What's in Your Travel First Aid Kit?

Hi Mamas! We are getting ready to go on a family trip before baby 2 arrives. We have a 20 month old son who is becoming more adventurous by the day. :) Thankfully he's only had a few bumps and bruises and scrapes that we've been able to care for at home. That being said, I'm packing over the next few days and I'd like to get a first aid kit together, for things like stings, bites, scrapes, cuts, burns, whatever we need to be prepared, I suppose. Do you have a first aid kit? What's are the essentials? Thanks everyone!

Can Long Term Children’s Claritin Cause Diarrhea/belly Ache?

Hello everyone! My 3YO has been taking Claritin for a little over a month (Children’s oral Claritin) for his eczema. Two weeks ago he had really loose diarrhea stools. After that incident, He didnt poop several times a day, just every other morning with somewhat looser than normal stools. Other than that, no fever, not losing weight, and he’s very hydrated. He’s also very active and acting like his normal self. He doesn’t poop right after eating either. Just when he poops it is either super mushy or almost undigested (little food...

Not Breathing Scare -- Teeth-Brushing -- Input???

I just had a scare with my 2-1/2-year-old daughter. I was trying to brush her teeth. And as the dentist told me to do, I was having to hold her down on the floor, gently, with my legs holding her arms down. (It is awful, but at 2- 1/2 she still won't cooperate and doesn't brush her teeth well if at all.)She was screaming as always, wiggling, trying to get away and then she wasnt breathing and started turning blue! Immediately I held her up, blew in her face trying to get her to gasp for air and then let her go because she was trying...

What Controversial Parenting Decision Are You Glad You Stuck To?

I waited until my baby was six months to introduce cereal and baby foods. Daughter had allergies and eczema so bad as a baby we knew she was at risk for all allergies. My inlaws told people they were afraid we were starving the baby. Anyone could tell she was well fed and not hungry. We got a water softener, avoided foods known to trigger allergies, used only a few drops of soap, and used Cetaphil only. We removed all drapes and unnecessary beddding. We put tile down. Now she only has a few days of itchy eyes in the spring and...

Treatment for Mosquito Bites?

My 2-yr-old daughter gets the worst mosquito bites! Most of her bites turn into welts larger than a quarter and they're terribly itchy. If she gets a few bites, she typically cannot sleep for three or four nights straight. We try to keep her covered when she's outside and we use, against my better judgment, bug spray with a low percentage of Deet most of the time. But, with kids in and out all day, it's hard to always be on top of this and she does get bitten every now and then. Do you have any treatment ideas? I've tried benadryl...

Could I Be Allergic to My Dog?

Please help me ladies! I have battled hives on and off. Last spring was the first episode and I think it was caused by stress. I took Zyrtec and although it basically knocked my out (I was so sleepy and groggy for 24 hours), it took care of the hives. On occasion since then, I have taken it when the itching is unbearable, but the sleepiness really is an inconvenient side effect. Lately, I have had hives on a daily basis (I use dye free soaps and detergents). My legs look horrible due to the itching/scratching. I have started to...

Do You Take a Lot of Prescriptions?

I am just curious about this. My sister was over at my house the other day and opened my medicine cabinent and she yelled "Good Heavens! What is all of this?" She was freaking out because I take 5 prescriptions on a regular basis (for things like acid reflux, allergies, etc.) and vitamins on top of that. She was floored about it. I am 29 and I never really gave much thought to it. But she is 28 and thinks I am taking a ridiculous amount of meds & vitamins. So, just to satisfy my curiosity I want to see if I am in the norm or not. So - How...

Claritin and Other Allergy Meds

My son often gets runny nose/cough symptoms and my pediatrician has recommended that I try putting him on Claritin to manage those symptoms. I am reluctant to put him on medicine for prolonged periods of time. Dose anyone have information about any potential harmful effects of long-term use of allergy medicines in toddlers? Also, any suggestions of natural remedies that have worked would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How Long for Claritin to Take Effect?

Hi - We gave our son a 24 hour dose of Children's Claritin for allergies. We haven't seen any change. How long does it take to have effect? I know that Benadryl is fast acting. How long before I can give him a different allergy med if it doesn't help? I'll talk to his dr in the morning, but wanted to hear personal experiences. Thank you!

His pediatrician prescribed QVar and Albuterol - 2 inhaled medicines -and she said he'll need to do QVar for the rest of the winter. Are there any alternative approaches to colds and wheezing? I don't like giving him chemicals repeatedly. I don't like seeing him sick and feeling crummy. I want to do right by my son.

I Keep Getting Respiratory Infections and Can't Get Rid of My Cough

I am asking this because I am worried I have something more serious, but don't have insurance, and already went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago. At the beginning of December I was sick for two weeks, then I got sick again at the end of January. Both times I had a horrible cough that would keep me up at night, and just felt bad the whole time. Went to the doctor the second time I was sick, he said I had two resipratory infections (about a month apart) and he gave me 10 day antibiotics, but I don't think they did anything (I got...

Notice Any Conjection with Claritin and Ezcema?

Hello Moms My 2 yr old little girl is extremely allergic to mosquito bites. She suffers from huge blistering whelps when bitten and the pigment of her skin takes months to return to normal. I give her 1 teaspoon a day of Loratadine (generic for Claritin)during the summer months. This helps tremendously if she gets a bite. She also has eczema in the creases of her arms and legs. I treat that with Aveno and it works pretty well. There have been times that for some reason or another, that I did not give her Loratadine for maybe a week or...

Claritin Side Effects with Toddlers

Has anyone given claritin to a toddler and experience behavioral side-effects? My 2.5 year old has been taking Claritin for a little over a week and has been acting up much more than usual (e.g., throwing things and hitting). I realize that some of his behaviors are typical 2 year old behaviors, but his behavior definitely seems to have changed since starting the allergy medicine.

Allergy Testing for 15 Month Old

My 15 month old son has allergies. Nothing severe. He has had some eczema in the past but that has been under control for months now. We use vanicream once per day and that is it. Really nothing to speak of. He lay on the cats once and turned red and itchy so I am assuming he may have a cat allergy but of course nothing notable since and he is around the cats all the time. He had the RAST blood test done at 1 year and he tested a 1 for wheat and milk and a 2 for eggs and peanuts. He drinks goats milk and has recently been introduced to cows...

Toddler Says He Has "Bugs in Eyes"???

My son has been rubbing his eyes and saying "eyes" then "bugs". He points to his eyes and very seriously says "bugs, bugs". He is 23 months old, so his vocabulary isn't such that he can explain anything. We do have an animal book, and he knows what bugs are. In the bathtub he will pour water in his eyes, rub them then say "bugs". Sometimes he rubs his eyes so hard that they are very red. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions as to what this may be? He doesn't do this everyday, but he has been doing it on and off since the...
