Go see live theatre productions??

Which is your favorite musical..or play?? I just saw "Wicked" in San Francisco last night for the fourth time. (yes..I am on my way to being a "Wicked" junkie) Luckily my husband "supports my habit".

So what have you seen? What did you prefer..what was just so so?

Have a nice weekend ladies(I just sang that in my head...hee..hee!)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for taking the time to respond!! I will keep my eyes open and see some of the ones mentioned.

Ugh...I feel for you ladies that saw plays having to do with a sock puppet/sodomy and gang rape in the Congo.

I personally prefer more light hearted and fun experiences at the theatre..but an occasional French Revolution is enjoyable :)

I'm with Christine. Phantom all the way!!! :) There was a time (too out of practice now) when I could hit all of the notes in the actual song "The Phantom of the Opera" as sung in the original key as written for S. Brightman. I saw "Cats" once, but wasn't thrown into a fit of delight over it. I'm probably in the minority, but I just don't get what the big deal is about that show. :)

My favorite is Phantom of the Opera!!! 11 times! Even my spontaneous visit to London where I actually sat in the very last row (very intimate theatre) was awesome.

Wicked was great. I also really liked The Lion King...great show.

Love.

I'm a total philistine, though. ;) Give me big budget producer who haa pulled out all the stops & a gifted director with amazing actors every time.

But full disclosre :I was one of those schitzo girls in highschool who did the multi-clique thang (theatrecrowd, artsy, AP, science chick, jock). The theatre crowd thing translates to stage manager etc. And I took my son to every major show/ballet/opera dress rehearsal in the city when he was little (less than $10 a show, and directors notes in between scenes). And have a lot of friends in acting/directing (stage & film)... So Ive got a strong theatre background. Even though I'm a philistine ;).

Favs

- Les Mis

- Cirque du Soleil ... Anything.

- Shakespeare done RIGHT (as in, hilarious &/or 'real' not with aires and serious schnobbery. WS was a funny funny man. And his plays are lively/hilarious. Even the tragedies. I've seen more butchered, over acted, gag me shakespeare than I care to admit). Fortunately the NW gets a little nazi-ish about Shakespeare. Ashland, baby, Ashland. http://www.osfashland.org/. But Seattle children's theatre has Shakespeare for kids classes, & the Bathhouse has kids camps... And both do a GREAT job. Really. We take Mr. S very very seriously. I have this soft spot for Shrew & Hamlet & As You Like It /12th Night that's hard to describe.

- Peter Pan

- Alice in the looking glass

- Pirates of Penzance

- Moulin Rouge

- Chicago

- Victor Victoria (Its the As You Like It/12th night Shakespeare thing)

- A Christmas Carol

________

Just saw Wicked! a month or two ago. Not a fav (aka I won't go see it over & over), but it was FANTASTIC.

HATED plays include:

- Our Town.
- Anythinh "like" Our Town
- A small handful of off off off broadway

_______

OMG!!! Angioplasty!!! The sodimizing sock puppet!!! I walked out of that show!!! I am sooooo sorry. That's like the only TV show you've ever seen being the naked stoned chick who paints herself and says creepy things on the public access channel!

I've only been to one live theater thing and I'll never do it again. It was just a play, not a musical, and I don't remember what it was about. I do remember that it was very low budget and that one of the characters was named Millet.

Millet had multiple personalities, which talked to each other, and one was represented by this sock puppet he had on his hand at all times. Millet & the sock had a running dialogue throughout the whole thing.

Well, in one scene, Millet walked into a different room and say, "this room looks familiar," and I-kid-you-not, the sock whirled around and got in Millet's face and screamed, "Millet was sodomized in a room like this !"

That was it for me. I started absolutely howling with laughter - complete with snorting and hiccups and crying and I could. Not. Stop. Eventually the actors just stood there as I screeched like a hyena, and finally an usher asked me to leave.

It wasn't supposed to be funny after all.

I'll never go to a live performance again & risk that.

There are too many to count, to be honest. "Supports your habit" was funny! (Congrats - tickets are so expensive!)

Some of my best memories of traveling to the Big Apple are the musicals and plays. (Not to leave out everywhere else, but there's just something special about NYC...)

I've seen Phantom, Nutcracker we see every year (not a musical but love the ballet as well). I want to see so many more. Maybe this year! Have a great weekend!

My favorite musical of all time is Hair. If you haven't seen it, make a point to do so...besides having wonderful music and choreography, it's a very poignant story of Vietnam-era woes. It's really beautiful. They made a movie, which is excellent. I own it, and the soundtrack.

I saw Cats on Broadway when I was in New York 16 years ago on vacation. It's very overrated, in my opinion. ;) We were forced to memorize a very long soliliquay (I can't spell that!) from it in middle school, so maybe I'm biased.

I saw Beauty and the Beast at the Orpheum in the Cities, and it was nice. That was even longer ago.

I've seen WAY too many amateur productions...it's a big thing in our small town.

My best friend from high school just saw Newsies on Broadway and I am very jealous...we watched the movie about 200 times when we were young. She grew up to travel and got to see a live production...I grew up to deliver newspapers. Sigh. I guess we both are living the dream...in our own ways. ;)

Anyhow, if you've never seen Hair, go rent it. I can't praise it enough!

(After scanning other answers, I want to add that I actually think Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is AMAZING, if done right. I also really like Hairspray...but pretty much just the movie with John Travolta. I also could watch Grease until I die...but again, only the movie with John Travolta. Have I gone off track here?)

Fun question!

I LOVE going to broadway-style shows. I prefer musicals over plays. I have seen about two dozen though and there were many others that I really loved.

Funny though, I hated Wicked. Everyone I know loved it, but I just hated it. I'm not even sure why, because I think the concept is a good one. But I didn't like the book and I didn't like the show. Weird. I don't know anyone else who didn't like it.

Favorites:
Les Mis
Rent

Next on my list (Loved all of these too)

The Who's Tommy
Miss Saigon
Chicago
Avenue Q
Mamma Mia
Hairspray
A Chorus Line
Sound of Music

Phantom of the Opera, for me, depends on the cast. The first time I saw it I wasn't thrilled. I liked it, but didn't love it. I was also only about 16 or so. I saw it many years later with a different cast and loved it. Not sure if it was because I was older and knew some of the music by then, or if it really was that much better the next time around.

My high school put on Guys & Dolls and Oklahoma back when I was there, and I was involved in both shows. So I love those too, but haven't ever seen a professional performance of either.

Shows I've seen and liked, but don't love as much as the ones above Damn Yankees
Blood Brothers
Anything Goes
Cats
The Lion King
Starlight Express (I was only 10 though and thought the roller skating was so cool at that age),

Ones I didn't like much: Company, Wicked

I know I've seen others, but nothing else is coming to mind right now.

I love musicals! I loved Wicked! I will definitely see it when it comes around to LA again. I was obsessed with phantom of the opera when I was younger, I saw that several times.
We have the wicked soundtrack on heavy rotation in my car right now, actually.
I like to see more local productions of musicals as well, like whatever my high school is doing.
I love musical theater. If you have satellite radio there is a "broadways best"
station go listen to.

ETA Christine my sister starred in her HS production of The Diviners. I remember it well. Intense play!
