I am 24 wks pregnant with my 3rd child and I spoke with my OB last week about getting my tubes tied. He said it's a great idea bc I am 30 yrs old and will have 3 kids in just a few months. He is going to tie and burn them. I was very excited about my decision and so was my husband until this weekend I spoke with a friend of mine who is a PA and she said periods get heavier and cramping is worse when you do that. I have been on the pill my whole adult life, unless I get off of it to get pregnant. I have gotten pregnant the 1st month I was off the pill everytime so all I know without hormones is when I was in High School before being on the pill. Periods were very heavy and very h*** o* me so I don't want to go thru the surgery and then have to get on the pill anyway bc of bad periods. Can anyone help me on this before I decide for sure?

What can I do next?

My mother and sister both had their tubes tied. When I was having my second child via c-section my doctor asked if I wanted to have mine tied. My husband and I opted not to so he will be the one getting fixed. Mainly because my sister and mother had horrible periods after the tubal. I figured I would probably have the same problem. Just make sure to ask your doctor about all the side effects of getting a tubal. Mention the heavy bleeding and see what he say about it. It is far much easier to get your husband fixed if he is willing.

Dear C.,

I've never had my tubes tied. But I can tell you what my friends and family have said. Every one of them said she mourned and grieved and regretted it. You never know what might happen later. You might decide to have another one after all.

I mean hopefully nothing will happen. But what if something does happen and you decide you want more? Why burn your bridges? Besides, after 3, more is not harder. Three seems to be the magic number that is the hardest to take care of.

Anyway, please consider not doing it. None of my friends or family who did that were happy about it later.

Hope this helps.
A.

I was in the same exact situation at the same exact age. I had the tubal and yes, my periods are worse but for a shorter duration - or so it seems. I had been on the pill so long, I did not remember what they were like I guess. Have you spoken to your doctor about Novasure? It is a permanent solution to periods and I am seriously thinking about having it done. Insurance pays for both - or mine will anyway.

C.,

Why don't you and your husband look into getting him "fixed" rather than having a tubal done for you? A friend of mine's husband had this done and was only out of commission for 2 days rather than her being out for a lot longer. I've also read several articles that state that hysterectomy's are more prevelant in women who have had tubals along with the higher rate Cervical cancer occuring. And if you guys did decide at a later date to have more kids, then a vasectomy is easier to reverse than a tubal. I know that when my husband and I decide to quit having kids, he's going to "get fixed"! Hope this helps in your decision.

My period was also really bad, and i had to be on the pill then the depo shot to help. I had 2 boys and between the dr and my hubby and i we decided that the tubal was the way to go (too many problems during my pregnancy and labor to have another). I really only have 2 things to say about this, 1)My period is not really as bad as it was (sometimes it lasts as long) but no really HEAVY bleeding or BAD cramping not like before. And 2) I would really sit down with your hubby and make absolutly sure this is what you want. We talked alot about it and I thought we were sure, but now almost 2 years later, there are times i wish i could have just one more baby (even though the dr advised not to). I hope this helps you, good luck in this tough decision. And CONGRATS on the baby!!

NO NO NO NO NO...I cannot express this enough. I had mine tied 7 years ago. And I cannot fathom the anguish, pain, depression, other side effects a person goes through after getting their tubes tied.

FIRST, research Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome
Then visit..Fit To Be Untied - this is a forum of ladies who have had their tubes tied and regret it. Even if you dont plan to stick around, just visit the board on PTLS and view everyone's symptoms. This is a REAL disease.

When you tie your tubes, your body does NOT get the same amount of hormones your body needs. If you dont like your monthly cycles now, just wait till after yout TL.

Before my TL, I used to have 3-4 days of normal light-medium flow, and after I had 5 days of pur heavy flow. I dont mean to be gross or negative. But please make sure this is what you want, and no more kids. I had 3 when I had my tubes tied. A lot can change in your life. Divorce and remarriage. You may want another later. A TL should not be a decision you make while you are expecting.

I had my tubes reversed and now expecting twins with a new husband.

Try cryoablation instead of the pill for your bad periods. I had the procedure and it changed my life. I went from having 2 good period free, bloating free, yucky free weeks a month, to a period that doesn't require 2 days of bed rest, and three weeks, before during and after of torture. I had my tubes done and then the cryoablation done. I also had TVT surgery, for leaking, They can fix that too.

Treatment

The good news is that menorrhagia is treatable. The specific treatment recommended by your doctor will depend on a number of factors, such as the cause of the condition and your overall health, as well as other considerations.

