Best Sunscreen for Face for a Toddler Who Has Eczema?

I have a 1 1/2 year old who seems to be getting over her moderate eczema that appeared at 8 months. However, if I put a normal sunscreen on her face, the skin on her face gets all blotchy and red about a day later. Does anyone have experience with a sunscreen that's effective, but for sensitive skin, the face, or made especially for eczema?

I have eczema and am allergic to sunscreen chemicals - my dermatologist sold me Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30 for babies. It is very emollient and chemical free. You can find it online and it isn't very expensive.

Hi Elizbeth,
The sunscreen I use on my two children, which are 5 and 2, is from Arbonne. It is part of there ABC line. This is a botanically based company. I got into this company when my now 2 year old was 4 months old w/ eczema and nothing else would work on his skin. I used there baby lotion for 2 weeks w/ many applications a day, and it worked. I then tried the sunscreen. I can't say enough good things about the sunscreen. My friends who always burn in the sun use this and now do not burn. If you would like more information go to arbonne.com or e-mail me at ____@____.com. I am a consultant for Arbonne, but that is now why I am writing to you. I am happy to help you in any way I can. I hope this helps and good luck.

My son has severe eczema at one time - itchy, bleeding awful skin from the top of his head down to his feet (not kidding). Our dermatologist recommends the Vanicream line and the sunscreen is excellent. You can get it in Dallas over the counter at Doughtery's Pharmacy or order it online (www.psico.com). We use the shampoo, soap, bath oil and lotion along with the Sunscreen. It has made a huge difference. It was developed by some doctors at the Mayo clinic for people with skin issues like eczema. They took out all the things people have reactions too. I would recommend it!

My son has eczema as well, diagnosed in infancy. He is currently one year old and here is my advice:

Use a sunblock that is a pure physical, not chemical blocker. Physical blockers contain zinc or titanium dioxide and nothing else. These are safe for babies/kids & blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Try Blue Lizard for sensitive skin (lotion) or IS Clinical Powder Sunblock. I am currently trying a pure physical blocker from SkinCeudicals and so far it is non irritating as well. These products are available in dermatologist offices or on-line. Good luck!

My son doesn't have eczema, but does have extremely senstitive skin. Most sunblocks give him a bad blotchy rash. We have started using Bert's Bees Sunblock. He doesn't react to that one. It is bright yellow and thick, but it doesn't smell bad or stain clothes.

Hello E.,

I would have your daughter tested for allergies. Many times eczema is due to an allergy and perhaps those ingredients are in the sunblock. Good luck! ~C.~

California Baby has a great sunscreen that is natural (no chemicals) and made for super sensitive skin. I believe you can get it at Whole Foods and some Targets. Also Kiss My Face sunscreen is natural so it won't irritate the skin. I found this brand at Kroger's in this organic/natural section.

The splotchy red spots could be from the sun, not the sunscreen OR it could be the perfume in the sunblock, you might just try a different brand with no scent to it.

I have a cheaper alternative for you. My daughter had terrible excema. It has cleared up for the most part, but her skin is very sensitive. I bought a $1 jar of sunscreen at Walmart called FACE. It is white when you rub it on and then soakes in clear. It is safe for lips, too. She has never reacted to it. Good Luck.

Arbonne has an entire baby line formulated for very sensitive skin, including an awesome SPF 30 sunscreen. There are no chemical dyes or fragrances that can aggravate excema. My daughter has excema and we spot treat with the Arbonne diaper cream but I love that the sunscreen has no smell to it. If you are interested in trying it out, I am happy to help. I also offer my 35% consultant discount to everyone. Best of luck!

Arbonne baby products work great for this. They are actually dermatologist tested for eczema and the sun screen does not burn the eyes. The baby wash and lotion clears up eczema in many children. The products are dye and chemical free. It is the best stuff I have ever used for my children. Good luck! Feel free to email me at ____@____.com.

I had a similar problem with my son (we can't leave face paint on his face either). The pediatrician recommended Water Babies (specifically the name brand...I had been using a store brand alternative). I tried it, and sure enough, his skin was fine.

Hi E.,

My oldest 2 children have eczema and we use the Arbonne sunscreen on them. They have never had a negative reaction to it and my husband and I even use it on ourselves. If you'd like to sample it, let me know and I can send you a sample for you to try it out.

Good luck finding the right fit!

Have a great weekend,

I'm not sure what the best brand is, but what ever you end up using, you need to wash it off completely when your daughter is out of the sun - a full bath is best. My son gets a rash from all kinds of sunscreen if it is left on too long.

The ABC line from Arbonne. I use the sunscreen on all my kids and even for me on my face. And, the whole set is awesome. You might try shading his face with a hat, too.
