut them out to remove the clot. He used a local anaesthetic.

Until you go to a doctor, and I think you ought to, stool softener, and fiber supplements. They will keep your stool soft and less irritating to your bottom.

Best,
