Well my husband and I can not seem to get along anymore.. I think I have had about enough but I can not let my relationship just fall apart without knowing that I at least gave it 100%.. I love him with all my heart but he has gotten so verbally abusive to the point that I cant take it, well I refuse to take it and this makes me as verbally abusive to him as he is to me. We weren’t like this at all. Things started changing about 1yr ago and it keeps getting worse.. I don’t know what to do any advise is welcome. We are both willing to try couples counseling.. So if anybody out there knows of a good counselor that is not over priced and that is in the Chicago area please feel free to let me know.. Thank you in advance...

There's an organization downtown called Cathedral Counseling and the therapists are all very good. www.cathedralcounseling.org They used to have a sliding scale according to your ability to pay. I think this is probably still the case but you should call them to find out: ###-###-####

I would also recommend the Family Institute in Evanston. http://www.family-institute.org/ They are affiliated with Northwestern University and they have a slew of great counselors. I'm guessing they would also have some sort of sliding scale since they are connected to the university but you should call to find out. If you have health insurance chances are some of it is covered. We paid a $20 copay and the insurance covered the rest, up to a certain number of visits I believe. Here's their number: ###-###-####

If your husband won't go I suggest you go for yourself anyway. It sounds like you could benefit from talking to someone. We all can! Good luck to you.

Check with your church or synagogue. Many of them offer free couples/family counseling.

I second the recommendation for the Family Institute - they do have a sliding scale. I know that the only insurance in-network for them is BCBS - but you may be able to submit to your own insurance as an out of network provider.

It's great that your husband is willing to go as well - since that means he hasn't given up hope either. Good luck to you.

I feel your pain! I am sure couples counseling will work for you. I have a couple of things I really want you to hear, though, from me who has had the same thing happen and am now on the happier side of things!

a- Call university psychiatry/counseling departments - the students have to complete so many hours of counseling and they offer it at very, very low rates - if you're by NU I've heard they have this

b- What is overpriced for you? I went to a counselor who my friend recommended, even though she charged $200 some dollars per hour. We did not have the money. But let me tell you two things. One, the counselor ended up billing my insurance but never billing me, knowing of our financial difficulties, so she was only paid half. Maybe you could ask another counselor if they could do this? Take part of it from insurance and at least discount your bill. Two, THE COST WILL BE WORTH IT. This is your marriage. You must fix it. Consider it an INVESTMENT in all of your future happiness.

Good luck.
