My 11-year old has been sick. Last year she had mono. This year, she had strep in Sept. and again in Oct. This last time, before she could go back to school, she came down with bronchitis. Now she has extreme fatigue, stomach pain, and a swelling sensation in her throat. She feels like she can't swallow. Therefore, she's not eating. We've been back and forth to the doctor and all test results are normal. She's missed over two weeks of school with this. I wanted to know if anyone has heard of this happening?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your advice. There are several doctors in this clinic. The one I really liked was booked up so I had to see one Monday that I really don't care for. Things weren't better today so I got her into the doctor that listens. Anyway, more tests but they're getting us in with specialists at Texas Children's so I'll let you know how things progress. Thanks for all of your help.

Do you not think her tonsils should come out?
If the continue with strep (all the signs are strep..fatigue)
they are a carrier and may need to be removed!
My daughter was a carrier of strep....I would go and get a 2nd opinion...something is not right.
Best Hope!

I think Heather P's advice is on the right track. I would also add the importance of vitamins and supplements. Go to the health food store to get good quality vitamins. Most doctors will treat the symptoms and not get to the root of the problem. Her immune system need strengthening. (I'm not against doctors and will go to them for serious health issues.) I don't know where you live but if you go to Betsy's Health store on 1960 they are very helpful. They have given me great advice with great results.

Something to consider is a food allergy. It would explain all symptoms. Good luck to you both!

Try putting her on probiotics. It helps with the immune system and keeps your kids from getting sick as much. You can get them at Whole Foods, the have liquid and taste a lot like yogurt. This can be taken all the time, not just when they are sick. Also keep her on a healthy diet. Avoiding dairy is also a good idea like someone had recommended. Avoid sugar as well.
Good Luck!

I would ask for a thyroid check just in case. When I was low thyroid I had a goiter or an enlarged thyroid gland in my neck and I became sick more easily and frequently.

How to do a self thyroid neck check:

I just wanted to add than Mono knocks out a person's immune system. You have to rebuild your immune system and for a time afterward it will seem like you are getting everything that is going around and will be the first one hit by new illnesses in the community. I had mono when I was in the 8th grade and by the time I was through high school I was just getting to the point where I wasn't getting every cold and bug going around. It is a tough situation. Make sure your daughter washes her hands a lot. Let her know that this will help her keep from getting sick. Also, when she is not able to get to a sink, have her use a hand sanitizer as a back up measure. Getting a flu shot and pneumonia shot for her and those in the same household might also be some good preventative helps to get her through this. Good luck and hope she will be feeling better soon.

I don't have an answer for you, but one year I got strep several times. I couldn't understand why, till a friend of mine asked me if I was replacing my toothbrush each time I got strep. I haven't had strep in a couple of years. I do agree with the others about getting a second opinion. Good Luck!

B. - hang in there. My daugher had mono and she was out of school a good month. She had a severe case of it. We dealt with the same thing you are dealing with and it's frustrating and painful for the child and parents not really knowing what is wrong and then going to the doctor and there is really nothing they can do since the virus hit her system hard. She was prescribed several medications to ease her pains but that's it, it had to run its course. There were times she was in such pain, body, throat, her glands, headaches and we found ourselves at the doctor 2-3 x's a week. You have to stay on top of giving her fluids and a good supplemental vitamin. Have her rest and not over exert herself, the body has to have time to recover. If she is around someone who is ill, she will more than likely catch what they have. My daughter is now much better and it took a good year. A co-worker of mine experienced the same thing with her son. Rest, fluids, vitamins...God bless.

HI B.,
Gosh I feel bad that your daughtet has gone through soooo much! I would look into getting a new doctor if all they want to do is tests and not really treat her! You probably already have taken her to the ER, but if you haven't I would. Best of luck!

Hello,
First things first get a second opinion and possibly a third if you need it. It sounds like she has a weak immune system. Sometimes the immune system does not work properly, as with immunodeficiency disorders. These people are extremely susceptible to infection and cancer. Its better safe than to continue to allow her to go through these things. Some doctors only look as far as the eye can see or are interested in quick ins and outs ($$$). I've seen that alot with my daughter. Get another opinion its not worth your daughter suffering. Good Luck.

There is a reason that her immune system is taking these hits, and you need to know why. Easier said than done, I know. Has she experienced any recent blows in her young life? I know first hand how spiritual woes can manifest in the physical body. She might have found a new allergy. Keep an eye on her diet--avoid dairy (breaks down immune system if you're healthy); encourage roughage and water/(natural) juices/nectars and fruits and vegetables to flush her system. Cucumbers are usually good for drawing out toxins. Check her pH level.
