Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

I don't have any information on that, but now you have me worried about all those things. I recently had tubal done with my second child. Hopefully none of that is true.

Side effects are not compulsory. Most of the time none of them happen. Plus the relief you get from knowing you wont get pregnant is enormous.

i had a tubal ligation after my 2nd child and i read up on it also. kinda scared me with all of the issues that these people had. i don't think that the majority of people have these symptoms. my MIL claims that she got facial hair after she had hers but i think that if you are prone to facial hair that's when you would get it. i had some stomach issues for about a few months after i had it. as far as some sharp stabbing pains. nothing unbearable, however. i don't know abt the sleep issues bc after having kids do you sleep well anyways? :). anyway i know quite a few women who have had this done, and none of them have had problems

Kelly, I don't know anything about the syndrome you are talking about. I had a tubal ligation done over 30 years ago and I never had any problems. It was so much better than taking the pill or anything else. You get it done and then as long as it is done right there is no reason to worry about it. It never changed anything in my life. I still had my periods and all that goes along with being a woman. I think it even made my sex life better. All the things you have pointed out happen in menopause and that you can't get away from. With a Tubal Ligation you are just stopping the eggs from being able to get fertilized not putting man made chemicals in your body. This syndrome truly does not exist. There have been cases wehre patients have noted some differences following the surgery but growing older and other metabolic issues can produce the same symptoms. BTL is good but remember the IUD is actually better in terms of effectiveness especially the MIRENA. Mirena does have hormones and they act locally (only on the uterus). 10 year copper IUDs (paragard) and Implanon are also extremely effective. Consider the ESSURE which is a tubal occlusion system done in the office which avoids the possible complications of a BTL. i had a bilatteral tubaligation after my second son was born and had none of that stuff. so i would not worry about it.

I had a tubal done in Jan. 2007 the same time as the c-section for my 4th child. At first, it seemed ok. I didn't get the syndrome that you describe. I got my period... all the time. It would last for weeks and then go away only for a few days at a time, then start up again. I don't know for sure if it was because of the tubal or if it was just from a uterus that had 4 kids. We opted to do an endometrial ablation after 16 months of going through the non-stop period. That ended the period, but caused another extremely rare complication for me. I ended up having a hysterectomy last October and have one ovary left. I feel SO much better!
I have friends that have had tubals with no complications at all. Some that had the tubal did have the procedure push them into menopause, as you describe in your syndrome symptoms. It's different for every woman. Talk with your doctor about all your options before making a decision.

I had a tubal ligation after my third. All of the symptoms are easy to deal with. I do have scar tissue on the right missing tube that causes discomfort at menstrual time. But if you are done making babies, go ahead.
Talk to your doctor about it, the nurses on staff (they have the knowledge and experience)and follow up on research. Blessings, S.

I, too, was considering having a tubal ligation during a c-section to deliver my second child in June when I came across info regarding PTLS in my research. The main symptoms I read about were heavier, more painful periods and increased mood swings/PMS. Enough women have shared their stories on the web to convince me that some women do indeed suffer from PTLS. As with many things medical, some women have no symptoms and the TL is wonderful for them while others have symptoms and suffer after the procedure which would lead one to believe that the procedure was the cause of the problems. There are even women who say they had the TL reversed and the symptoms went away! Anyway, there was enough info out there for me to reconsider my decision. I then researched vasectomies and discovered there are virtually no side effects, it's much cheaper, not surgery but an out-patient procedure, quicker, and just as, if not more, effective than a TL. My husband and I agreed since we do not want more children it makes sense for one of us to "get fixed" and since a TL has possible long term side effects and a vasectomy does not he agreed to get a vasectomy. This may or may not be an option for you but something to consider.

If you do decide to go ahead with the TL ask your doctor how he/she plans to do it. My doc said that he used to clamp the tubes but had two procedures fail so now he cartarizes (burns) and clamps. I also personally know two women who had a TL and got pregnant again so please, do your research and ask questions before making a final decision.

I am having my second c-section next Wednesday and I too considered the TL. Until.......I heard ONE too many horror stories out there dealing with these exact issues! I feel after two c-sections delivering two 10 pound babies, that a vasectomy is the LEAST my DH can do!!! ;)

Talk to your hubby about this! I personally don't want to have to deal with any more "hormonal issues" than absolutely necessary! Good luck with your decision!!!
