The Perfect Hot Dog

What's yours? Mine is the bun lightly swiped with mayo, insert dog, a line of ketchup, a line of mayo and just enough of relish to make it picture perfect.

My husband slathers his in chili, and tops it with onions and shredded cheese until the bun disappears. Its so gross.

I'll give anyone 3 guesses what I'm serving tonight for dinner, but you really only need 1!

Just ketchup and I tear the ends off the bun. Why do the buns have to be two inches longer than the hot dog, no one likes bun that much!

Oh my. I love a great chili hot dog. I make toast, place hot dogs on top, cover with a mountain of chili and a pile of cheese and eat with a fork. YUM.

When I'm not in a chili mood, I like sweet pickles and mustard on my dog.

I prefer all beef hot dogs because they taste a lot better, but I'll sometimes buy Jennie-O because I know how bad hot dogs are for you and sometimes I feel guilty feeding them hot dogs (which is rare, anyhow.)

Brand? I like Nathan's hot dogs best (they are GF.)

(However...my most memorable hot dog was the one my husband was holding in his hand, loaded down with everything under the sun, at midnight the night my water broke with my youngest. He actually said, "You're not serious" and looked at his beautiful hot dog like he wanted to cry. Yes, he ate it before we left for the hospital...while I got my things together.) :)

I mix it up ~ depends what I am in the mood for.

Sometimes just mayo and ketchup or spicy mustard and red onion or smothered in chili, cheese and yellow onion.

The hot dog itself is best when bbq'd and a little black and crunchy!

First, you need to be cooking and eating it outside.

Now, it has to fall off the stick, into a pile of mesquite ash.

Next, fish it out carefully with the stick, and scorch your fingers ever so slightly while trying to brush of the ash, and dropping it into the bun.

One stripe of mustard down the side.

Next, a layer of shredded sharp cheddar.

Wolf brand chili; smother that little darlin'.

Top with diced yellow onions.

Serve on a paper plate.

THAT is the perfect hot dog.

(Although, in a pinch, you can boil it, snuggle it into the bun with mustard and sweet relish, sprinkle with diced cheddar, and still call it a decent dog!)

as a grownup - i can only eat Kosher dogs. Hebrew National or the like. I want it cooked on a charcoal grill and topped with grilled onions. Or chili and too much cheese - I slice the dog in the middle to make room for more cheese and chili!

I also like dogs made at Rangers stadium. They have some masterful combintaions. As seen on food network

Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dogs, Texas Hot Dogs (jumbo hot dog topped with jalapeno-cheddar sauce and seasoned ground beef), Signature Hot Dogs (jumbo hot dog topped with baked beans, mustard and corn chips), Sausage Sundaes (cracked black smoked sausage split and filled with chopped brisket, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes), BYOHD (build your own hot dog), Frito-dogs, Philly dogs, Nolan Ryan “Hot” Dogs (with hot sweet relish), Chicago Dogs, Chili-Cheese Footlongs, Veggie Dogs (located only in Center Field Market), Corndogs, Frankfurters, Mini Hot Dog Sliders and even regular ole plain hot dogs.

MMMM... okay so I am blessed enough to live in Chicago and my perfect dog on any given day is a Nana's - warmed bun, Vienna Dog, mustard, relish, celery salt, fries on top - DONE. Now, I am allergic to onions before anyone goes all Chicago nuts on me.

I am with your husband every once in a while - Chili is WONDERFUL on a dog add mustard and cheese and I am a happy girl too, but my #1 is the afore mentiond dog!

*Katsup does not belong on a dog - do not order it that way here!

Brazilian hot dogs for me! My (of course) gorgeous Brazilian friend showed me how - it's maybe morphed a bit over the years.

Hot dog in bun, then add chopped raw onion, chilli salsa, corn, then smother the whole lot in mashed potato, then sprinkle with crushed potato chips. Yum.

Mine would be black from the grill in a bun with lots of mustard and relish. Preferably dill relish but sweet will do if I don't have it.

I love my dogs all kinds of ways, depending on what my mood is. We prefer Nathan's or Hebrew National. We actually set up a "bar" of all kinds of condiments most of the time, so people can do whatever their little hearts desire. The buns need to be warm, Jeremy even wants them toasted in the broiler for a few minutes, though I like mine warm but still soft, so we have to keep an eye on them while they're cooking. Sometimes it's a grilled onion, spicy brown mustard, saurkraut kind of day, other times it's just Plain Jane with a line of yellow mustard, some ketchup (MUST be Heinz), sharp cheddar, some relish and chopped raw onion, other times we'll do a little mustard relish, celery salt, and peppers. My FAVORITE though? After I make my special, delicious homemade chili and we don't have enough for everyone to have another bowl, we will have hotdogs on the grill or over a campfire. Darkened from the fire, topped with my homemade chili, and sharp cheddar cheese. Onions if you feel like it. That last one: PERFECTION. :)

I grew up in Chicago, and in the 70's one of our favorite restaurants was a Chicago hot dog place. Being a kid, I alway wanted mine plain--I didn't go for all that Chicago stuff. But plain at this place was mustard spread on the bun, and then sprinkled with celery seeds. To this day I must have celery seeds and mustard on my hot dogs. I now like all the Chicago fixings, but still, a hot dog isn't a hot dog without mustard and celery seeds only. I usually bypass everything else -- the memories that the taste of the celery seeds bring back are too precious.

I am with you... except for the mayo. Mayo goes on burgers, not hotdogs.
And I prefer either Nathan's or Hebrew National. I don't really enjoy any of the other brands.
And please, do NOT boil a hotdog! Eww.. microwaving it is better than boiled. But the best is right off the grill (split before grilling) with a slightly crispy on the inside bun.

When I was a little girl, it was hot dog with mustard. I didn't like anything else on my hot dog. When I was older, chili worked and I liked that with the mustard. I finally tried slaw and relish. Now I like all of them together.

Still don't like ketchup, onions or heaven forbid, sour kraut on a hot dog. I don't see that changing anytime soon!