Maybe your doctor has mentioned a treatment option called endometrial ablation. Endometrial ablation treatment involves eliminating the lining of your uterus, which is responsible for menstrual bleeding. By eliminating all or most of the lining, there is less or no tissue to shed each menstrual cycle, and therefore, dramatically reduced bleeding, or even none at all.

Endometrial ablation can be performed in a number of ways, including a heat-based approach (thermal ablation) or by using sub-zero temperatures (cryoablation).

It's important to know that endometrial ablation can sometimes prevent the need for hysterectomy, and offers many benefits over surgical treatment. Many physicians believe a less invasive treatment, like Her Option® from AMS, can avoid or postpone hysterectomy and should be your first line of defense.

Unlike hysterectomy, endometrial ablation allows you to:

Keep your uterus and natural hormones
Avoid a hospital stay
Experience less pain and enjoy a quick recovery

Mine were bad before and horrible after. I ended up on b/c pills to keep my periods light AFTER getting a tubal. Good luck with your decision.

Hi C.,

I spent about 11 or 12 years total on the pill, too, except when I was pregnant twice. I opted to have my tubal done after the birth of my twins two years ago. I will admit that I had become quite accustomed to the pill keeping my cramps very minimal and the number of total days to about 3 per month. Now, I do have more cramps, headaches pretty bad the day before I start and a period that lasts about 5 - 6 days. Sometimes when I'm in the midst of those symptoms, I think back to the pill but then again when I don't have to worry about birth control the rest of the month, that is pretty nice, too. Overall, I'm glad I did the tubal, I can deal with the other stuff pretty well. I figure I have only 12 - 15 years left of it anyway since I'm 35 - LOL.

C.,

I had my tubes tied after my last child was born (20 years ago). I was 27 at the time and I haven't regretted getting it done. I didn't experience any problems with my periods other than the fact, they were lighter (not heavier) and they didn't seem to last as long (3 to 4 days) instead of 7 to 10 days in length). I also got rid of the horrible cramping that I used to experience. Tying your tubes is strictly a personal decision and you will know if it is right for you. Pray about it before you make your final decision.

Good luck!
M.

Hi C.!! Congratulations on Baby #3. I'm 42 years old and have three children (all c-sections). My periods have always been totally carefree, easy, and brief in duration (3-4 days). My birth control method over the years was diaphram, except for the five years leading to my last pregnancy when I did take the pill. My last child was born when I was almost 36 years old. At that time, I had my tubes tied (cut, burned, etc.) and I have NEVER had any problems. It's actually quite liberating with no burdens at all, and I've never regreted it. If your doctor has no hesitations, I'd so "go for it"!!

Hi C., It is always a great idea to have you husband do the surgery but, you would still have to do something for you menstrual cycles. I would ask you Dr. about Implanon. It is a single rod inserted in your arm. It last 3 yrs and I had heard some women have no periods at all. There are several studies on it. Not all doctors insert Implanon. I know Dr. Garza with Travis OB/GYN does. I beleave in is more affordable than Mirena depending on your insurance.

Hi C.;

I had my tubes tied and carterized after baby #6. I since went through a divorce and wanted to have a child with my 2nd husband. I found that it is harder for a woman to reverse the procedure then a man. My periods got lighter but more often until I had to have a historectomy. I know that you think this would never happen to you , nor did I after 22 years with my friend and husband. You never know what may happen. I say let him do it.

I have 4 children & no desire to be pregnant again right now. So, after the fourth, I had my tubes tied & I regret it! I keep thinking, what if all the kiddos grow up & I want another baby. I wish I hadn't done it & had went another route with birth control. Alos, my periods now are terrible. I have horrible cramps & the bleeding is soooo heavy. I never even considered that it could be from getting my tubes tied. It did start ater my last daughter, so I guess it probably is from having my tubes tied.

You could look into the IUD Mirena, my insurance covered 100%, ask your OB about it.

Im also 30 and had my tubes tied after having my second. My husband and I disucussed the option of him having the surgery but it just seemed more practical for me since I was already under anesthesia...I went straight from delivery to surgery which only took about 15 minutes. Had a little pain after the surgery but nothing that kept me from doing the normal mommy stuff with a newborn. I too had been on the pill since I was a teen and although I didn't have trouble with my periods then, I haven't had trouble now either. For me, it's been a great decision.

Hello C.:

The best thing to do is get your husband "fixed", it is much safer and the down time is less. My husband had this done about 3 years ago and it is great, no birth control and no worries about me getting pregnant. He had it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday. I would look in to having him getting it done, if you two are sure you don't want anymore kids.

Good Luck,
B.
