I have just recently found out my 8 year old son has adhd. We tried Intuniv for a very short time just because he couldnt function while he was taking it. He would fall asleep anytime he was still and he also became very grouchy and negative. I am looking for a pediatrician that is extremely knowledgable about Inattentive ADHD.
Thank you all for your answers. We did initially get the diagnosis from a pediatric neurologist. she was the one that wanted us to try the Intuniv on him. To date we have not made any changes in his diet. I am very willing to try it though. I guess I am a little worried because he is kind of a picky eater and I really don't even know where to start. I have been doing a lot of reading about ADD and learning disabilities to try and figure out where to go from here. He is a very sweet little boy and we really don't want to change him in any way. I will be making some phone calls on Monday to try and figure out what I'm going to do. Thank you all so much for your input!

You want a psychiatrist not a pediatrician. They are just not trained to understand all the meds.

I would ask the psychologist or psychiatrist who diagnosed him for a referral if you don't feel your own pediatrician is well versed enough.
Just curious because we have a recent ADD diagnosis here - did you try any diet or behavior modifications before jumping into meds? I ask that with no judgment implied -- simply curious.
Both my kids are ADHD and daughter is also an Aspie. You just have to keep trying different meds and different doses until you get the right one. It took almost a year of doing this for my son. We finally just now got the right medication and dose for him that works. So I don't think you need to find another doctor, just try the different meds. Also, I think its the Psychiatrists that specialize in ADHD and can give meds (Psychologists can test and diagnose but not give meds, but I may have this backwards). So maybe get a referral from your primary doctor. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Okay, pediatricians treat childhood illnesses and give kids their shots. They aren't supposed to treat mental health issues.
You need to find a psychiatrist who does children with ADHD. They are going to be knowledgeable about the current meds and what has been good that is still around.
I would not trust a doc who is not a specialist in that area with my child's brain and behavior issues.

I was wondering the same thing as Veronica. We choose not to do meds with our son. And his coaches have told us not to recently we discovered caffeine. It helps him a lot!! He get's mountain dew more than coffee just because it's easier to open a can than to give him coffee and the good creamers he can't have and black coffee he wont drink.
