Number of Ultrasounds

We are pregnant with our second child. We are only 13 weeks along and just went to our 2nd doc apt. With our first child we were living in California and switched docs a few times so we had more ultrasounds than "normal". When I asked my current doc when we would be getting an ultrasound she said not until 20 weeks. Is this typical? I had always thought that you had at least one ultrasound prior to week 20. There is nothing to indicate that anything is wrong I was just wondering what was "normal" procedure.

What can I do next?

Yes, it's typical. Most insurance companies won't cover more than one ultrasound unless medically necessary. Some doctors will have you have an ultrasound earlier if you've had a history of miscarriage, problematic pregnancies, multiples, or are unsure of the approximate conception date or if there are any cause for concerns with the current pregnancy. Otherwise, one at 20 weeks is the standard procedure.

It depends on your doctor and your previous pregnancies. With my first son I had probably 2-3 u/s. One to determine dates, one mid-way (20 weeker), and perhaps another one.
My second pregnancy I had 3 u/s but that was because of problems that ended in miscarriage and a D&C at 11 weeks.
My third and current pregnancy I have had SEVERAL u/s due to placenta previa and other concerns.
My Dr is also great about giving the mom piece of mind. If I feel the need for an u/s he is very understanding. If he feels it isn't warranted he will ask if a doppler HB check is sufficient. If I don't feel like it is he is fine with proceeding with an u/s.

It isn't abnormal to only have one u/s in a pregnancy but you should be able to request more if you feel like you want/need them. You can also go to an u/s place (ie: Fetal Foto, etc) but they can be pricey and you need to know that the people doing the u/s are NOT REGISTERED U/S TECHS.

Blessings on your Pregnancy!!

Yes, ma'am. I've been in the SL valley for all 3 kids and one ultrasound is all you get! Unless there is a medical reason (pain, bleeding...), the insurance won't pay for more.

Yeah, sadly but true. If you want more ultrasounds you have to go to Fetal Fotos(on state street in murray), Fetal Studio(in south towne mall), Gender Ultrasound(in provo mall), or some other company that does ultrasounds. I went to gender ultrasounds in the Provo mall because they had a pretty good package. And I got like 2 extra ultrasound because they couldn't tell if it was a boy or girl the first few times. They give you 2D pictures, 3D pictures, and even a video with music. It's pretty cool. If I were you and wanted more ultrasounds, I would shop around for the best prices and packages.
