Tooth Sealant for 8 Year Old

I took my kids to the Dentist last week and they told I should have my 8 year old's son's teeth put a sealant on them. She gave me a brochure which says it's a plastic resin applied to the surface of the teeth. Just seeing if anyone out there has done this before. Anything you can tell me about it. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great responses. He still has a few baby teeth left. I'll probably call the dentist soon to schedule something.

Yes, all of my children do. To me it was much easier then having to worry about cavities. My kids do brush morning and night, but all have deep pockets in their back teeth which helps lead to cavities pretty quickly. I highly recommend the sealant.

There are arguments against it, but we just had DD's done a coule of months ago (she's almost 7) to keep the "no cavity" pattern going. Let's be honest, kids sometimes half @ss it and I will do whatever I can to help protect her teeth.

Of course we did it.... Why would you not?

Our daughter is 18 with ZERO cavities. The sealants can't promise that you'll never have a cavity (especially in between the teeth) but they go a LONG way in protecting the tooth. Of course the sealants are just a part of the job... it takes good dental hygiene daily to maintain good teeth.

It was covered 100% by insurance when we did it years ago. Very worth it in my opinion.

Of course! My son is 10--never had a cavity.
Coincidence? No clue. But I wouldn't refuse it.

Yes, do it! My son has them because he has very deep grooves in his molars that can make it harder for him to keep his teeth completely clean. He is almost twelve and has no cavities. Of course, they won't keep you from getting cavities without brushing an flossing very well daily.

DO IT! They did my sons baby teeth when he was 4, and will do his adult teeth if need be when he is older. Some people's teeth simply don't form well and have deep groves that are hard to clean. Back when I was a kid they did not to preventative sealing, you had to wait until you had a cavity and then they would put in a filling. Now that they do this preventatively you don't have to wait for decay and larger problems! I have fillings in almost all my teeth, but my kids, who inherited the same issues, have zero cavities thanks to early sealing.

yep.
Well worth it.
Particularly if your kid has deep crevices in their molars. It protects the actual surface of the tooth (even deep down in those crevices) from cavities, by preventing anything from actually being on the tooth surface (except the sealant itself)... so when your child doesn't do a thorough job cleaning those deep crevices every.single.time.they.brush---or even when they forget to brush---come on... they're kids now.... no sugars are left there to encourage bacterial growth and then cavities.

A word of caution though: don't let your kid eat/chew ice after the sealant is applied (a common, but bad, habit). It will cause the sealant to break and come off.

Typically it's for the adult molars that need protecting. Yes, our daughter has had sealants, albeit rather reluctantly on my part because the sealants contain BPA.

MY kids have all had it done. And they have had them reapplied when they were found missing. I guess they can wear off or fall off. I never had sealants and my back teeth are horrible. I want to prevent my kids from having the problems I have if possible.

I definitely recommend it. My son will need it eventually, but not quite yet (he's almost six). I know that I have them and they are very helpful in preventing cavities. They are usually recommended if your teeth have deeper grooves.

25 years ago, my daughter had sealant applied to her teeth. She was around that age. It does protect the teeth from cavities. She had no cavities as a kid. I wonder why adults can't have it done.

I had sealant put on both my daughters and son's baby teeth because they are so cavity prone with deep ridges on their molars (just like mom). It is a simple procedure where the add the compound to the top of the teeth and then use a UV light to cure it. Insurance wouldn't pay for it on the baby teeth but I see $50 as much cheaper than a cavity which is a couple hundred. As soon as they get the adult teeth in back I'll have it repeated again.

Your son will have all four of his adult (6 year) molars done at this point. Just 4 teeth. the sealant is a plastic type of material which will flow into the grooves and coat the teeth. It is awesome! I am a dental hygienist - and we do them all the time. We "etch" the tooth first with an acid to roughen up the enamel, which allows the sealant to bond to the tooth, then we cure it with a light. I have sealants put on now - first time for me, when I was 38 lol, so I'm looking forward to no cavities for me! You can have them put on your teeth too!

Sealants are a wonderful thing. I never had a cavity throughout my childhood because of them. Now that the sealants are wearing off, I've had two (at age 30) and am actually scheduled to get sealants again in May.

If your son isn't cavity prone, I wouldn't seal the baby teeth (unless insurance covers it). But definitely get sealants on when those big teeth come in.

Both my kids had sealants (now 24 and 15) and not one cavity. I think sealants saved their teeth! It's quick and easy and a great thing to do if you want to avoid cavities.

I am pretty sure my kids have it done when they go. Or it might be something else, but yes, sealant's are good for teeth. It helps protect them from cavities, to my knowledge.
